Interview and Giveaway with ML Ryan

Welcome, ML Ryan. ML please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

Thanks for having me!  I’ve been writing urban fantasy/paranormal romance/science fiction for a little over a year.  But as an Immunologist, I’ve been writing science non-fiction for a long time. This is definitely much more fun.  I’ve always made up stories in my head, and I finally decided to start writing some of them down.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

I’ve written two novels in the Coursodon Dimension Series.  The first — Special Offers — is about a woman who is inhabited by an arrogant, womanizing humanoid from another dimension who was previously trapped inside her Kindle eBook reader.  The second in the series — Special Rewards — follows her as she travels to the parallel dimension and learns to deal with the after effects of sharing her body with a magical being.

Are you a mom (or parent)? If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

I am a mom.  My son is now almost 17, so I don’t find it difficult to balance those roles, I find it difficult to live with a teenager with raging hormones. I will say, however, that raising a son has given me huge insights into the inner workings of the male mind.  If I’d known all this stuff when I was dating, life would have been so much easier.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

It’s interesting that you asked that question, because readers who know me seem to have a hard time differentiating M.L. Ryan from the main character, Hailey.  There are some things that are alike; we both have out of control hair and a scientific background.  We also share a love of tequila and sarcasm. But really, that’s where all similarity ends.  Hailey milks chinchilla for artisanal cheese while I have milked rats for nutritional research.  Completely different.  Oh, and I have never been possessed by some supernatural dude who I released from my Kindle.  Seriously though, I think there’s a little bit of me in almost all my characters.  Except for Hailey’s mother, who is a sort of warped combination of a bunch of mom’s I know.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

Well, if they aren’t already surprised by the whole rodent milking thing, I’m not sure what to say.  People tend to think someone with a Ph.D. is dull and humorless.  And usually, they would be correct.  But there are some of us that are closeted comics.  To be honest, I don’t keep my sense of humor too under wraps - I can find something funny in almost every situation and it is very, very difficult for me to hold my tongue even I know I should.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

I love Sebastian (the guy from the Kindle).  He’s kind of a jerk, but somehow he grows on you.  He likes to bait Hailey, and he doesn’t make sharing her body easy, but all-in-all, he has her best interests at heart.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

I’m working on the third book in the Coursodon Dimension Series, which I hope to have out by summer. Let’s just say Hailey, Sebastian and Alex, her other-worldly lover, have more inter-dimensional problems to deal with.  Things are never boring when magical beings from another dimension are involved.

This was fun!  Thanks for having me.

ISBN: 978-0615672762

Number of pages: 216
Word Count: 63,000

Book Description:

As soon as Hailey Parrish discovered her husband was cheating with her co-worker, she swore off men. She had to find another job when her boss went to prison for being a pimp in his spare time. Three years later, Hailey still hadn’t gone on a date and she milks chinchilla for a living. Her life is about to get weirder.

While in pursuit of inter-dimensional miscreants who use their arcane powers to prey upon humans, Sebastian Kess was ambushed and mortally wounded. To save his life, he used his own magic to convert his soul to binary code and transfer it into Hailey’s soon-to-be shipped Kindle eBook reader. When Hailey inadvertently releases him and he inhabits her body, she finally has a man inside her, just not in the way she imagined.

Hailey must come to grips with the existence of the parallel dimension of Coursodon and the realization that magically inclined non-humans walk the world while dealing with Sebastian’s arrogant banter in her head.  Her predicament also introduces her to another supernatural, the handsome could-be-the-man-of-her-dreams Alex Sunderland.  The action moves from Hailey’s hometown of Tucson, Arizona to New England and across Europe as she and Alex try to return Sebastian to his own body while staying one step ahead of the criminals who want to keep him where he is.

Special Offers, the first book of the Coursodon Dimension Series, combines paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a bit of science fiction and a healthy dose of quirky humor.

About the Author:

M.L. Ryan is a professional woman — not that she gave up her amateur status, but rather that she is over-educated with a job in which she spends a lot of time writing dry science non-Fiction. In an effort to strengthen the less logical side of her brain, she decided to write some of the many stories rolling around in her head.  She lives in Tucson, AZ with her husband, son, four cats, two dogs and two adopted desert tortoises.
