The book that never was-The Green Sex Guide: Make Your Love Life Natural, Eco-Friendly, and Sustainable

In the height of the green revolution I published The Everything Green Wedding Book.

I also wrote up several book proposals for other green books that never made it.

Here's one of the proposals- some parts have been left out but this is the majority of the proposal.

A Non-Fiction Book Proposal for
The Green Sex Guide: Make Your Love Life Natural, Eco-Friendly, and Sustainable

By Wenona Napolitano

Introduction

Overview

Green is the hottest trend right now. So much so that popular trend watching companies have devoted entire reports on how to green your brand. Everything and everyone seems to be going green.

“Green” is a hot buzzword right now. You can’t open a magazine or newspaper without being hit with some kind of green article or how-to green guide. Turn on the TV and you are assaulted by shows that help you learn about going green, even a whole green television network popped up, PlanetGreen. The green industry is growing at such a rapid rate that even huge corporations are going green to keep up with the times.

According to a report by Reuters “Four out of five people say they are still buying green products and services today--which sometimes cost more--even in the midst of a US recession.” Trendwatching.com believes the quest for green will continue for quite awhile- at full force.

The saying has always been that sex sells, now more than ever it is green that sells. Combine the two and you may have a goldmine.

To combine the elements of the green trend and the ever popular topic of sex I would like to propose to you The Green Sex Guide.

You can green your food, your shopping, your transportation choices and more, but did you know you can green your sex life?

That’s right you can have an eco-friendly sex life. From the romance to the intercourse you can turn your love life into an orgasmically green experience.

In The Green Sex Guide you’ll learn: about the importance of going green, why you should green your sex life, how to transform your bedroom into an eco-luxurious love nest, and how to create an ambiance for green romance. You’ll also find out how to adorn yourself in eco-sexy lingerie and where to buy it, you’ll even learn how to green your sexual toy box. If you don’t have someone special, you can find out how to locate the love of your life, in the perfect shade of green.

Book Structure

I envision The Green Sex Guide as a quality paperback printed on recycled paper along the lines of The Green Book, Eco Chic, or The Lazy Environmentalist only with a much sexier cover. I see the cover being very interesting, a standout cover that makes green look really sexy.

The Green Sex Guide will consist of at least 13 chapters that cover many aspects of greening your sex life and your sexual world: from revamping your bedroom ecostyle to going on a romantically green vacation and everything in between including sustainably sexy lingerie, eco-erotic sex toys, and orgasmically green lubricants and love oils.

In the chapters I would like to include sexy sidebars full of facts and stats: Green Speak (Definitions) – These side bars will offer definitions and explanations for terms found throughout the text in the book as well as interesting green tidbits of information; Greengasms (Tips-Alternate Tip Title- Orgasmically Green) - These hot tips will arouse your interest in greening your sex life and add a little sizzle to sustainability; Sex Stats and Facts- These interesting facts and stats about sex are sure to make you stand up and take notice; and Too Naughty! (Warnings)-Avoid these mistakes and downfalls when it comes to going green.

In addition to 13+ chapters on eco-sexual topics I will also include two appendices: one for web resources and one with recommended green reading.

The book will be written in a light hearted and fun voice while still conveying the importance of making the most natural part of your life truly natural…and green.

The book will be packed with not just stats, facts and green information but also why and how to put it to good use along with the places where you can get more information or purchase supplies. It will also include quotes from experts to lend credibility to the whole book.

 Audience and Market

Everyone’s doing it…going green that is. And everyone has sex (and if they aren’t they want to be). Green is hot and sex sells. Sexual self help books often sell very well and are an evergreen topic because sex never goes out of style.

In 2005 $693 million worth of self-improvement books were sold.

Combining sex and the ever growing market of green topics and you have a book that will appeal to a wide range of people from bored housewives who want to improve their sex lives to young people who want to live healthy and green…in every aspect of their life.

Competitive Books

There are many, many books about sex and a number of new books about green topics are popping up every day but so far there is only one comparable book with the topic of green sex. That book is published by Ten Speed Press- EcoSex: Go Green Between the Sheets and Make Your Love Life Sustainable by Stephanie Iris Weiss. It was recently released in April 2010.

The Green Sex Guide
By Wenona Napolitano

Introduction
The most natural and intimate part of your life...sex...probably isn't very natural…not if you're using conventional lubricants, oils or sex toys or wearing pesticide laden clothing.

Conventional lubricants often contain harmful ingredients-many derived from petroleum based products. Propylene glycol is used in car batteries, brake fluid, antifreeze and industrial solvents...and in some personal lubricants. What? Really? Why would the same petroleum based product used in the automotive industry be used in something that gets put not just on...but in your most intimate areas? It is crazy and unhealthy.

And that's not all that finds its way into lotions, oils and lubes. Parabens, which are known endocrine disruptors and have been linked to several types of cancer, appear in many personal care products including massage oils and personal lubricants.

Then there’s the everyday exposure to toxins from everything in our world: cleaning products to food, to the clothes we wear and bedding we sleep on.

The good news is that there are eco-alternatives. You can be intimately green without giving up a diverse and stimulating sex life.

That’s right you can have an awesome and eco-friendly sex life.
Chapter 1: The Importance of Going Green

It is about time a popular trend is about something good and not just fashionable. Going green not only helps save the planet but it can help you live a healthier life. There are so many ways to go green, so many ways you can be eco-friendly and most of them are pretty easy- drive less, shop less, carry reusable bags to the store, and ditch your plastic bottled water habit.

