The Huntress by J. Risk

I’m quite often asked where I get my story ideas from – honestly I have no idea.  I may have a character suddenly come to mind and will take it from there, but what happens after that isn’t in my hands so to speak.

With The Huntress the opening was all I knew when I sat down and started writing.  A woman suddenly finding herself somewhere unfamiliar with no idea of she came to be there. Of course, Daxx handles it much better than I would.  I would probably freak out. J

I don’t know how my slightly confused character ended up turning into an alternate realm, or where the sexy “demons” that live there came from – but I am thrilled they did!  I loved writing my first NA genre novel and can’t wait to find out what happens with the rest of the Alterealm characters.

Other than a few plot conclusions no one is going to get any spoilers from me if they ask about the future books in this series.  So many possibilities and I have no clue where they’re going to take me.

I have the characters lined up and just have to decide who the next book is about.  For those that have read it, message me on twitter and tell me which one I should do for book 2 in the series – I can’t decide!

Chapter One

I didn’t even get both eyes opened and focused before I knew something was wrong.  Where was the color?  I was only seeing sepia? Everything was brown.  Blinking rapidly, I tried to readjust my eyes to see if there was any other hue.  It didn’t change a thing and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why.
Sitting there, I tried to decipher what was going on and why I was sitting on the ground.  Looking down I ran my hand over the dried dusty surface.  Why was I on the ground? Craning my neck as far as I could in all directions, I looked around.  Okay, where was the pavement and cement? The buildings and streets I called my natural turf?
The why’s flying around in my brain suddenly decided the top question, was what the hell was going on?
Squeezing my eyes shut, I struggled to recall the last thing I remembered doing.  I was hunting down a bounty—a nice one with a large dollar sign attached to her.  I had tracked her ass down and…
I confronted her? Yes, I was minutes away from calling Frank and telling him to get out his shiny pen and sign my check.
So what happened between then and now?  Not to sound repetitive, which is something that drives me nuts, but what the hell was going on?
Startled, I started to check for bullet holes or the deep crevices that knives leave behind in flesh.  That had to be it, I’d taken a beating and this was that in between place you sit when you’re near death’s door, but not quite ready to see what lies on the other side.
Finding no critical injury, I slumped forward and rubbed my head.  There was some rational explanation for this, there had to be.  Had I been drugged?  It could be some crazy hallucination.  Any minute now I was going to either wake up in my bed at home or some hospital with a cheery nurse leaning over me, reassuring me we are going to be just fine.  I only had to wait it out a little longer and all would be normal.
To kill time until I woke up, I looked around some more. Wherever this was it looked like a burnt out world.  Not the charred kind of burn, but depleted and completely used up sort.
Vacant.
Sitting still wasn’t really a strong trait of mine, so I figured I’d get up and take a look around, there had to be something to see around here.  If my body was actually somewhere else for safekeeping, what harm could come to me, right?
I staggered like I’d never stood before, struggling to get my balance.  Whatever was going on with me, my equilibrium was totally shot.  Standing there swaying like grass in the breeze, I turned carefully trying to see if there was anything around me except rust tinted dirt and nothingness.
My heart stumbled around in my chest when I spotted someone coming in my direction.  Yes! I wasn’t the only one in this soulless place.
The closer it got to me made me the more I questioned my original conclusion.  I didn’t know, exactly, but it was not someone it was a something.  No one label could describe it.  Standing over six feet, it had the shape of a man dressed in jeans and a large, very out of fashion gingham snap up shirt.  When I reached the face, I can only describe it as part wrinkle puppy dog with floppy skin crossed with Freddy and Jason after the slash scenes.
It stopped in front of me and instinct had me reach around behind me under my jean jacket for my raptor claw knife, which I put on as regular as underwear when dressing; and that would be everyday, by the way.  Relief washed over me when I felt the small circular handle. At least while waiting to survive I got to bring my toys with me.
Big brown eyes assessed me slowly and I wanted to make the call that it was harmless, but yeah, having tracked down anything from a sicko killer to a card shark in the last three years, I knew better than to fall for sappy looks.
“Are you a magishian?  You juisht appeared.”
A male voice, even though he spoke with a heavy lisp that randomly inserted ish into his words.  Then again if I had saggy lips like he did, I’d be happy to talk at all.  I sized him up for a few more seconds, trying to gauge whether he was really in front of me, or if I was having some sort of psychotic episode.  Was a magician good or bad?  I decided the play dumb, being blonde did have some advantages.  “A magician?”
Those brown eyes developed a nervous quiver.  Magician equaled bad.  “No…”
He looked relieved.  “Oh good.  I didn’t want to have to bash you over the head.”
I grasped my raptor tightly and shrugged.  “Yeah, me either.”
The sky brightened and began to glow a rust orange color.  When I asked for some color, I’d hoped for something out of the orange family.
“We better go, they’ll be coming soon.”
“They?”  I glanced around quickly, not wanting to take my eyes off him for long.
He nodded and pranced on the spot, the nervous movement had me on high alert.  “The daywalkers.” He whispered.
Daywalkers?  Did I even want to know?  I didn’t think so, but this bizarre nightmare wasn’t going to be complete if I didn’t ask.
Looking me over a few times, his eyes widened under the pressure of his drooping forehead; that was quite the expression.  “You’re not one of them are you?”
I walked in the day, night and even at dusk, but I wasn’t going to tell him that.  I decided honesty might work, if not violence was always a good backup.  Judging by his expression daywalker ranked on the bad list with magician.  “I—I don’t know what you’d call me.”
Those sappy eyes looked me up and down a few times trying to figure me out.  “You better come with me. It’s not safe to leave you wandering around.”  He looked behind him and then motioned behind me and started walking.
I knew in my gut it was a mistake, but as I had no other real options… I didn’t know where I was or what was going on and so far he knew more than I did.  “Where are we going?”
Pausing he glanced over his shoulder and then lumbered along again.  “I’ll take you to Troy, he’ll know what to do.”
My eyes were starting to strain as the sky brightened. “This Troy, he’s in charge?”
He stopped so suddenly I almost ploughed right into his back.  When he turned and looked at me, his eyes weren’t a sad brown any more but were leaning more towards red.  It had to be from the strange color of the sunrise.  “You’re not from Alterealm are you?”
“Is that where we are?”
He nodded.
“Nope.”
That nervous jitter of his seemed to return all at one.  “How did you get here?”
A reasonable question that I had nothing to offer that resembled an answer.  “I don’t know that either.”
His red eyes darted to the sky.  “We have to go.”
Turning, he began jogging toward, well, nothing that I could see. Not wanting to find out what he was afraid of, I ran along behind him.  All I could think was this Troy person, if he was a person, better have some answers.
He stopped again and dropped down onto his knees.  Was he hurt?  Surely that short jaunt hadn’t winded him that much.  He began tapping his hand on the ground.  What was he doing?  Looking all around us, I kept watch for anything really, not wanting to meet these daywalkers in the slightest.  Just when I’d had about enough of his short break, he grasped something in the sand and pulled a door in the ground open.
“We’re going to have to use the shortcut. We don’t have time to get to the main gates.”
Looking down into a hole with a ladder, I glanced around again and despite every muscle in my body telling me to run and get the hell out of here, I started down the metal rungs into a deep hole that would take me, hopefully back to friggin’ reality.

