Guest Blog: Have the myth-busters gone too far? by Morgan St. Knight

Have the myth-busters gone too far?

               By Morgan St. Knight

I’ll be honest: this is a hot-button issue for me. I’m a huge fan of classical mythology. I am not a huge fan of the whole “reimagining” trend that seems to have skewed the portrayals of mythological characters in print, movies and television these days.

I know I walk a thin line myself with some of the creative license I take in my first book, “Curse of Prometheus: a tale of Medea”.  My interpretation of the myth of Prometheus, not to mention the deaths of Medea’s children, is definitely rewriting the standard storyline. Oh Muses, let me not be a hypocrite, let not my own words come back to bite me in the posterior!

It’s not that I don’t understand the need for reinterpretation to keep a story fresh and relevant for a modern audience. I really do. But sometimes, it just goes too far.

So where do I draw the line? As the late Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart said about porn, I know it when I see it. My gauge is this: does the interpretation make me say: “Well, it could have happened that way,” or does it leave me saying “No way, that’s absolutely ridiculous!”

For example, “The Mists of Avalon” was a compelling reinterpretation of Arthurian myth that was absolutely believable. I could see the story unfolding that way. Marvel’s interpretation of Thor and the other gods of Asgard?  Yeah, I can buy it.

When does it cross into the realm of the unbelievable? For me, it happens when a writer takes away the original dignity of the mythological figures involved and reduces them to caricatures.

For classical mythology, the trend started in earnest in the 1990s with the “Hercules” series starring Kevin Sorbo, and continued with the spinoff series “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Young Hercules”. All of them reduced the Greek gods to one-dimensional clowns or penny-dreadful villains who took delight in torturing humans for no reason. Aphrodite as a Valley girl? Apollo as a surfer dude? And, most heinous of all, the plotline at the end of the Xena series which allowed the gods of Olympus to be killed. Just like that.

No, no, NO! The gods of Olympus are immortal. They do not die. But writers jumped on that bandwagon, and now it’s become a feasible plotline when dealing with Greek gods (look at “Wrath of the Titans”). Making the gods into all-too-human characters who are quick with a wisecrack but can’t get out of a locked closet (because humans don’t pray to them anymore, and that apparently is the only source of their power) is a common trope now.

I know there are those who will argue that making characters like Greek gods vulnerable is a necessary adaptation. I attended a workshop taught by a writer who insisted that you can’t have an immortal main character, because the reader needs the tension generated by the possibility that the character could die. That same writer also said you should never, ever write a book in the first person because that character can’t die believably if you want to keep the first person narration uninterrupted, so automatically the reader will lose interest.

I guess she never read “The Lovely Bones” or “The Vampire Lestat”, both of which utilized first person.  Both of which, if I remember, did very well in book sales. So much for readers not being interested.

So yes, I may be a stick in the mud, but when I write about the ancient gods in a modern setting, I intend to keep their original majesty and power intact. I’m not going dumb them down. It’s not about being stubborn or blindly adhering to some cannon. It’s about getting creative with what is already there, rather than tossing out the basic premises just because they pose challenges.

If you tell your guests you’re serving hamburgers, then get good beef, mix in good seasonings, and fire up the grill. Don’t head out to McDonald’s for the dumbed-down version of a good hamburger. If you’re giving your readers Greek gods, give them honest-to-goodness Greek gods, not watered-down clowns who couldn’t find their a** with both hands in the dark.

As for the gods being immortal, as many writers in the paranormal genre can tell you, there are far worse fates than death, especially if you have to live that fate for eternity. In that sense, the gods really do have it harder than the rest of us.

The ancient world's most notorious sorceress has just become the modern world's only hope for survival.

Book Description:

How do you fight a god of light who has been seduced by darkness? That’s the challenge Medea Keres must meet. Posing as a wealthy young heiress in modern day Atlanta, no one knows she is the original Medea, the sorceress from ancient Greek legends.

As priestess of the witch goddess Hecate, Medea is charged with hunting demons that would otherwise overrun the world. Now she must face a far greater adversary. One of the twelve shining Olympian gods has turned rogue, violating the edict against human sacrifice. As the body count quickly rises, Medea knows her enemy is getting stronger.