You may already know about greening other common aspects of your life- like recycling and buying local and organic products but now it’s time to get into the intimate areas and make those eco-friendly as well. From the romance to the intercourse you can turn your love life into an orgasmically green experience.

Don’t worry it won’t be painful at all. In fact in it will probably be a very stimulating experience, but where do you start?

Why Green Your Sex Life
You are probably wondering what green has to do with your sex life but in fact your health and well being is directly tied to your sex life. Pollution and toxins can affect the circulatory and hormone systems in both men and women -- which in turn can wreak havoc on the libido. Plain and simple- If you are not healthy your sex life will suffer. Living a more natural, sustainable and green lifestyle can greatly improve all aspects of your life, including the intimate areas.

Everyday Green
Green your life in simple and easy ways from staring to recycle to incorporating organic foods and products into your life. It’s easier than you may think.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
One of the biggest ways to be green is by reducing your carbon footprint and being a conscious consumer. This means reducing the amount of resources you use, reusing everything you can before throwing it away, sending it to the recycling bin or buying something new, and last but not least recycle everything possible from scrap paper to batteries.

Changing Your Ways
Becoming green is a lifestyle change but don’t think you have to go without or live on granola. Once you get the hang of being green you’ll find that your life is simpler and much more satisfying.

Chapter 2: Look Good Green

Dress the Part
The quickest way to look like a greenie is by dressing the part. Forget about toxic pesticide laden clothes and opt for greener duds. Don’t worry with stores like Wal-Mart offering organic options you don’t have to spend a fortune either. And in case you didn’t know used clothing is very green. Trade, swap or hit the used clothing stores and opt for vintage goods to look stylishly green.

Organic Personal Care Products
What goes on your skin goes in your body. Lotions, shampoos, conditioners, cosmetics…all of your personal care products should be as natural as possible to avoid more exposure to toxic chemicals.

Organic and All Natural Cosmetics
Paint yourself beautiful with all natural, organic, and mineral cosmetics. Beauty doesn’t have to be cruel.

Kissable Green Lips
Make sure your lips are eco-kissable with all natural organic lip balms, lip glosses, and lip sticks.

Natural Hair Removal
Remove hair in private areas with natural waxes, organic shave creams and lotions.

Chapter 3: Dating the Green Way

No One Special? Try Eco-Dating
Are you lacking that special green someone. Don’t worry there are now dating sites devoted entirely to connecting green people. From finding another vegetarian to connecting with an aspiring environmentalist you can find that special someone in the perfect shade of green for you.

Where to Find Someone Green In the Real World
You can find like minded greenies at green events, Farmer’s Markets, organic stores and more.

Chapter 4: Set the Stage; Create an Eco-Luxurious Love Nest

You can give your boring and blah bedroom an eco-transformation to turn it into a safe and sexy green haven. Use green materials to create a stimulating ambience that is sure to arouse and please. Simple green bedroom makeovers can involve changing your sheets from regular cotton or polyester to organic cotton, hemp and/or bamboo blends; maybe even slap some VOC free paint on your walls to give it a shot of sexy color.

Indoor Air Quality
The air inside your home can be more polluted than the toxic air outside. By taking precautions and getting rid of toxic VOC emitters you can clean the air you breathe.

Natural Bedding
Sleep like a baby on all natural toxin free bedding. Organic cotton, natural bamboo, and luxurious hemp will create a sexy and healthy ambience in your eco-love nest.

VOC Free Paint
Ditch the toxic chemicals and give your boring bedroom a new coat of paint- ecostyle with VOC free earth friendly paints. No need to sacrifice style or color options either. With new lines of VOC free paints popping up from major retailers like Home Depot and Sherwin Williams you can find green style in any color your choose.

Eco-Flooring
Put your tootsies on down on eco-flooring. From recycled carpet to bamboo flooring you may be surprised at what is available to create an eco-sexy bedroom floor.

Mood Lighting: CFL’s and LED’s
Save energy, save the planet and have soft mood lighting with CFL and LED lighting.

Feng Shui for Romance
Following the fundamentals of feng shui is a great way to go green in some ways. Feng Shui wants you to get rid of clutter and unhealthy elements and use natural materials for furniture and décor. In many ways feng shui and green go hand in hand.

Chapter 5: Romance…the Green Way

Before you get down to the good green lovin’ you may want to set the stage for a little eco-romance.

Set the scene for romance, the eco-friendly way. Go natural and organic for the best green romance with safe, natural soy and beeswax candles, delicious organic chocolates, other yummy and tasty treats, organic wine and mood music MP3’s.

Natural Beeswax and Soy Candles
Start out with sustainable seduction by lighting natural soy, beeswax or vegetable wax candles. Regular candles are made from paraffin, a petroleum based product which emits soot and nasty VOCs that can damage your health. Some candle wicks also contain lead which can enter the air during burning. Choose eco-candle options like those from Illume or Scandle, to shed green mood lighting on your romantic interludes.

Organic Chocolates
Chocolate contains the same chemicals produced by the brain when we are in love (or lust). That makes chocolate a very sexy aphrodisiac and the darker the chocolate the better, also the more natural and pure the better- that means going organic.