About the Author:

I wanted to write a story that would fit into young adult, new adult and adult levels. Something that was serious with fun paranormal and afntasy elements that everyone could read and enjoy.

I've even decided to use J. Risk as the pen name for this to separate  this series from my other writing which is definitely adult reading  material.

Interview and Giveaway-Tour Blitz: Haunt My Heart by Lisa Medley

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I write under my own name. I’ve always enjoyed reading about monsters in love and now I write about them.

I adore beasties of all sorts, fictional as well as real, and I have a farm full of them in my Southwest Missouri home including: one child, one husband, two dogs, two cats, a dozen hens, thousands of Italian bees, and a guinea pig.

I may or may not keep a complete zombie apocalypse bug-out bag in my trunk at all times, including a machete. Just. In. Case.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Haunt My Heart is a ghost romance. The hero is a Civil War officer who was a member of a secret organization called the Brothers of Peril. After he’s hexed and trapped in a ring, he’s doomed to an eternity of darkness until a reluctant ghost hunter finds the ring 150 years later and takes home much more than a souvenir.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

This story idea germinated from the first real-life ghost hunt I participated in a couple of years ago. My husband was reluctant about the idea of me going ghost hunting. He worried, “What if something follows you home?” Of course, that only made me start asking, “What if it did?!” I went on the ghost hunt and came home with a story.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. I heart those books hard. I love the dark heroes. Monsters need love too.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Kylen, a reaper possessed by a demon for more than a hundred years, is the hero of Reap & Redeem, book two of my Reaping series. Shhhh…he’s my favorite :D

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

Haunt My Heart is a stand-alone paranormal romance. I don’t foresee any more books coming out of this story, however, the idea of the Brothers of Peril picking back up is intriguing…and possible.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

I’ve been plotstorming for the fourth book in my Reaping series. I’ve started a bit already because the characters couldn’t wait for me to make a plan. They just started talking! I’ll write my synopsis then jump into Reap & Reckon with both feet in January. I plan to finish that novel before July 4th.

