Beware Of Warlocks Box Set by Marilyn Vix

The Books That Almost Never Were

Everything this year is a triumph for me. Finishing the third book, Never Cross A Warlock, and completing the Beware of Warlocks Box Set that releases on Oct. 26 are some of my accomplishments. It’s extra sweet since I almost didn’t finish Never Cross A Warlock or create the box set, my final goal. In December 2014, I had a Code Blue and went into septic shock while hospitalized with acute pneumonia. I was sedated for a week while my body fought off the infection. Yup. Needles into the lungs to drain them too. Like I said, it was bad.

That’s when they discovered a large blood clot in my heart. I found out the hard way I have cardiomyopathy. It took 3 months to get rid of the blood clot, 5 months to walk without a walker or cane, and 2 months to get through my second phase of therapy.

I’ve been on medical leave from my day job all this time. I’ve been writing to keep my sanity. I wrote a New Adult Novel on Wattpad called Saving My Heart. I finished Never Cross A Warlock in March 2015, and even started writing erotic romantic shorts under a different pen name. Like I said, I’ve been busy writing. It has been my therapy as well.

The road has been long though. The first few months of 2015, I was using a walker to get my strength back to walk. Then, I graduated to a cane, and by summer, I was in the second phase of cardio therapy to start getting more mobile. I’ve been getting back to some normal routines like working at the Northern Renaissance Fair to help build my stamina for the day job. Playing the Gaelic harp and creating music is therapy too.

I took a sabbatical so I could get as much strength and health by continuing therapy and of course, so I can write. What can I write in a whole year? I’m not sure, but I feel like I’m off to a good start. And I’ve learned how precious second chances are. This is my second chance to go Full Monty on writing, and I’m going to take it. Nothing teaches you better to take the bull by the horns than almost being crushed by the bull. You get back on, and ride even harder, focusing on what you love.

I love writing. I’m so excited to be finally focusing on what I love to do, even if how I got here was a strange road. There is a quote from my favorite show in the 80s, Remington Steele. It’s one of the times we get to hear about Mr. Steele’s mysterious past. He talks about how he was working with a smuggler. The smuggler had saved so much for a new ship to smuggle items, and he threw a party the day they were bringing it into the harbor. It blew up in the bay as everyone watched. The smuggler laughed, full bellied, and Mr. Steele asked why he was laughing. The smuggler replied, “Just think of the possibilities.”

So, I’m thinking of the possibilities that this whole adventure with my health has put me on the path towards. Who knows what I’ll be able to write in a year. I’m so happy to be here to find it out. Just think of the possibilities. -Marilyn

Never Cross A Warlock:

Excerpt from beginning of Never Marry A Warlock:

My husband’s arms were wrapped around her naked body. The blankets were strewn and interwoven between their legs. He was spooning her with his biceps draped over her. I stood in the doorway taking in the scene of my husband and my best friend. It was the end of the world, at least for me. But I wasn’t going to take it lying down. I should have known better than to have married a warlock.

I hit him with a force spell that knocked him up against the headboard. He fell back down and braced his hands out to catch his fall. Cassandra scrambled out of the bed, dragging the silk comforter with her. Bitch. She better get out of my way. She was next.

Rich was naked as he sat up to look at me. Normally, the abs-flash trick would work. But not now. I was too pissed off. I knew what spells he used to look like that. It was easy to fool a mortal and ex-best friend on the floor. But not me. Thing is, we were too evenly matched. I think that was the problem.

He threw a counter spell that lanced light through my arm, digging into the flesh as it tried to anchor and link me to him. I flicked out a removal spell that broke the connection, laced my hands together, and hit him with a burst of everything I had. He went flying backward, through the window into the pool. It was satisfying to watch. He tried to rise up and hover toward me, but I knocked him back in the water with another force spell.

He yelled from the pool. His wavy, brown hair trenched with water. “Baby, we can talk it out. It’s just a moment of weakness. You’ve had them with mortals.”

I’d drown him if he couldn’t breathe water. Blowing up the six-million-dollar house probably wouldn’t kill him either. Like I said, never marry a warlock. I shot another burst of energy, creating a field that pushed him under. He swam back up and came to the side, with both chiseled arms on the edge of the pool. His brown eyes tried to melt my insides. I wasn’t going to let him win again.

I walked through the window ledge, broken glass crackling under my heels. “It’s over Rich. Just over. I’m done with playing the games, or sharing you with the next mortal you pick up. Really, when I said my vows, it was forsaking everyone. Including mortals.”

“I haven’t touched another witch in ages, Catherine. Really. Scout’s honor.”

I blasted him into the pool again. Rich came up from the bottom, laughing. He swam back to the side and got out. He walked toward me with glistening, rock-hard muscles. I fought down the attraction, along with the writhing anger. Maybe blowing him up was too good for him. Slow, painful death. Maybe.