Other Tasty Treats
Adding food and drinks to your sensually green evening? Local and organic goods are always a good choice

Organic and Biodynamic Wines and Beer
Did you know there are also organic wine, champagne, and beer options? Check your local stores to see what kind of organic alcohols may be available in your area. If your local stores don’t carry any organic spirits, there are many retailers online.

Download Your Mood Music, Skip the CD’s
If you are adding music to the atmosphere opt for playing your MP3 player instead of purchasing new CDs. Downloading music onto your MP3 player uses less resources therefore it is a greener option.

Chapter 6: Eco-Erotic Stimulation

Get your groove on the green way. Find your porn and other eco-erotic stimulation digitally to save on paper and resources without giving up your naughty little vices.

View or Download Your Porn Online, Ditch the DVD’s
Most of us have long surpassed the age of bulky VHS tapes but now even the DVD is going the way of the dinosaur, especially when it comes to porn. Many companies offer digital downloads for a fraction of the cost of a DVD. You can save money, be green and still get your stimulation, eco-erotically.

Porn for a Good Cause
There are several porn companies that donate partial proceeds to charities; a couple were created for that purpose alone, like F@##ing For the Planet.

Digital Magazine Subscriptions
Many magazines now offer digital subscription services, including Playboy and Penthouse. Go to Zinnio.com or check out other digital providers.

Erotic E-books
E-Books are big business. Even mainstream publishers are starting to offer their books in digital format. You can even grab an e-reader like the Kindle or Sony’s e-book reader to make it easier to read.

Online Erotica for Women
Many online erotica sites and e-book publishers are devoted to women’s erotica fiction from mild to wild women (and men, or couples) can find exactly what they want without leaving the house or buying a print book.

Chapter 7: Eco-Aphrodisiacs

Get your motor running the green way. Culinary delights, sensual aromatherapy, herbal sexual stimulants, and pheromones… Learn what works, what could possibly work and how to have fun trying them out.

Aromatherapy for Lovers
Aromatherapy has been practiced for centuries. Learn about the natural scents that can turn you and your lover on.

Good Sex Herbs
Herbal delights added to your food or taken as supplements can have a positive effect on your sex life.

Pheromones
Everyone has their own special chemistry and scent. Pheromones are part of what attracts us to each other. Some scientists have attempted to bottle the natural excretions and turn them into perfumes and colognes that can attract the opposite sex. What does this mean for you? Can pheromones give your sex life an edge…naturally.

Rev Up Your Libido…Naturally
What other ways are there to rev up your libido naturally? Keep reading for fun tips and tricks that can improve your sex life…naturally.

Chapter 8: Eco-Sexy Lingerie

You are dying to strut your stuff in sexy new lingerie, but how do you know if the naughty nightie you’ve been eying is eco-friendly?

Pesticide Free Privates
Roughly every pound of cotton needs 1/3 pound of pesticides to keep it bug free. Those pesticides get trapped in the cotton fibers and can leach into your skin, even after several washes.

It’s time to be pesticide free and oh so eco-sexy.

With over 85,000 synthetic chemicals registered for use in the United States no one is sure what harm combinations of chemicals and exposure rates can do to general health and fertility rates but many studies have concluded that fertility in animals and humans are being affected by something. So it is best to limit exposure to chemicals as much as possible.

You do have options when it comes to your panties and lingerie, you can slip into something sexy and sustainable. Organic cotton, organic and peace silks, bamboo and hemp are all sustainable fabrics being used to create gorgeous eco-lingerie.

Organic Cotton
If you are looking for something made in the USA, Urban Fox is an all American company creating sexy vintage inspired styles from bamboo and organic cotton. You can find them at UrbanFoxEco.com.

Bamboo and Hemp
Bamboo and hemp are highly sustainable fabrics because they grow fast with minimal water usage and no need for pesticides.

Peace Silk
Peace silk is a term used to describe silk that has been harvested without killing the silk worm. This is thought to be a more eco-friendly and humane option though it does prove to be a little more costly.

Other Sustainable Lingerie Fabrics
A few creative companies are experimenting with fabrics made from soy, milk, and other sustainable materials in addition to organic cotton, bamboo, hemp and silk to make amazing eco-sexy lingerie. Enamore, Eco-Boudoir and several other UK designers are creating beautifully green lingerie mostly from silk and you can’t get any greener than French company g=9.8’s line of sensually green lingerie made from pine needles and pine scraps. Wow.

And there’s always vintage lingerie- which is also a very green option. Want updated style with vintage appeal? Check out Brooklyn based Clare Bare who creates lingerie from vintage fabrics and organic materials.

Chapter 9: Play Green: Give Your Sexual Toy Box an Eco-Makeover

Now that you’ve set the stage for seduction and slipped into some eco-sexy lingerie, do you feel like playing? Make sure your toys aren’t toxic before sticking them into your intimate areas.

Sexual products are not regulated by any governmental agency because they are labeled as “novelty items” or “marital aids”. This means anything can be lurking in the products that you get very close and personal with.

The great thing is that there are now many eco-alternatives. It is time to give your sex toy box a green makeover.

The Dangers of PVC and Phthalates in Sex Toys
PVC and other plastics are often filled with phthalates- a nasty chemical used to soften the plastic and make it flexible. Phthalates have been shown to alter hormone levels, create damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system, and cause birth defects. In a study conducted by Greenpeace Netherlands 7 out of 8 sex toys contained some level of phthalates. Other studies conclude that phthalates can create fertility problems, especially in men through decreasing sperm count.

