A Review of Vegan al Fresco by Carla Kelly

First of all I will confess, I am not a vegan, I’m not even a vegetarian.

Some people find it hard to believe that I am a green living guru without being a vegetarian. I could argue stats and facts all day long about pros and cons, history and health regarding whether or not being a vegan or vegetarian can contribute to saving the environment but the simple fact is, it all boils down to personal choice and preference. I like meat.

But…I also like my veggies and eating vegan dishes doesn’t bother me at all. I always love to have options when it comes to food. Plus I have vegan and vegetarian friends so it’s nice to have some recipes on hand when they come over for a cookout or dinner party.

This book provides some great recipes and it covers everything- from seasonings to desserts. It has tons of recipes for dips and sauces, salsas and relishes (I love appetizers) there are even recipes for drinks.

Some of my favorite recipes are the Smoky and Salty Roasted Nuts…and the Pumpkin Corn Cakes…those are going to be a great autumn dish.

The salad recipes make my mouth water and the grilled dishes are creative and inspired. But it’s the desserts that my family really loves. Vegan Ice Creams (several flavors, all delicious but my husband is truly in love with the Coconut), Banana and Carrot Cake, and the cookies…even your little cookie monster will love these.

This book has a huge selection of recipes, everything you need if you’ll be hosting a cookout or get together with vegan or vegetarian friends.

One complaint about the book- not enough images, I like recipes to come with photos of the food. Not every recipe has a corresponding photo, though there are enough images that the book is not bland. I just like to see the food, it makes me want to make it (and eat it) that much more.

But reading the descriptions was good enough to make my mouth water with anticipation.

Whether you are a vegan looking for new recipes or a non-vegan like me who just wants to broaden their food horizons and have options when hosting vegan friends, this book is a must have for your kitchen.

Interview with Sara Reinke

What inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always written stories, even when I was a very young child. I’ve always had a vivid imagination, and a love of words, and the two came together in a very big way for me. I think the first time I realized that I could possibly do something with these passions and talents for a living came when I read The Lord of the Rings trilogy as a child. I fell in love with the worlds and characters that Tolkien had created, and I knew that was what I wanted to do with my life.

Do you write in different genres?

I have written many different genres in the past, ranging from historical fiction set in ancient Greece, to science fiction thrillers set in deep space. For me the appeal comes more from the characters than the setting or genre. My stories are all very character-driven, and no matter where they are, or what kind of situation I thrust them into, I want to make them as believable and likable to readers as possible.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

Despite having written in multiple genres in the past, I’ve found myself most comfortable when writing urban fantasy and paranormal romance. A lot of times, especially with the Brethren books, my stories swing back and forth between the two. Some, like “Dark Thirst” are very much paranormal romance stories, while others, while containing romantic elements, don’t fall so neatly into that “romance novel” category. “Dark Vengeance Part 1” and “Dark Vengeance Part 2” are definitely in this latter category. Brandon and Lina are working through problems in their relationship in these books, and both are forced to face difficult challenges and obstacles.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I’m currently working on the next installment of the Brethren Series. Tentatively titled “In the Heart of Darkness,” it’s my first M/M paranormal, and focuses on two characters who appear in “Dark Vengeance, Part 2”: Julien Davenant and Mason Morin. I’ve been wanting to write a book featuring Mason for a while and there were some scenes featuring him and Julien in “Dark Vengeance Part 2” that really moved me. There was a natural chemistry between them, and a real tenderness evoked in the scenes. I knew I had to write about them next.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I’d love to! “Dark Vengeance Part 1” and “Part 2” focus primarily on Lina Jones and Brandon Noble, the heroine and hero from the “Dark Thirst,” the first book in the series. Although Brandon and Lina go on to play significant roles in most of the other books in the series, the “Dark Vengeance” titles are the first ones to again thrust them into the spotlight as the main protagonists.

