Interview with Matt Sheehan

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

My day job is an Environmental Scientist with the State of California.  I enjoy watching my Sacramento King’s and my daughter’s soccer games (look for her in the Olympics 2026).  My book is Urban Fantasy, which I didn’t know was such a genre until after the editing process.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Helmut Save the World takes place in an alternate timeline where magic is real, but is slowly being replaced by technological progress.  Helmut and Shamus are partners in The Fog City Detective Agency.  Helmut is the classical tough-guy detective, and Shamus is his Druid sidekick.

Are you a parent?

I am a father of one, which is more than enough.  My daughter Mackenzie is my pride and joy.  She is in second grade, and is a soccer player and karate kid. She’s also hysterical; occasionally on purpose.

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

Since writing is my second job (and really not a job yet because jobs pay actual money.  Please buy copies for all your friends) and Kenzie wants daddy time when I get home, I wrote most of this book after 8pm on weekdays.  I now take the bus to work, and get a god ninety minutes of writing in a day that way.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Most of the characters in this series are based on real people.  I am Shamus and my best friend is the narrator Helmut.  I had never written anything longer than a term paper before this, and I wasn’t sure for to develop characters for a novel.  Basing the characters on actual people made the process much easier.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I listen to music while writing.  My go-to artists are Miles Davis and The Strokes.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Helmut is my favorite, because I can say and do through him, things that would be impolite (or illegal) in real life.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

Helmut Saves the World is my first novella.  I am currently in the editing phase on Helmut’s second adventure, as well as writing his third.

What book are you reading now?

I’m currently re-reading Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe series.  I used to read more, but writing has sort of taken up most of that time.

Book Description:

My name is Helmut Haase and I'm one half of the Fog City Detective Agency--specifically, the half that pays all the bills. My partner, Shamus O'Sheehan, mostly drinks beer and naps. I keep him around because he's my friend, but also because he's a Druid. I'm just a detective, and there are plenty of those in Wudong, the Confederacy of Hesperia. There's not another Druid for miles.

We had it pretty good until the day we met Alek Pallas. He hired us to track down a thieving employee, and even though something was off, his big fat check was too much to pass up. But the man we found wasn't what we were led to believe, and neither was Alek.

I'm talking shape-shifters, fallen angels and a conspiracy involving the vicious Cretan Empire. At least we didn't die. Hope that doesn't ruin the story.
Why am I telling you all this? Someday I'd like some credit for saving the world. Maybe not the entire world, and maybe not alone, but I still deserve a medal. And perhaps a cash prize.

About the Author:

Moody and sarcastic at the best of times, the author should not be conversed with prior to his morning cup of coffee.  He excels at sitting with his feet up and drinking coffee or beer while reading, but has yet to find someone willing to pay for that service.  He has always been, and will always be, his mother’s favorite child.  Has been known to dangle participles.  Dreams of someday moving to a deserted island that supports coffee beans and hop vines.