When shopping for sex toys be aware that currently there are no laws regarding ingredients, manufacturing practices, even mislabeling of products in the sex industry. Most toys are sold as novelties therefore do not have to follow any safety guidelines or standards.

Avoid novelty items, really cheap toys, “jelly” materials, and anything that emits a strong chemical odor. Those are sure signs the toy is made from phthalate filled plastic. For more about finding safe sex toys visit the Coalition Against Toxic Toys at www.badvibes.org

Glass , Granite and Ceramic Toys
High quality glass sex toys are very green. They are made with a natural resource that can easily be recycled. Just make sure you get high quality products that will not crack or break.

Wood Dildos
Nothing says natural like wood. Some wood dildos are hand carved with no two being alike. Others are made so artistically they appear as works of art.

Aluminum and Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is another natural, renewable resource that can easily be recycled when you are done with it.

Rechargeable Batteries and Vibrators
Get yourself some rechargeable batteries to place in your sex toys. Once they die all you have to do is recharge them no need to toss them in the garbage or go buy new ones.

You know it’s green when its solar powered and yes now even sex toys can run on the energy of the sun.

Where to Buy
Here are some trusted names in eco-sex toy shopping.

Recycle Your Old Sex Toys
Toss out your old sex toys (preferably you can recycle them through www.recycleyoursextoy.com) and look for new greener and healthier options like those made from high quality glass, 100% medical grade silicone, polished stone, surgical stainless steel, some wooden toys, hard plastics like acrylic, and softer toys made with elastomers.

Chapter 10: Organic Orgasms

Once you’ve found a good green toy you’ll probably need some lube to help you play with it.

Anything that goes in or on the body should be natural and free of harsh chemicals and toxins. Too bad most conventional sexual lubricants contain numerous chemicals, phthalates, or a string of words no one can pronounce. Many are petroleum based products like propylene glycol which is used in car batteries, brake fluid, antifreeze and solvents. Something that is used as a heavy duty industrial solvent probably shouldn’t be lubing up your private parts.

Parabens are another common ingredient in lotions, lubricants and many cosmetic products including personal lubricants. Parabens are a known endocrine disruptor which can create an overproduction of estrogen causing all kinds of problems in both women and men- including fertility issues. Parabens are also linked to breast cancer.

60% of what is applied on the skin is absorbed into the body. Mucus membranes such as the mouth, vagina or anus (all popular sexual orifices) are even more absorbent. These orifices can easily absorb toxins into your body and send them directly to your organs.

There are more green companies sprouting up everyday offering intimate organic solutions for your health and your pleasure. You can find these organic lubricants at online stores like EarthErotics.com, GoodCleanLove.com and LoveMeNaturally.com.

Toxins to Avoid
Learn which chemicals and additives are the most toxic and learn what to be on the lookout for by reading labels. Avoid parabens, phthalates, artificial colors, artificial fragrances (often labeled just as Fragrance) and be wary of anything with a long chemical sounding name you cannot pronounce.

Massage Oils
Rub each other down organically, it’ll be a very sustainably stimulating experience.

Lubricants
It’s time to ditch those bottles of toxins and reach for something more earth and body friendly. Good Clean Love offers 100% green love products including 95% organic, 99.9% vegan and cruelty free personal lubricants. Firefly Organics offers personal lubricants free of glycerin, petroleum and parabens with 100% all natural ingredients. Yes, the first and only USDA certified organic line of personal lubricants, offers personal intimacy with no petroleum, parabens, glycerin or other artificial ingredients.

Chapter 11: Good Health = Great Sex

What you eat, what you do, your general health…everything can affect your sex drive and performance. Living green is about living clean and natural and this can vastly improve every aspect of your life.

How Living Green Can Improve Your Love Life
Every aspect of your life can affect your health and therefore your sex life.

Eating Right
Eating right is a must. Learn about the best foods to eat for your health and the most important ones to substitute with organic options.

Spend Time Outside
Even if you live in the city it is important to get outside and find yourself in nature, even if it is just a block of grass in the middle of an urban jungle. Connect with nature to connect with your inner self.
Exercise
Exercise gets the blood flowing which can release endorphins and all kinds of happy good mood feelings which can get your body ready for sex. And it’s good for you.

Green Cleaning to Avoid Toxins
“Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” I am sure you’ve heard the old saying but that can depend on what you’re cleaning with. If you are using toxin filled harsh cleaning chemicals you could be damaging your health while cleaning your home. Opt for eco-friendly products made from natural sources for a greener, healthier clean.

Chapter 12: Eco-Responsible Birth Control

Having lots of children is not a responsible thing to do in an overpopulated, resource dwindling world but let’s face it most of us are not going to give up having children just to be green. The best thing to do though is be responsible with your contraceptives and keep unplanned, unwanted pregnancies to a minimum, however the experts continue to argue over what is the “greenest” birth control.

Condoms
One major problem with many forms of contraception is that they do not prevent against disease- only pregnancy so it always comes down to the condom which end up in landfills, oceans and waterways causing major pollution, not to mention the ick factor of seeing used condoms all over the place.

There are greener condoms as far as they are fair trade or made by eco-conscious companies but a condom is still a condom. Those that are made to break down and be biodegradable or compostable are not as effective as a regular latex condom. The greenest option is to be safe and go with what works.