From “Dark Vengeance Part 1”:
“I don’t think we should tell my family you’re a vampire,” Lina said as she straddled Brandon in the aftermath lovemaking.
With a curious expression, he signed to her in reply, first curling his fingertips in toward the tip of his thumb, then extending them out again, keeping his middle finger touching his thumb: OK…?
Although he couldn’t speak, there was no mistaking the inquisitive tone of his response. “I think it’s going to be enough of a surprise, your family helping me out and all, without adding that into the mix,” Lina tried to explain, sitting back again, balancing atop him.
Brandon was one of an ancient sect of vampires called the Brethren. Raised in seclusion on a communal estate in Kentucky, he and his family had lived apart from humans, yet hidden among them. A brutal attack in Brandon’s childhood had left him deaf and mute, despite the otherwise extraordinary healing capabilities with which his species was endowed. Lina’s older brother Jackson, who himself had been rendered deaf as the result of illness in his youth, had been hired as a tutor for Brandon during the younger man’s adolescence. She’d first met Brandon then; gangly, shy and hopelessly uncertain about himself, he’d been the epitome of teen-age awkwardness. She’d been five years his senior, charmed by his youthful ingenuity, but otherwise oblivious to his existence.
Had things changed since then. Just weeks past his twenty-second birthday, Brandon was now without question the most strikingly handsome man she’d ever seen, with a body so lean and sculpted, he could have been a portrait study for Michelangelo himself.
“Mom pretty much hates your grandfather because of Jackson getting fired all those years ago,” she told him pointedly. His eyes were fixed on her mouth as he watched her speak, reading her lips.  When he nodded once in comprehension, she added, “And that’s not even counting how Jackie feels about the whole thing.”
Augustus can be an asshole, Brandon conceded, signing again. With a pointed look, he added, But he’s changed now. And when she rolled her eyes, he  added, I keep telling you. He has.
Splaying her fingers, she touched her thumb to her sternum, then pivoted her hand forward. Fine, the gesture said. Her body language, however, told another story altogether as she shifted her weight, leaning to the side and swinging her left leg around, abruptly dismounting from him.
Lina… With his left forefinger and thumb, he formed the letter L, then tapped it against his heart—his pet-sign for her.
Ignoring him, she climbed out of bed and padded across the shadow-draped room toward the bathroom. Without closing the door, she stood over the sink and splashed water on her face. When she looked up, dripping, she saw him in the mirror, standing in the doorway, his brows lifted unhappily.
We’ve already talked about this, he said.
Talk was putting it mildly. Not even six full months into their fledgling relationship, and in that week alone, Lina and Brandon had two fights. Not disagreements, discussions or differences of opinions, but arguments, full blown and angry.
How can you think that Augustus Noble is going to somehow take your father’s place? she’d demanded hotly of him in sign language. Stricken with grief and deeply depressed, his father, Sebastian Noble, had committed suicide earlier that year. Brandon and Sebastian had always been close, and his death had, in Lina’s opinion, left Brandon emotionally vulnerable to his grandfather’s manipulation.  Why the hell would you want that?
That’s not what I think, he’d shot back. How can you even ask me that, Lina? He’d finger-spelled her name, as sure a sign as any that he’d been pissed off. No one can replace my dad. Not ever. Augustus only wants to make up for the past—and maybe I want that, too. Maybe I need that right now.
Need what? she’d asked. To have a monster in your life?
No, he’d snapped. To have a family, Lina, the one thing I never felt like I had outside of Tessa and my dad, the only goddamn thing I’ve ever really wanted. To feel like I belong.
His words had stung her to the quick, although her hands had fallen to her sides at this and she’d offered him no retort. I thought I made you feel that way, she’d thought.
