Interview with Nichola Moffat

Are you a mom (or parent)?

I’m not and don’t intend to be for a few years yet! I’m only twenty, give me a bit of time. I would like to be a mother some day though.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

I guess the common theme in all my work is that you have to take chances in life no matter the risk. We can’t be afraid of the consequences or we’ll never move forward, we’ll just sit in our little bubble, too afraid of the world to go and experience it.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

I suppose the obvious answer is Harry Potter! It’s not exactly romance but it’s fantastic. If I had to choose something closer to a romance though (and I know I’m not quite there!) I’d say The Hunger Games. Both series have stayed with me and kept me thinking long after I’ve turned the last page. That’s the mark of a good book.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Now that’s a tough one! I’d say Leon Peyton from Solace. He’s such a kind soul, and the way he loves Isabella is how every woman should be loved. He’s also very easy to write, his story is just there in front of me yearning to be told. The book is over but with Leon there is so much more to say. If I had to just write about him forever, I don’t think it would be boring.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

My next novel will be called Past Sundown, set a few years in the future after the greatest war mankind has ever seen. With the most of the men having been killed in battle, it’s a woman’s world now… I won’t spoil any more but let’s just say these women have an interesting way of doing things.

What book are you reading now?

I’m currently reading the Hobbit in preparation for the film coming out later this year.

What is in your to read pile?

Well, I guess it makes sense to go from The Hobbit to the Lord of the Rings. After that I quite fancy reading The Railway Man.

The Immortal (Re)Cycle Guest blog with Kristi Jones

The Immortal (Re)Cycle

When I was invited to visit Wenona’s wonderful blog, my first thought was obviously about being ‘green’ and recycling. I’m a faithful recycler and it occurred to me that my main character, Meg Highbury, is really on something of a recycling nightmare.

In my new novel, The Corpse Goddess, Meg discovers she’s a Valkyrie and that the first duty of a Valkyrie is to trade places with a corpse and walk with the dead for a decade or so.

Now I don’t consider myself a horror writer, but Meg is dealing with the decay of her own body and the ‘life cycle’ of an immortal. Needless to say, it’s not pretty.

In Meg’s new world, Valkyries live forever but they are still subject to the very mortal body in which they reside. She cannot die, but she watches her fingers turn blue and feels her stomach gasses building.

Understandably, Meg goes on a panicked mission to reverse the process and stop the onset of the Death Duty.

Wouldn’t you do just about anything in the world to avoid rotting alive?

Most people envision a Valkyrie as a buxom blonde clad in gleaming armor, perhaps on horseback with her hair flowing in the wind. But while Meg’s mother encapsulates this image of the golden goddess, of a beautiful Valkyrie built for the battlefield, Meg is just an average college student. If Meg can find a way around the Death Duty, she can live a single human lifetime as a young woman. She can side-step the horrible Death Duty and postpone her duties as a lower goddess. But to avoid this natural recycling of mortal flesh, she has to find a loophole. Still, if the ancient gods of Valhalla have a loophole, what price will she have to pay?

How far would you go to escape a living death?

The Corpse Goddess is a book about the pain of the life cycle, of the horrifying prospect of recycling the body we’re born with.  If you’re not too squeamish and enjoy a healthy dose of the supernatural, you might have a little fun, laugh out loud and squirm just a bit while Meg Highbury does her damndest to get back to the land of the living.

What’s more, her first duty is to trade places with the corpse.  But Meg is being sent to her Death Duty too soon. In a race against time, Meg frantically tries to find a loophole to her gruesome fate, but while Meg is determined to live whatever the cost, Armando's strict moral principles keep getting in the way of her plans for escape.

Can Meg walk the 'right' and narrow path, possibly sacrificing her mortal life, for love? And if she can, will Armando have the stomach to love a rotting corpse of a girl who is falling apart in more ways than one?

Forming Green Realms Guest blog with Kinley Baker

Forming Green Realms

Thank you so much for allowing me to visit today, Wenona! I appreciate your support of the Denied Blog Tour. I’m especially happy to be at this blog because the fantasy realms I build are completely green friendly. The Shadowed Love Series is based on Shadow Shifters who travel from the Mortal realm to the Realm of Shadows in the year 657. Fast forward to modern day times and Book One (RUINED) takes place in a kingdom that has known peace for centuries. If you’d like to read how the Shadow Shifters traveled to the Realm of Shadows, you can read it in FREED: A Shadowed Love Story, which is a prequel novella and available at Amazon for 99 cents.

The first book in the series is RUINED, and it’s the story of newly crowned King Vale, a man who falls for his forbidden Senior Healer. Their kingdom is in modern times, but they weren’t exposed to the technology we have today, so their society is very much medieval and the few conveniences they have run on magic from The Well of Souls, the heart and power source of their people. Technology can overwhelm me sometimes, so I liked the idea of creating a realm where readers can leave cell phones at the door.

DENIED is the story of Tabitha, a woman who wants to be the first accepted female guard in her kingdom. And Caleb, a man from another homeland, who is trying to provide a safe future for his men. His people lost their women and children in a brutal invasion two years before the story starts. Tabitha only wants to fight, and Caleb only wants to protect her. It’s a battle of wits and blades.

I also have a new series coming out in 2013. It’s a post-apocalyptic/futuristic romance set in a realm that thrives on solar power. I guess I know how I feel about things, considering I’m developing a pattern. I love your blog and good luck with The Everything Green Wedding Book. I could have used that when I got married several years back.

I hope you’ll take a chance on the realm. I recommend the 99 cent novella to see if the Shadowed Love Series would be a good fit.

DENIED BLURB
SHADOWED LOVE, BOOK TWO

When invaders brutally massacred the women and children of the Varner, Caleb witnessed loss and destruction on a scale few can comprehend. As the leader of a race on the brink of extinction, his only hope for survival is gaining acceptance into the Shadow Shifter Kingdom. Struggling with new customs, he meets Tabitha, a woman who challenges his limits.

Refused the right to join the king’s guard because of her gender, Tabitha must be stronger than the men to prove she deserves to be the first accepted female Warrior in the kingdom. She believes Caleb will help improve her abilities, until she learns her goals conflict with the foundation of his culture.

When the realm is attacked, Tabitha and Caleb must come together not only to fight, but to find the strength to win against an evil with the potential to destroy everything they revere most--including each other.