Herbal Birth Control
There are many folk remedies and herbal birth control concoctions that women have used throughout history. Maybe they worked, maybe they didn’t but modern medicine doesn’t give any accreditation to herbal remedies and not enough studies have been done to show how effective or safe these herbal remedies are.

Responsible Sex
Being safe and responsible is earth friendly. Learn how to be more responsible in your safe sex practices.

Charting
Charting is an old fashioned and entirely natural way that helps a woman keep track of the changes in her body so she knows when she’s fertile and when she’s not. There is plenty of new technology to help a woman keep better track of what her body is doing.

Fertility Issues
Infertility rates have skyrocketed over the past decade or so and many blame the toxins that we are exposed to in everyday life. If you are trying to get pregnant but can’t living a greener life may help increase your fertility.

Sterilization
If you’ve already had children and don’t plan to have more, sterilization through getting your tubes tied or hubby getting a vasectomy is the best thing. Anything involving hormones, synthetic or real, like birth control pills, patches and rings have mixed reviews because discarded products can end up in landfills contaminating the soil and water.

Chapter 13: Intimate Time for Two

It’s so much more fun to go green with a partner than by yourself. Learn about some sexy ways the two of you can be intimately green. If you don’t have that special someone yet learn how to find the green guy or girl of your dreams.

Conserving Resources
Sexy showers for two and picnics in the park what else can you do as a couple to save resources?

Turn Down the Heat and Cuddle Under the Blankets
Is it hot in here or is it just us? Being green has never been sexier.

The Couple that Plays Together Stays Together
Sexual foreplay can come in many shades of green and in many ways that have nothing to do with sex but being out in nature, being active, or doing things together that make you feel good can all be amazing aphrodisiacs.

Get Sensual
Looking for the more sensual side of green? Or maybe the naughty side of green? It’s out there and I’ve got some of the places to look for it right here.

Pamper Your Mate Green
Massages, facials, mani/pedis, little green gifts…pampering has gone green.

Chapter 14: Romantic Green Getaways

Romance always needs a little time away and if you are greening the rest of your sex life, a romantic green getaway is the way to go. From luxurious eco-hotels, to simple and sustainable bed and breakfasts, there are eco-choices available…including your green travel options.

Romantic Staycations
Who says you have to go far away to have a good time? Look for fabulous green getaways close to home, or maybe in your own back yard.

Green Hotels
Find a green hotel to stay during your romantic rendezvous.

Eco-Resorts
From a wild place in the middle of the jungle to a resort with all the luxuries you can find the perfect getaway green style for you and your eco-honey.

Eco-Lodges
Often found in the middle of nowhere without electricity you have to be the adventurous type to check out one of these eco-lodges.

Skip the Cruise
Cruises have been found to be not eco-friendly at all dumping huge amounts of waste and toxins directly into the ocean and consuming vast amounts of natural resources. Skip the cruise unless you can find an eco-option.

Travel by Train
Train travel has been touted as the eco-way to travel and is the most popular method across Europe. Why not give it a try? Sure it can be cramped and a little weird being stuck with a bunch of stranger for long periods of time for long trips but if you book a cabin it can turn out to be a romantic adventure indeed.

Sample Chapters from The Green Sex Guide

Chapter 2: Look Good Green

Dress the Part
The quickest way to look like a greenie is by dressing the part. Forget about toxic pesticide laden clothes and opt for greener duds. Don’t worry with stores like Wal-Mart offering organic options you don’t have to spend a fortune either. And in case you didn’t know, used clothing is very green.

Toxic chemicals may be lurking in any or all of your beauty products. Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair spray, hair gel, hair mousse, body lotion, fragrances, nail polish, hand lotion, face powder, foundation, eye shadow, even in baby products– even those  made by popular brand names, have been found to contain chemicals that are known carcinogens like phthalates and parabens. Phthalates are industrial chemicals that have been proven to cause birth defects. Parabens are hormone disrupting compounds that mimic estrogen and have been linked to breast cancer.

The average adult American uses about ten personal care products per day. For many women you can triple that amount if you include each individual product and cosmetic: lipstick, eyeliner, eye shadow, foundation, concealer, powder, etc. It’s no surprise then that CDC scientists found that two million women of childbearing age may have phthalate levels of up to twenty times greater than the average person. Women of childbearing age use more personal care and health and beauty products than anyone else.
And all of those products can contain massive amounts of toxins thanks to a major loophole in the FDA; cosmetic companies can pretty much put whatever they want in their products with no required testing, no required monitoring of health effects and no required labeling.

Recent studies show that over 200 different chemicals are used in personal care products- with many being known toxins. It is estimated that over 90 percent of all beauty and cosmetic ingredients are derived from petrochemicals and other synthetics. The European Union has banned over 1,100 chemicals from use in personal care products because they are known to or suspected of causing cancer, reproductive problems and birth defects while the US has currently only banned around 10 ingredients from being used in personal care products.