In this scene from “Dark Vengeance, Part 2” however, Lina and Augustus have established a tentative truce. Brandon has gone missing, and Lina sets off to find him, fearing that he may be in danger. She enlists help from a very unlikely person—Augustus Noble, Brandon’s grandfather. Augustus is the patriarch of the Noble clan and the man Lina holds pretty much responsible for all of the troubles in her romance with Brandon:
Lina tried but was unable to stifle a yawn with the back of her hand. It was nearly morning; she’d been up all night, and all at once, despite her fascination with the topic of conversation, the weight of her exhaustion seemed overwhelming.
Augustus smiled. “You need to rest.”
Lina shook her head. “No. We need to get back out and start searching for Brandon.”
Augustus arched his eyebrow. “And where should we begin? You told me that you and your police partner had been unable to track down Tejano Cervantes’s whereabouts in Bayshore to date.”
She folded her arms. “Maybe you could sense him if we drove around enough, hit as much of town as we can before dawn.” It was a ridiculous notion and she knew it, like suggesting they search for a needle in a haystack using a refrigerator magnet.
“I’m as anxious to find Brandon as you are,” Augustus told her. “And as worried about him. But I think it would be prudent to rest before we begin again, to review our evidence and…as you call them in your line of work…our leads with fresh eyes in the morning. Neither one of us will be doing Brandon—or ourselves—any good if we’re exhausted.”
He had a point, Lina realized. Goddamn it.
“Fine. I'll get my keys.” She'd played chauffeur for the evening, in part because she knew her way around town and Augustus didn't, and in part because she'd still worried about him being drunk when they'd left the hotel. He'd insisted that he was fine—and he'd seemed fine, his accelerated metabolism having eliminated any hint of the brandy's effects—but she still hadn't wanted to take any chances.
“I can call for a cab.”
“Are you kidding? They'll rip you off blind. You have rich-and-from-out-of-town written all over you.”
Augustus glanced down at the front of his shirt, his brow raised speculatively. “It’s probably not safe for you to be driving when you’re fatigued,” he said. “Statistically, isn’t it as dangerous as driving while impaired by alcohol?”
He sounded innocent enough, but she didn’t miss his pointed gaze. She’d used the alcohol argument against him earlier at his hotel, when he’d insisted he was alright to drive. And she knew he was right; she’d been a cop long enough to be well familiarized with the statistics. Letting him win the argument, however, and get a cab, was out of the question.
“Fine.” Reaching for a nearby rocking chair that had belonged to her Granddaddy Clarence, she snagged a crocheted throw blanket and did as the name implied—threw it at him. “I’ll get you a pillow. You can crash on the couch. I know it’s hardly the Bayshore Grand, but…”
“It will be fine,” he interjected mildly—and as she yawned again, he added, “And undoubtedly safer.” He tipped his head in a genteel nod. “I appreciate your hospitality.”
“Yeah, well…it doesn’t mean we’re friends or anything,” Lina mumbled. Frowning slightly, she headed for Latisha’s bedroom to grab an extra pillow, still not quite believing she’d just invited him to spend the night at her mother’s home. Somebody pinch me, she thought.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I think the biggest challenge I’ve had to face in my writing is finding the time to do it. That’s probably a universal lament among authors, though. Two years passed between the publication of “Dark Vengeance Part 1” and “Part 2,” which was way more time than I’d intended to come between them. In that time, I completed my Associate’s degree online in Nursing, and started working full-time as an RN. I also went back to school to pursue my Bachelor’s in Nursing. In addition to that, I’m a mom, a wife, a pet owner and homemaker, so there’s always something new to clean or juggle around here. I have to admit that the stress in my life became a little overwhelming, and unfortunately my writing took a backseat to all of the other demands I was facing. But I’ve cut back on my work and school hours and am trying to give myself and my family a little more time and attention—and in the “me” category, this includes writing. It’s been refreshing to get back into the habit again, and I’ve loved diving back into the world of the Brethren.