With the help of the underworld nymph Orphne and the hero-god Heracles, she must find a way to unmask the evil so that the other Olympians will take action.

But as she probes deeper into a blood-soaked labyrinth of suspense and intrigue, Medea finds a net of deceit and treachery that will require all of her cunning to escape.

Pasiphae turned back to Heracles, her nose wrinkling instinctively at the sight of the two corpses he was carrying, one slung over each shoulder.
“And these would be?”
“Someone I need help with,” I offered tentatively.
Circe raised an eyebrow. “I know you understand the healing arts better than that, Medea. These two are a long way past help and... Heracles, what are you DOING?
Her voice became progressively shriller as Heracles approached one of the hall’s spotless divans. It was upholstered in beautiful pastel pinks and mauves.
“Just putting these chaps down, my dear,” Heracles said cheerfully. I’d chosen the least mutilated corpses among the field hands, but they were still quite a mess.
“You most certainly are not!” Circe’s golden eyes were already flashing. Heracles froze in mid-stoop, quickly re-adjusting his balance to stop the bodies from falling onto the sofa. I couldn’t help giggling a bit at the comic pose, but I don’t suppose he saw anything funny about it.
“For pity’s sake, it took me nearly a hundred years to perfect the magic to weave dawn’s light into fabric. I will NOT have you putting those—things—on the furniture,” Circe fumed.
She turned to me.
“It’s always delightful to see you Medea, and your friends,” she condescended to give a slight nod towards Orphne. “And I realize you’re living a more Bohemian lifestyle these days. But really! You can’t tell me your human friends would appreciate you bringing two dead bodies when you come to call. Couldn’t you just bring chocolates?”
“I’m not going to leave them here, Aunt Circe,” I reassured her. “And I promise I’ll bring some chocolates next time I come. But first, I need you to help me find out something about them.”
She snorted impatiently.
“They’re dead and they’ve started to rot. There, that’s two things about them. Will you kindly remove them now?”
I smiled and shook my head.
“I mean something specific. And you and Pasiphae are the only ones I know who have the skill to do it.” I was buttering them up shamelessly, and they knew it.
Heracles cleared his throat diplomatically.
“Not that they’re really any sort of burden to me, but do you mind if I put these fellows down now? I think one of them is seeping.”
Pasiphae rolled her eyes. “Certainly, just toss them anywhere. We don’t mind oozing corpses on the floor at all. Why not invite the Harpies over for a potluck while you’re about it?” Now that was overstating the case a bit. The evil half-bird, half-woman monsters were voracious eaters. If they left anything uneaten, they fouled it with their shit out of sheer spite.
Circe held up her hands in a gesture of defeat. “Just let me handle it,” she said, facing Heracles and lifting her arms. The two bodies floated off his shoulders and remained suspended in mid-air. He stood up, making a relieved sound in his throat. Sure enough, there was a large smudge on his skimpy outfit.
“Here, let me,” I said. I went over and put my hand on the stain. Of course I could have done it without touching, but what the hell, why not cop a feel if the opportunity arose? The muscles of a god are nothing to miss if you get the chance.
I removed my hand after a few seconds, and the tunic was immaculate.
“Could we please get back to the issues at hand?” Pasiphae interrupted as she gestured towards the floating bodies. “What do you need us to do with those?”
“I need you to bring them back to life, so they can tell me about their deaths,” I said.
Circe and Pasiphae looked at one another. Whether or not they were communicating telepathically, I was certain they were thinking the same thing.
“Well, that settles it. You’ve become completely unhinged.” Pasiphae said with resignation. “Why would you bring two dead humans here for something that you could just as easily ask Hecate to do? In the privacy of your own home, if needed. You’re her priestess, after all. And if I’m not mistaken, she is an underworld goddess, no? This should be a specialty of hers.”
“Yes,” I admitted. “But I can’t get her involved just yet. I’ve got... a slight problem to deal with.”
The refreshments had arrived. Wine was being poured at a table surrounded by more divans, and another nymph had brought in a tray of pastries soaked in honey.
Circe gestured to the seating area, extending the move a bit to wave the bodies away to a corner of the room. They hung like sulking children denied a place at the grownups’ table.
“Tell us all about it. And make sure to include all of the juicy details.”
I wondered if she’d regret her invitation once she heard what I had to say.