In addition to phthalates and parabens here are some other possibly dangerous ingredients commonly found in cosmetic products that should be avoided:

  • Petrochemicals-these are the byproducts of crude oil and are known or suspected human carcinogens. They may appear as petrolatum, mineral oil or paraffin. They are found in lip balms, lipsticks, perfumes, hair relaxers, shampoos, anti-aging creams, body lotions, foundations and many other cosmetic products.
  • Mercury-mercury is found in some eye drops, mascaras and ointments. It is suspected of being a human carcinogen and human reproductive toxin.
  • Phenol carbolic acid-this is found in many lotions and skin creams. Research has linked it to circulatory collapse, paralysis, coma and respiratory failure.
  • Dioxane-often labeled as 1, 4 Dioxane. This is a petrochemical and synthetic derivative of coconut so may be lurking in any coconut like products. The chemical was first reported to be a carcinogen in 1965 and later in 1978 by the National Cancer Institute. Dioxane is found in chemical compounds that may be listed as PEG, polysorbates, laureth, and ethoxylated alcohols.
  • Toluene-this is made from petroleum or coal tar and is commonly found in synthetic fragrances yet is known to be harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), benzoic, and benzyl contain toluene.
  • Sodium laurel or lauryl sulfate also known as sodium laureth sulfate (SLS)-this product is found in car washes, degreasers and…90 percent of personal care products. It breaks down the skins moisture barrier and allows other chemicals to easily penetrate and enter the body.
  • Propylene glycol-used as a moisturizer in cosmetics. It is also a carrier for fragrance. It has been shown to cause dermatitis, skin irritation and may inhibit cell growth.
  • Acrylamide-has been linked to breast tumors in lab research. It is found in many face and hand lotions and creams.
  • Nanoparticles-these extremely tiny particles are largely untested and unlabeled in personal care products yet they are capable of being absorbed right into the bloodstream. They can be found in some bronzers, sunscreens, and eye shadows.

How do you know what is really in your products or if your products are safe? Check the labels on your products or go online to cosmeticdatabase.com. Many chemicals in your personal care and beauty products may not even be listed on the label. What is really lurking in your lipstick? Could your body lotion or face cream make you sick? Lead Free Lipstick

You may have heard about lead being found in lipsticks, over half of the thirty three brand names tested for lead in September 2007 contained detectable levels. The top amounts of lead were found in L’Oreal Colour Riche “True Red” and “Classic Wine”, in Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor “Maximum Red”, and in Christian Dior Addict “Positive Red”.

What is more disturbing than the lead being found in lipsticks? The fact that the companies and the FDA don’t seem to think anything is wrong with it. They claim that the minute levels that are found in cosmetics are safe. Lead is a proven neurotoxin which can cause learning and behavioral problems, reduced fertility and birth defects.

Some of the companies and researchers say that the level of lead found in lipstick is so small it is safe. Multiple studies show that no amount of lead exposure is safe. Lead builds up in the body over time. Consider this: A woman may apply lipstick several times a day, almost every day for years. When women eat, drink, lick their lips, or kiss someone the lipstick can be ingested. In the June 2002 issue of Glamour magazine it was reported that women inadvertently ingest about 4 pounds of lipstick in their lifetime. If every lipstick ingested contained lead I wonder how much lead could that could add up to and what the damage could be?

Some of the companies found to have lead in their lipsticks have changed their ways and become lead free while others haven’t changed a thing.

You can opt for unleaded by choosing natural, organic lip sticks.

Hemp Organics (www.colororganics.com) offer a wide variety of colors for all natural, hemp lipsticks, lip liners, lip tints and gloss. They are one of the best for color variety in the all natural lipstick lineup. Hemp Organics Lipsticks use hemp seed oil and natural pigments to create their lipsticks with a base that consists of 95% certified organic ingredients with no petro-derived dyes or F, D, & C pigmentation that can dry and crack your lips. No animal testing and no synthetic preservatives, the lipsticks are also fragrance free. Hemp Organics Lipsticks are also wheat and gluten free, petroleum free, and soy free.

Real Purity (http://realpurity.com) offers personal care, bath and body and pure cosmetics including lip glosses and lipsticks in a decent amount of color choices with lipsticks made from Candelila Wax, Beeswax, Aloe Vera Extract, Sweet Almond Oil, Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide, Kaolin, and Pycnogenol.

Natural Hair Removal
Many of us are into smooth bare skin and not hairy parts, but removing hair is not the most eco-friendly process. Shaving leaves behind a lot of waste at the landfill- more than 2 billion disposable razors are dumped every year into the landfills. Salon waxes are usually petroleum-based and the process can be more than a little painful. Then there’s hair removal creams. According to the Environmental Working Group, some hair removal creams contain suspected carcinogens that when combined with the absorption enhancers also in the creams, your body will actually absorb more of the carcinogens. Then add in all the fragrances that can contain hundreds of synthetic chemicals that make many people sick.
While this is one area that doesn’t have as many eco-choices there are options. You can remove hair in private areas with natural waxes, organic shave creams and lotions.
Intimate Shaving the Eco Way

Bikini Kitty’s (www.bikinikitty.com) products are organic, vegan, cruelty free and paraben free which makes for a smooth earth-friendly shave. The shave kit contains a body brush to get the blood flowing before your shower, a natural smooth shave gel that works wonders, razor oil to lube up your razor, two single blade disposable razors, and Bikini Kitty’s Everyday Magic Spray to help exfoliate and prevent ingrown hairs. The Bikini Kitty kit is the secret to a gloriously smooth shave, no bumps, no redness, and no irritation. Bikini Kitty also offers a shave kit just for guys, the Dirty Dog Shave Gear Kit. And for those who wax Bikini Kitty offers an all natural pre and post wax kit.

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Fair Trade Tea Tree Shaving Gel is about as green as you can get for hair removal. The USDA certified formula is completely free of synthetic ingredients and works great, even for sensitive skin.