Do you have to travel much to do research for your books?

I don’t physically travel, per se, but I love to do research, and before beginning any new manuscript, I dive into Google. A long time ago, I aspired to learn something new with every book I complete. In a series like the Brethren books, where I’m very familiar with their world, and it’s been well-established, that can be a challenge. But as some examples, I’ve incorporated characters like Brandon, who is deaf and mute, with physical disabilities so I can learn more about those disabilities in the course of my writing. I like to incorporate characters from different cultures and nationalities—for example, Pilar Cadana and her brother, Valien, who appear in both of the “Dark Vengeance” books are Puerto Rican, and I tried to learn more about their language and culture when writing about them. In some of the Brethren books, I include flashbacks to historical periods. You’ll see this in “Dark Vengeance Part 2,” for example, and I love learning about the way people dressed, talked, what they ate and drank, what holidays they celebrated and how, etc. for these scenes. Incorporating research into my books helps keep the characters and stories new and fresh to me as a writer and, I hope, to my readers.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

I actually did it myself. I’ve worked in the past as a graphic artist, so I’m somewhat familiar with Photoshop. I’ve used professional cover designers in the past, including Kimberly Killion at Hot Damn! Designs and Robin Ludwig at Go Book Cover Design, but even though I’m nowhere near as good as they are, I still enjoy the process, and make most for myself now. I recently discovered photographer/graphic artist Taria Reed’s site, The Reed Files, for stock photography, and she’s proven to be an invaluable resource for my cover art muse!

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Write to please yourself, to make yourself happy. It’s harder than it sounds. When the first two books in the Brethren series were released from Kensington, I found an agent and tried writing what I thought would sell. I followed her every suggestion for revision, to the point where I lost confidence in myself, my ability to judge what worked for my characters and stories. And in the end, she still wasn’t satisfied. I don’t have an agent now, and I no longer try to necessarily follow genre trends when I’m writing. Yes, it’s important to write something marketable, and to be savvy about what is currently “hot,” but it’s more important to trust your instincts as a writer, to enjoy what you’re doing, to feel passionate and enthusiastic about it.

Interview and Giveaway with Christine Amsden

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Stolen Dreams is the fourth and final volume in the Cassie Scot series – the tale of a woman born into a family of sorcerers but with no magic of her own. It's hard to talk about Stolen Dreams without talking about the series as a whole, because the four books come together to tell a complete story. (In other words – read them in order or beware!)  There is magic, mystery, and romance, but at the heart of it all is Cassie who must learn that you don't have to be the most powerful person around to be a hero. We all have our gifts.

Are you a mom? If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

Yes! I have an 8-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter. They have been my inspiration since they were born. And actually, though there have been ups and downs, overall I think I have been more productive with the kids than I was before having them. I tried writing “full time” for about a year before I had my son and to tell you the truth, staying home to write was a lonely existence. Creative work isn't like other kinds of work; the more time you have to spend on it doesn't necessarily equate to more productivity. Quality time is more important, and when the kids entered my life they gave me balance. (Okay, newborns are nuts. Don't try to write with newborns. But that doesn't last long!)

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

I'm sure all of it comes from my own experiences to some degree or another. It all comes out of my head! But every once in a while, yes, there is a specific tie. In the third book of the Cassie Scot series, Mind Games, I wrote a scene in which Cassie visits an extremist church and is given a hard time for her family connections and being a witch. If you substitute the word “Catholic” for “witch,” this scene came straight from my own memory.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

Yes. You don't have to be “special” to do good in this world. We each have unique gifts to share.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I'm legally blind. I'm drafting my answers in 36-point font right now. I'm also an editor (yes, a blind editor). I'm very good at it, once I blow things up a bit.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

Chocolate is my guilty pleasure. I also enjoy playing games, lately D&D.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

The Time Traveller's Wife – Great idea, terrible execution. I could have done it better. :)

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

The story is over for Cassie, but two of her friends got too big for footnotes in her series and are getting single-volume spin-offs of their own. Madison's Song is finished and undergoing editorial review. It should be available in 2015. Kaitlin's Tale is a work in progress. After that … I don't know. I'll just have to wait for inspiration.

What book are you reading now?

Under the Dome by Stephen King. I binged hard on the first series of the TV show with the same name – watched all 13 episodes in 4 days – and got curious about where it came from. It's a long book (it's Stephen King), but at not quite halfway through, I'm tentatively thinking that the show's writers should have stuck a little more closely to the book. Which is saying something, since I enjoyed the show!

Thanks so much for having me here today. I'll be around for questions, or you can e-mail me at christine.amsden@yahoo.com

Conclusion to the Cassie Scot series.