Guest blog and Giveaway: Why I Write with Deanna Kahler

Why I Write

By Deanna Kahler

People write for many reasons. Writing not only allows you to express your creativity, but is also therapeutic and can help you deal with complex emotions. It enables you to explore various concepts, live out your fantasies and temporarily escape to another world. And for many, writing is just plain fun.  However, there is a much deeper and more important reason to put pen to paper. By sharing your words with the world, you can make a difference in someone else’s life. This is why I write.
When I set out to write my first book, From Pain to Parenthood, I had a goal in mind. I wanted to share my life’s experiences in order to encourage others. I had suffered two miscarriages and spent two years in the adoption process, so I knew what it felt like to lose a child and long to be a mother. I also knew that many people who were going through similar challenges could be helped by what I learned. And they were! After I published From Pain to Parenthood, I heard from readers who said I inspired them. They told me that my story gave them hope. It was an amazing feeling to be able to touch lives. I quickly realized that I must write more.
For my second book, I tried my hand at fiction and wrote Echoes of Paradise, which is a paranormal love story about the afterlife. The interesting thing about fiction is that you can still share important messages and inspire others with your story. It doesn’t have to be real to have an effect on someone’s life. Many fiction books are thought-provoking and life-changing, and they may include some of the author’s life experiences woven throughout. This is definitely the case with Echoes of Paradise. I had some interesting paranormal experiences that I believed others would find intriguing, so I took a few of them and transformed them into a story that many people can relate to. Again, I was able to inspire others.
I’m now working on my fourth book, another paranormal novel titled Sara’s Soul, and I really enjoy what I do! What I learned from writing books is that once you start, you just can’t stop. Words are powerful. They have to ability to enrich lives, teach lessons, entertain and, in some cases, can even spark a change in your career or life’s path. So when someone asks me: “Why write?” I really can’t think of a good reason why not.

Short Excerpt:

Celeste began sobbing uncontrollably. She struggled to see the road ahead of her through tear-filled eyes. The landscape became a fuzzy blur of moonlight and shadowy trees. The world around her spun into an unrecognizable mix of darkness streaked with occasional rays of dim light. As she drove blindly ahead, she felt as if she were plunging into nothingness. And she didn’t even care.
She would have continued in her oblivious state, but somehow, out of nowhere, she heard a very clear and distinct male voice pop into her head. She thought that surely she must have imagined it, because it sounded like Connor.
Pay attention.
Suddenly a deer darted out in front of her, its startled eyes aglow from the blazing gold headlights. Blood pulsed through her veins as she abruptly swerved her car to the right, narrowly missing the animal. With her heart still pounding, she took a deep breath and tried to regain her composure.
“That was close,” she said aloud to herself. “Stay focused, Celeste. Keep it together.”
Although she was alone in her car, she noticed a distinct presence. It felt like Connor was somehow with her. First the voice, and now this? Surely she must be losing her mind! Even so, she had an irresistible urge to talk to him. Maybe it was silly or useless, but she couldn’t fight this desire brimming inside of her. She didn’t just want communication with her deceased former love; she needed it—even if it was one-sided. She began to have a conversation as if he were right there with her.
“I’m so sorry,” she sobbed. “I’m sorry I didn’t stay in touch with you and try to be a part of your life in some way. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you or able to help you. I’m sorry for the night I left you. I’m sorry I didn’t let you get closer to me or tell you that I love you. I’m just so sorry.”
Tears streamed down Celeste’s face like the rain on a shiny glass window, and she gasped for air. What she wanted most right now was to know that Connor still existed somehow, somewhere. She wanted proof that his spirit lived on. She wanted to know that he was alive and well in heaven. Although she had been raised Christian, her faith had faded as she’d grown older. Life’s circumstances, unanswered prayers, and the cynical, materialistic world around her had left Celeste with doubts and questions. She now wondered if God and the afterlife even existed at all. She wanted to believe. She just didn’t know how.
Right after she spoke to Connor, a song came on the radio. The words caught her attention, and she stopped crying long enough to listen. It was a tune by Nickelback titled “Someday.”
For a brief moment, Celeste noticed a tingling sensation run down her spine. She felt like Connor was speaking directly to her through this song. It felt as if he were trying to respond to her. Were the words to this song meant for her? Did he somehow hear her cries? Was he trying to tell her he was going to help her in some way?
“No,” thought Celeste. “You’re being ridiculous. This is all just a coincidence. Connor can’t hear you or help you—he’s dead.”