Preserve makes razors from recycled plastic containers, the handles are made from 100% recycled plastic and can be recycled when you are finished with them, they have titanium blades that can be replaced, replacement blades come in packs of four, and the Preserve handle can also be used with Personna Acti-Flexx and Gillette Sensor blades.

Chapter 8: Play Green: Give Your Sexual Toy Box an Eco-Makeover

Those are signs the toy is made from phthalate filled plastic.

For more about finding safe sex toys visit the Coalition Against Toxic Toys at www.badvibes.org

Safer Sex Toys

Not all plastic or plastic like sex toys are dangerous. Safer sex toys are made from medical grade silicone, hard plastic, elastomers, Lucite and acrylic. As long as there are no added ingredients all of these materials are phthalate free.
Silicone is a popular sex toy material for those who want to be green yet still want a more traditional style sex toy. Silicone toys are non-porous, hygienic, and pliable; they warm to the body, retain heat and are also extremely durable. Because silicone can withstand high temperatures, you can boil silicone toys (as long as there is no vibrator unit inside) for 5-10 minutes to disinfect them (do not boil plastic, acrylic or Lucite toys) or you can even put them in your dishwasher. They also clean well with plain soap and water. Silicone is hypoallergenic and recommended to anyone who is has a rubber or latex allergy.
Lisa Lawless PhD owner of Holistic Wisdom, Inc. recommends these high quality brands of sex toys on her site as safe choices: Vibratex, Fun Factory, Erotic Embrace, Jollies, Tantus, Sue Johanson, and Lelo.  All of them are available for purchase on HolisticWisdom.com.

Begin Sidebar: Sex Stats and Facts- According to Planet Green’s Green Sex: By the Numbers twenty percent of adults worldwide claim to have used a vibrator. That’s a lot of people exposed to possible toxic materials. End Sidebar.

In her studies and research Lisa Wisdom, PhD has also discovered that it is not so easy to determine what is safe and what isn’t. She mentions that not all jelly toys are made with phthalates or unsafe materials and that the smell test isn’t always accurate either as many products may have a strange odor even if they are “safe”.

Holistic Wisdom’s “hope is to raise the bar on the issue of sex toy safety and to provide truthful, responsible information to consumers. We have gone straight to the manufacturer as well as consulted with multiple chemists to find out about every sex toy we carry. We have researched each product to determine what it is constructed of…we have pulled all of our questionable products…” Now that’s dedication to the consumer.

If only all stores and shops were so well educated and dedicated to healthy and quality products. The sad truth is many stores don’t know anything about the products they sell. So you have to educate yourself before you shop.

Glass, Granite, and Ceramic Toys

High quality glass sex toys are very green. They are made with a natural resource that can easily be recycled. Just make sure you get high quality products that will not crack or break. Trusted names are Phallix, Don Wand and RubyGlass21. All are made from heavy duty, durable Pyrex glass. Earth Erotics offers high quality glass dildos made by Jentle and their own exclusive line of Earth Erotics borosilicate blown glass wands.

I bet you are thinking glass may not be the material of choice for a sex toy, I urge you to reconsider. Sure as with anything glass there is a possibility it can break…like if you drop it on concrete or something. Normal use of a high quality glass toy should not result in any breakage. If you ever notice any cracks in your glass toy stop using it immediately.

You’ll never know what you are missing if you don’t try a glass toy. First of all even if you don’t use one, they are beautiful to look at. Some are brightly colored with swirls and whirls or covered in knobby little things. Once you try one you’ll be hooked on these safe, sexy, and so very sustainable sex toys. They are ultra smooth, hard as a rock, and they warm up to your body temperature. They are also super easy to clean.

Ceramic sex toys are not as popular as glass but with the rising need for eco-friendly materials ceramic toys are popping up at a few places like Coco De Mere. Ceramic dildos are slick and sexy works of art that are durable, made for lasting pleasure. Atraw Ceramic dildos are made from non-toxic stoneware clay and finished with a dinnerware safe glaze. Another company that makes ceramic toys is Goldfrau in Australia.

Glass and ceramic are super fun ways to play green. Of course if you want something even harder you can opt for polished granite.

I don’t know how eco-friendly they are other than that they are made out of natural resource. They are not as popular or plentiful as glass and perhaps not as stylish as ceramic, but they might be something fun to try. So far I have found two styles: the Twist Stone Dildo and the Polished Granite in a realistic penis shape.

Wood Dildos

Nothing says natural like wood. Sensuous curves, firm, smooth, sensuous designs and wood warms to the body and retains heat for a truly exceptional erotic experience.

Some wood dildos are hand carved with no two being alike. Others are made so artistically they appear as works of art.

I know you are probably thinking that as a treehugger you should be saving trees not using them as sex toys but trees are a renewable resource especially when they are responsibly grown and managed.

Nobessence ™ brand of wooden sex toys are made from sustainably farmed wood, mostly grown on their own tree farm- Tropical American Tree Farm. If they need something a little more exotic they make sure the wood is certified.

Not only is the wood eco-friendly but they coat their products with Lubrosity, a special odorless, hypoallergenic, waterproof, and chemical and bacteria resistant coating that is safe and natural. The Lubrosity coatings meet USP Class IV and VI Medical Device Implantation Standards. There are no waxes to melt away, no oils that leach out, no toxic petroleum distillates, and no phthalates to worry about.

Nobessence ™ hardwood dildos can be used with any type of lubricant and are easily cleaned with soap and water or sex toy cleaner.