Excerpt (From Chapter 7)

“I–” My cell phone rang, saving me the challenge of coming up with a plausible lie. I answered without checking the caller ID. “Hello?”
“Cassie, dear, how are you and my grandson getting along?” It was Abigail. I had the volume turned up loud enough that Evan could hear. His eyes widened, and he stepped closer. Too close, but I pretended the proximity didn’t affect me in the slightest.
“Abigail, where are you? What are you doing?”
“You know the answer to that question, Cassie. And as much as I’d love to give you and Evan a chance to work through more of your issues, I find I have a selfish last request.”
            My heart squeezed. “What?”
“I don’t want to die alone.” The words were a bare whisper, but both Evan and I heard.
            “Where are you?”
“At the overlook around back. Hurry.” The call ended.
“What did she mean?” Evan asked. “What do you know?”
I was already on my way out the front door, Evan right on my heals. To simplify matters, and to get to her as soon as possible, I decided to give him as much of the truth as I could. “She says someone has to die, and if it’s not her, then it’s going to be your parents.”
“What? When did she say that?”
“In snatches for a week, but most of it earlier tonight, right before I came over.” I was out the door now, heading around back up the paved path wide enough for Abigail’s wheelchair to navigate.
To my immense relief, Evan didn’t question me further. He followed me for a few paces, then rushed ahead, moving too quickly for me to keep up even when I broke into a run.
She had her chair parked at the top of the hill, overlooking the lake below and a spectacular sunset above. Either I had never seen colors so vibrant before, or I had never paid proper attention. It was as if the heavens were saying farewell.
My father was nowhere in sight. I had half expected to see him there, and managed a sigh of relief when I didn’t. It was short lived, though.
Evan knelt in front of his grandmother, holding her right hand in his. When I arrived, I sank to the paved earth at her other side, taking her left hand in mine. The skin was papery thin and so frail I feared it would flake away.
“Thank you.” She didn’t look at either one of us, and her voice was whisper-thin.
“You don’t have to die,” Evan said. “There has to be another way out. How are you going to die?”
“I-I don’t know. I can’t see past my own death. It’s made things... difficult these past few months.”
“Then how do you know you’re doing the right thing?” I asked. Demanded might be a better word. “How do you know your death will prevent anything?”
“I didn’t have long to live anyway. My heart is weak, and.... I don’t want to talk about it. Please. I don’t have long. Talk to me about something nice.” There was a hitch in her voice that told me no matter how she had prepared for this moment, she wasn’t ready to die. That realization, more than anything else, brought the first tears to my eyes.
“Don’t cry for me. I’ll be all right. My husband’s been gone these many years now, and I’ve been alone.”
I felt Evan’s free hand take mine, and I didn’t even think about yanking it away. For once, his touch didn’t feel anything except comforting. He needed it. I needed it. And so it was.
“Did you like my invitations?” Abigail asked.
“Why did you send them?” Evan asked.
“I don’t suppose you two would consider it a dying woman’s last request?” she asked.
            “Nice try,” I said.
Evan didn’t say anything, although I became more aware of his hand holding mine.
“Seriously,” Abigail said, “will you at least talk to one another? Really talk?”
I closed my eyes, swallowed hard, and nodded. The request was at least as manipulative as the first because she knew I couldn’t deny this one. It was too reasonable.
            “Good.” She squeezed my hand.
            That’s when her house exploded.

Interview and Giveaway: Glimpse of Darkness by Nicole Delacroix

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I was born in Frankfurt, Germany, my mother is a German national and my father was in the US military.  My father was military so we moved around a great deal, and making friends for me was difficult.  So my mother bought me a diary when I was 10 and I would scribble in it all the time. From that point on, I learned to live in my head and write everything down, so I guess I owe my mother for making me into a writer.  I currently have the one publication in Paranormal/Fantasy, but I’ve completed a second submission in the Non-Fiction/Humor genre .

