Interview: The Brede Chronicles by P. I. Barrington

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

Hmm, where can I begin? Let’s see. I’m ex-entertainment industry, radio and a tiny bit of journalism and came to fiction writing late, though I’ve always been chased by it. It’s been a wild ride at times but I wouldn’t give up one second of any of it.  I’ve written in most genres and point of view except perhaps literary.  I think that’s attributable to reading all genres including literary—the more diverse your reading, the more diverse your writing and technique and eventually your own style. Pretty much everything I’ve written (or co-written with my sister, Loni Emmert) has been under the umbrella of P.I. Barrington.  I haven’t experimented with other pen names just yet.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

The Brede Chronicles is definitely a soft science fiction romance/adventure that takes a few dark turns along the way. It centers on the relationship between Alekzander Brede and Elektra Tate and follows it from the time they meet along its rocky and sometimes downright cruel road. It’s becoming more of a saga than I realized.  From the early reviews people seem to like it and say that they aren’t really sure if they like or hate Alekzander—he’s that type of anti-hero.  Everyone loves Elektra though she isn’t classically beautiful. She’s a sort of inept type of scamp who matures and grows as the story proceeds. She has an almost blind obsession with Alekzander that I think a lot of people have had in their lives regardless how he treats her. But her strength comes from that; she learns to handle pretty much everything he throws at her.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

I never really thought about themes in this book but if anything it would be that humans shouldn’t be so quick to relinquish their rights for quick gain. That’s so inherent in our species. I can totally believe that if an alien race arrived and could help our economy, we’d cave and pander to them as long as they “saved” us. It’s something humans should work on, that impatience for a quick fix that many times leads us into tribulations. And that’s just us doing it to ourselves!

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

Most people think would be surprised I have a non-strident, feminine side. I’ve always been told that my image is of a “woman of the future” and it’s true that I’ve always been super career minded and forward thinking and demanding of my freedom but there’s another side to me. I think people would be shocked by the fluffy side of my personality, lol.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I paint in oils, watercolors, sometimes acrylics; I make up crafty things to do though I’m by no means a craftite lol! I just make up odd kinds of art with mixed media. I sketch, I hand embroider as an art. Being artistically creative is very emotionally expansive for me; it soothes me in some way and I feel fulfilled and deeply happy.  I love to garden and decorate my house. While for the most part I love modern (of course) but I also love vintage cottage too. My guilty pleasure? Don’t tell anyone but I love Mary Engelbreit, can you believe it?

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Isadora DayStar has to be my favorite. She’s so tortured and flawed and yet she can turn around and save someone’s life at the expense of her own. She doesn’t realize she can be a hero; she magnifies her flaws, her addiction and her mistakes until they take over her. She can’t recognize her own potential or her ability to try and make-up for her awful screw-ups. And yet, I love her. But then again I always fall in love with all my characters even the bad-assed ones like Alekzander Brede.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

This book is the first of The Brede Chronicles and sort of sets the stage for everything to come. The next book has a subtitle that may give away too many secrets so I won’t tell you that, but there will be some big surprises and hopefully a great ending! Relationships change and people are playing musical chairs in Book Two.  I think people will like it. I hope so.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

Aside from Brede #2, I’m planning to finish up a few novels that are almost complete but went to the back burner when I got obsessed with The Brede Chronicles. I have a vampire crime thriller, a military sci-fi romance and an historical western that’s nagging me to get underway. Oh, and I plan to adapt Isadora DayStar into a screenplay and maybe a series. I have a lot going on writing wise and I’ll be kept busy I’m sure!