Aluminum and Stainless Steel

Aluminum and Stainless steel are other renewable resources that can easily be recycled when you are done with them.

Stainless steel toys are sleek sexy and highly enjoyable. They are also nonporous and easy to clean. One popular brand is Njoy. Njoy sex toys are made of medical-grade stainless steel. They can be heated in warm water or cooled in the fridge. You can clean them by any means, just avoid abrasive cleansers.

Tantus Alumina sex toys are made from 100% aeronautic grade aluminum. They are designed to play with your pleasure zones. Aluminum is a lighter metal than stainless steel so it doesn't feel so heavy and is often easier to use. Each toy is anodized. This adds to the beauty of the toy and increases corrosion and wear resistance.

Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust and makes up about 8% of the weight of Earth's solid surface, so it is plentiful, recyclable and safe.

Rechargeable Batteries and Vibrators

If you have vibrating toys make sure to get yourself some rechargeable batteries to keep those babies humming green. Once they die all you have to do is recharge them, no need to toss them in the garbage or go buy new ones.

You’ll get the greenest vibrations from your toys by using rechargeable batteries. Keep a few sets on hand so when one set needs to be recharged you can pop in a set that are already fully charged and ready to go, just like you.

Go really green and buy a rechargeable vibrator. Rechargeable toys include the Aphrodite Wand made by the Berman Center, the Sinnflut available at Earth Erotics, the Lily and Iris made by Lelo, and many toys made by Fun Factory.

You know it’s green when its solar powered and yes now even sex toys can run on the energy of the sun. That’s right now you can recharge with the power of the sun. Find a toy with a solar charger and you’ll be a green sex goddess (or god).

If you want a vibrator that’s the ultimate in green then check out The Earth Angel. It is the first 100% green sex toy made by the Irish company, Caden Enterprises. The Earth Angel vibrator is made from recycled materials and it never needs charging, though you do have to work for your fun by using a wind-up crank to charge the internal rechargeable battery. You just crank the toy for 4 minutes in a clockwise direction to receive 30 minutes of vibrating pleasure. Too bad it looks like the Earth Angel is currently only available in Europe.

Where to Buy

Many sex toy stores are adding green products and green sections to their stores online or in the real world like SexToy.com, but some of the most trusted names in green sexual products are: Earth Erotics (www.eartherotics.com), Love Me Naturally (www.lovemenaturally.com), Holistic Wisdom (www.holisticwisdom.com),  The Smitten Kitten (www.smittenkittenonline.com), Libida (www.libida.com), Babeland (www.babeland.com), and in Canada you can shop safely at Eco Erotics (http://www.ecoerotics.ca) and EcoSex (www.ecosex.ca).

Earth Erotics’ tagline is “doing it green” and they are the first adult store to be certified by Green America and listed in the National Green Pages. All of their products are researched and tested to be high quality, safe, and eco-friendly.

As mentioned earlier Holistic Wisdom has strict standards for all the products they personally carry.

Love Me Naturally carries a wide variety of natural eco-based products while The Smitten Kitten sells only phthalate free sex toys, Libida is dedicated to selling low level and phthalate free sex toys, and Babeland carries a variety of eco, rechargeable, and safe sex toys. Coco De Mere carries “designer” and eco-friendly sex toys (at designer prices) and Eco Erotics is Canada’s eco-sex toy resource along with Eco Sex a store founded by two sisters, owners of Red Tent Sisters in Ontario- they are dedicated to providing safe sexual products and even offer an “ask the ecosexpert” section on their site.

Recycle Your Old Sex Toys

Now that you know what materials to look for when buying a green toy you can toss out your old, not so safe or eco-friendly sex toys. But instead of tossing them in the trash you can dispose of them in an eco-manner by recycling them.

That’s right you can recycle your old sex toys at www.recycleyoursextoy.com and look for new greener and healthier options like those made from high quality glass, 100% medical grade silicone, polished stone, surgical stainless steel, some wooden toys, hard plastics like acrylic, and softer toys made with elastomers.

It is simple and easy to help your planet and make your sex life a shade or two greener. You can get rid of your broken, old, unused or unsafe sex toy and recycle it. Materials that recycled are rubber, silicone, plastic, and the motorized parts.

All you have to do is ship the clean toy, with batteries removed, to:

Dreamscapes Recycling Program
5450 Bruce B Downs Blvd #366
Wesley Chapel, FL 33544

Include your name and email address so a $10 gift card can be sent to you to use toward the purchase of a new toy.

Sex is a big part of our lives and with an estimated 43% of Americans using sex toys it is important that what we use is safe and healthy. Consumers need to fight the government for safety regulations concerning sexual aides, not repression. Many in the sex toy industry are listening to what people want- safe, eco-friendly and healthy products but the government still doesn’t care about regulations and health standards. They would rather repress sexuality then express it safely.

Begin Sidebar: Sex Stats and Facts- Did you know that in some states in the US sex toys are actually illegal? Just a few years ago a woman in Texas was arrested for being a sex toy saleswoman; she worked for a direct sales home party company. The local police even performed an undercover operation to “catch her in the act of explaining the proper use of a sex toy” and arrested her. End Sidebar.

Sex is a fact of life and in today’s modern world we need to stop being embarrassed and stand up for our sexual freedom and our right to safe products.

Green sex toys allow us to have fun and experience a great sense of pleasure while being safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible.