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Glimpse of Darkness is book 1 of a planned 4 book series that will follow the main characters, Daniel and Charlie, all over the world in a search for her missing father and her missing birthright.  Without giving too much away, there will be twists and turns along the way as well as an alternative history to some interesting events in history.  I’ve flushed out the story from beginning to end long before I began working on the first book, so I know exactly what will happen in each volume of the series and I know where the story ultimately ends.  My only “up in the air” item is that I was toying with the idea of making it a trilogy instead of 4 full books, so the number of volumes may change, but the story remains the same.

Are you a mom?

I am not currently a mom, although I’d love to be a mom.  I am going to be a new Auntie very soon, and I’m sure I’ll be more obnoxious than the mommy J

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Ha!  I wish, I’d love to be half angel, but I’m more like half devil… okay more than half.  But to answer your question, no I don’t think there was any one event in my own life that inspired the story.  I think I was just interested in angels and the way we view them and started thinking of how I could say what I wanted to in an entertaining way.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

I have a deep passion for the subject that I write about, and I hope that comes through in my writing.  I love my characters; they are more like family than made up people in my head.  I like the fact that my main character is a strong female character, she doesn’t know it, but she is.  Also I’ve incorporated real places that I’ve had the honor of visiting or living in/near into my story, so I hope the love I have for these places comes across in my story.   I’d like to think that my own personal thoughts about how, as a species, we tend to misinterpret too many things would help my readers think about how they view the world and hopefully see some things in a new light.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I’m a pretty honest person and I have a habit of oversharing.  Not sure that anyone would be particularly surprised by that.  Also, I’m not afraid to say what’s on my mind, possess a large vocabulary, and am fluent in pith, sarcasm, double entendres and profanity – and I’m not afraid to use them.   I’m also in love with everything British, especially Graham Norton’s talk show.  I’m probably a bit of an over-sharer since I’m working on a project to see how brave everyday people are where I’ve devised a very in-depth and personal survey, so I’ve actually answered 50 of the most excruciatingly personal questions known to mankind on my website.  (More information than anyone would ever want on me)

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I'm an avid reader (what writer isn't?) and I try to read a book a week.  I'm also a huge Sci-Fi fan, so anytime there is a new SciFi movie out, I'll be first in line (Can't wait for the new Star Wars!).  Other than that, I work a full time job as an IT Professional and am excited that I'm going to be an Aunt very soon.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

50 Shades of Grey series – I don’t write romance, but I was disappointed by parts of that series and I would love to revamp it.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

I’m lucky to have a best friend that constantly challenges me, she’s challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and write a horror/ghost story.  Not my genre for writing, but I love the stories and it’s forcing me to flex those writing chops.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

I would love to be an angel.  Especially having the abilities that I give to my angels, that would be so much fun.  I think I’m a bit of an oddball, as I tend to like the periphery characters more than the main characters.  For me, my favorite character is a tie between Fifi and Mo, they are so very distinctly different characters and their backstories were the most interesting to write.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

It actually is part of a series.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

I’m currently working on several things.  I’m focused on book two – the sequel to Glimpse – which is titled Blind Horizon.  In addition, I kick around a ghost/horror story and a World War II story I’ve been formulating.  My pet project is a non-fiction book that focuses on bravery, tentatively titled How Brave Are You?  I’ve finished that book and am currently shopping around literary agents.

What book are you reading now?

Currently I’m reading several books, mostly for review.  Slapshot of Love by Gary Pearson, The Haunting of Wolfe Haven by Debbie Heaton, The Birth of Death by Joseph Macolino and The Universe Builders by Steve LeBel.

What is in your to read pile?

Jason Jones Voyages of the White Skull, Bev Stout Secrets of the Realm, and Sariah Wilson The Ugly Stepsister Strikes BackAll three are really interesting new voices.

Book Description:

Charlene (Charlie) Bennett is a simple waitress in the wilds of Hyder, Alaska whose father has just gone missing. Isolated and alone, her fathers' disappearance is nothing new to her, but this time things are a little different.