Somehow, even though her rational, logical mind told her this, her heart told her otherwise. Maybe Connor really was alive in the afterlife. Maybe he really could hear her. She needed to know the truth. She wanted answers.

Interview and Giveaway: No Biz Like Showbiz by Julie Moffett

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I’ve written historical romances, time-travel romances and Scottish historicals. I started the “No” series in 2010 and have been having a blast with them ever since.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

NO BIZ LIKE SHOWBIZ is a geek’s perspective on a reality dating television show. I put my self-conscious but brilliant geek girl, Lexi Carmichael, behind the scenes on a Hollywood show called Geeks Get Some, to try and track down a hacker who is skewing the online voting. As soon as she catches the attention of the hacker and the game show contestants, it’s game on!

Are you a mom?

I’ve got two boys aged 7 and 18. I’m a single mom and they keep me very busy!!

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

Extremely difficult. The hardest part is finding quiet time to write when I’m not already brain dead.  J

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Every book has characters to have my qualities or those of people I know or have met. I always take from my own life experiences to enrich those of my fictional characters.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

It’s okay to laugh at yourself and with others.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

The CIA recruited me when I was in college studying the Russian language. I ended up as an international journalist instead.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I really have very little free time, but what free time I do have, I spend doing activities with the kids.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

More funny Lexi stories are coming up. NO TEST FOR THE WICKED is out Dec. 1 and NO WOMAN LEFT BEHIND is out Summer 2015.

Lexi Carmichael: Helping Geeks Everywhere Get Some

Okay, so it’s not exactly as it seems, but that’s what is happening on the dating reality television show called “Geeks Get Some” that I, Lexi Carmichael geek extraordinaire, am called to work on. Not that I’m a fan of reality shows (I can barely deal with my own reality), yet I’ve been sent to Hollywood to find a hacker who’s screwing with the results of the show’s online voting system.

So what happens when I get there? Well, the producers convince me to continue my investigation from the inside. What should be an easy hunt for the hacker turns ugly when he sets his sights on me. Add to that a studio obsessed with ratings, a bunch of nerdy contestants, and my own confusing love life, and unraveling this mystery might make me a star—or get me killed.

Excerpt:

No Biz Like Showbiz . . .

My name is Lexi Carmichael and I have a problem with most of today’s television programming. Not because of the sheer implausibility of a majority of the shows—although that does factor—but because too many programs seem to feature a tech genius who can solve the problems of the world with one stroke of a keyboard.
Here’s how it happens… a tech head is desperately trying to hack into a system. Death, the collapse of the free world, or the apocalypse is imminent if he fails. (Yes, tech heroes always seem to be guys since I guess in Hollywood a woman doesn’t know her way around a keyboard.) He types commands frantically as the clock ticks down to Doomsday. As the scenario continues, our frazzled hero takes a moment to run his fingers through his perfectly styled hair before he types just one more command and bingo, he’s in. He’ll then have a whole millisecond to navigate a completely unfamiliar system, find the magic switch, and shut down the entire system in time to save the day, world, girl, whatever, with one stroke. All of this while the super expensive, cutting-edge government system or expensive black-market technology used by the show's villain will aid our intrepid hero by providing helpful visual prompts like Access Denied or Access Granted in big bold letters across the screen as he works his hacking magic.
Just shoot me.
I’m a real hacker and yes, I’m female. I double-majored in mathematics and computer science at Georgetown University and have spent most of my twenty-five years learning how to bypass cryptographic protocols, exploit system vulnerabilities, and finesse distributed denial of service attacks. I’ve never had to avert an apocalypse, but if I did, I’m pretty sure it would take more than one freaking minute, and I wouldn’t be worried about my hair while doing it. My first successful hack on a relatively simple system took five hours. It might have taken four, but my mom kept distracting me by yelling through my bedroom door that if I gave ballet class just one more try she’d give me a hundred dollars to spend however I wanted. So, watching these types of shows and movies is hard on both my nerves and stomach.
