Interview with Husband and Wife Writing Duo HR Jackson

Please share a little bit about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

Where to start? Well, we’re a husband/wife collaborative team, married for over a decade, and currently residing in Seattle after we’d finally had our fill of South Texas heat. We’ve both been writing independently for years, but most of the work is unpublished, so no other pen names at present. We don’t have any kids yet, not for lack of trying, but we are owned by four cats and one fish. Our preferred genres include Urban Fantasy, Mythology, Action/Adventure, and Romance.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Well, our current release, Hand of Time, is book 2 of The Nemesis Chronicles series. Book one, Minutes to Midnight, came out last year and has been pretty successful so far. This novel is the continuation of the saga of Dirk, the Viking, and Morgan, the Amazon in an alternative version of modern day Vegas. We expanded out the world a bit more from the first book, giving readers a chance to see the world of the NC through different venues. We explore more of the relationship between our two protagonists (the story is told in first POV, alternating by chapter between Dirk and Morgan), as well as their relationships with the Nemesis group.

We get a little deeper into the threats that face not only our main characters, but also the world of Mythics at large, especially in terms of Society involvement. Mythics are beings of legend and myth, possessing powerful abilities, who have an uneasy truce with the humans of the NC world, living among them, mostly hiding their true selves to keep the peace. The Society For The Betterment of Humanity is a group of scientists and zealots who feel the Mythics are abominations who must either be brought to heel or eradicated entirely.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?
Absolutely. I think, as a writer, it’s kind of hard not to. Some of the scenes are based off scenes we’ve run in RPG games. And a few of the characters, three at least, are based directly off people we know or knew. The relationship is closely based on our own relationship because it wasn’t exactly a smooth ride from the word go. Some of the conversations are based off of conversations we’ve actually had and both of the main characters share facets of our own personalities.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

Have an open mind and think for yourself. Don’t let stereotypes determine who you are. Don’t let labels define you. You blaze your own path through this world.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

Mainly it boils down to video games, comics, reading, and cooking. We like to explore the city, taking in the sights and finding new destinations. We’d love to travel more, both of us having spent time outside of the US, but lately, any vacation we take is to visit our families. We’re both cinephiles, but we also really enjoy going to live performances of ballet and concerts and such.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

We don’t have a title for book 3 yet, although we’ve been brainstorming a few ideas. But it will be more of a blending of the first two books, because by that point, everyone should be on the same page about where the characters are headed and what they’re up to, so lots of action, lots of introspection, and a lot of the questions that have cropped up from the first two books will be answered. It’ll expand the world significantly, showing off different planes and cities that have thus far only been mentioned in passing. Relationships between the characters will all be tested and deepened, and new characters brought into the mix that will be the source of those tests. It also wraps up this cycle of the overall arc, leading into the next trilogy cycle. Very exciting stuff!

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

Aside from the third book, there’s only one other project in the works and it’s about halfway done. It takes place outside of the world we’ve built for the Nemesis Chronicles and it’s closer to modern day, but it has the added intrigue of heroes and villains who are more reminiscent of what you find in comics. No slated release date for that one, but we’re hoping sometime before next year.

About the Author:

Once upon a time, a man and a woman looked at each other and asked, “Why aren’t we writing this down?”

Inspired by Sci-Fi and Fantasy, with a healthy appreciation of all manner of geekery, they longed to create a world where sword, sorcery, and a little sprinkling of real life could come together. With this in mind, the pair sat down and started the stories that would eventually become The Nemesis Chronicles.

When they aren’t weaving fantastical tales, they spend their time being owned by the Feline Mafia and watching the rain fall in their home city of Seattle.