For starters, there is a handsome stranger, Daniel that has come to town and while Charlie has never taken more than a passing interest in strangers, she has an immediate and intense attraction to this one. Secondly, she's soon to find out that this stranger isn't what he appears. He's about to throw Charlie's entire world into a major upheaval.

Now Charlie has to decide if she believes this strangers' incredible story and follow Daniel or if she wants to stay in the only home she's ever known for an uncertain future and an absentee father. As she comes to terms with what Daniel shows her, she realizes that he's the only true thing in her life and leaves everything she knows behind to follow the handsome stranger.

Excerpt:

Daniel finally turned to her and acknowledged that she was there. "You've guessed right. We are just ahead of the cannery and yes we are going to catch a cannery truck. There is a shipment leaving in about 15 minutes that will come this way.  When they come this way the pack will delay the driver so we can sneak onto the back of the truck. What I need you to do is wait until I give the signal to go and then run to the back of the truck quickly and quietly without drawing any attention. It's imperative that the driver does not know we're on the truck.  He can never see us if he does this whole thing will fall apart.  Do you understand?" Charlie nodded, she didn't like the plan, but she would do what Daniel asked of her.

"We will stay in the back of the truck until they get to Washington state and then we can make our way from there. But it's very important that until we make it out of town and on the highway that you don't say or think anything. Focus on your music, keep your eyes closed and try not to listen. If you hear something make sure it doesn't break your concentration Charlie, it's very important. I can't block you and both our lives depend on you keeping quiet. I know you're tired and upset and I haven't been very forthcoming, but we're almost out of here. You've had your life in my hands up to now and the only way I can return the trust is to tell you that my life is in your hands until we make it out of town. All you have to do is focus on the music in your head; can you do that for me?"

Charlie felt the gravity of his words and hoped that she could come through for him.  She would definitely try her very best to do exactly what he wanted her to do.  She had managed to grab her ear buds when they were leaving the cabin, she figured she could dig those out and put them in. They weren't completely noise canceling but when she had them in she found it easier to focus.  Besides she could put her MP3 player on and the music could just play helping her focus even more.

Daniel started to look a little relieved that she was taking his words to heart and coming up with the best solutions to keep them both safe. He relaxed his grip on her hand a little letting her know that he understood what she was thinking and was on board with her plan.
They hadn't been sitting very long when they heard the unmistakable rumble of the oversized cannery truck in the distance. She figured they had about 5 minutes before the truck made it to where they were hiding. Her adrenaline was pumping and her tiredness eased up and she was on pins and needles waiting for the truck to make it around the curve.
It seemed like forever before the truck lights showed on the horizon meaning that the truck was about 3 minutes away.  Daniel looked focused on what was going on and the pack was on edge as well. It was clear a plan was in play but Charlie was clueless as to what exactly it was. All she knew was her part in it, pay attention get to the back of the truck without being seen.
It wasn't long before the noisy truck was making its way around the curve and picking up speed.  Charlie started to let her doubts creep in, how were they going to be able to jump on a moving vehicle. When without warning the answer to her unspoken question showed itself. The missing pack members were corralling a wild black bear on the other side of the road. It was clear by their behavior that they were going to push the bear into the road in front of the truck about 30 feet ahead of where Charlie and Daniel were hiding.

Charlie started to worry that the bear would make it across the road before the truck could make it, when the rest of the pack moved into action. They ran up to intercept the bear and block it onto the road, there was no escape as the truck barreled down on the bear. Since the curve in the road had hid the bear, the truck slammed into the poor animal. As soon as they heard the tires squeal, Daniel pulled Charlie up and they both ran to the back of the truck. Daniel quickly cut the seal on the truck as the wolves started howling loudly.  Sound cover to pull up the door so they could jump in, the pack had thought of everything.

Only Charlie worried that the bear may have damaged the truck too much for it to continue its journey, but she didn't have to wait long as she heard the bear growl and the pack disperse and the unmistakable sound of the cab door closing. Soon enough her fear was squashed as the truck lurched into movement. Charlie dug out her MP3 player and ear buds and started listening to music.  She had her classical mix playing David Garrett so she was instantly lost in the music.