What book are you reading now?

I’m reading an ARC of Not Quite Darcy by Terri Meeker. It’s a hoot!

What is in your to read pile?

Gah, EVERYTHING! The thing about actively writing is that I only have one brain. I’m quite a good multi-tasker but I still haven’t managed to figure out how to READ and WRITE at the same time, ha! On my nightstand now are Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs and The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I’m also really looking forward to Cara Bristol’s next sci-fi/fantasy romance The Goddess’s Curse. Don’t even get me started about my Kindle reads.

A Civil War soldier dies to save his men. Can he find true love to live again?

Sarah Knight has a job she’s good at, a quirky BFF, and a boyfriend who’s bad for her. When Sarah unearths a Civil War artifact on a ghost hunt at Chatham Manor, she brings home more than a souvenir.

Lieutenant James “Tanner” Dawson fought for the Union, working as a supernatural liaison for his Major General in a secret Masonic offset called the Brothers of Peril. When he’s hexed by a witch, he learns the only way to save his men is to die himself. But death is not the end. Awakening 150 years later, he knows if he wants to be corporeal again, he has to find true love to break the hex—a task no easier in 21st century than it was in the 19th.

Excerpt: Chapter One
“Hurry up, Sarah. We’re going to miss the ghost!”
Sarah Knight rolled her eyes in the cold December darkness, but trotted after Ellie’s bouncing flashlight beam. Sarah’s heels crunched through the frozen topsoil as she crossed the lawn, and she worried about the damage being done to her only pair of sensible work shoes. Ellie had failed to mention this would be on an outdoor excursion.
Ellie had been dragging her out on girls’ nights against her better judgment since they graduated from college. Last month, they’d gone to a mixed martial arts fight, complete with blood, screaming and more than one missing tooth. And that had been the spectators.
It was only in the car on the way over that Sarah had learned tonight’s adventure would be a ghost hunt. Ellie had a strange idea of fun.
Sarah and Ellie caught up to the tour group as the leader, a tall dark-haired man in his mid-forties, wrapped up his ghost-hunting protocol explanation. She’d missed the rules. Ellie wouldn’t care about missing that part. She hated following the rules, but Sarah was a little miffed. If she was going ghost hunting, she wanted to know exactly what the boundaries were.
“Great,” Sarah whispered. “We missed the rules.”
“At least we didn’t miss the ghost,” Ellie pointed out. “And they haven’t doled out the equipment yet.” Ellie’s mouth split into a mischievous smile, and she angled up closer to the group leader.
“Again, my name is Allen, if you have any questions during the tour. Since we have such a large group tonight, we’ll split into two teams. Carla will take this half.” Allen sliced an imaginary line through the group of twenty or so ghost-hunters. “And the rest of you will go with me.”
Relieved she and Ellie were on the same side of the line, Sarah snuggled up closer to her friend and surveyed the rest of their team. A middle-aged couple, a grandmotherly woman, and a group of ten sorority girls—exactly the type of girls she’d avoided in college—made up Team Allen. The girls sported matching Greek-lettered sweatshirts, scarves and mittens and tittered incessantly. Sarah was fairly sure their chance of seeing a ghost with this group was nil. Fine with her. Ellie was the one who went for the paranormal stuff.
“We’ll walk the path where the Lady in White has typically been spotted. Carla’s team will cover the grounds around the house,” Allen said. He nodded to Carla, and she gave him a little salute, then led her team around to the side of the building. Allen’s group stayed put in the doorway.
“First, I’ll need a couple of volunteers,” Allen announced.
Ellie’s hand shot up before Sarah could register what was happening. “We’ll do it.”
Classic Ellie, leaping before she looked. She didn’t even know what she was volunteering for. It could be anything. If Allen wanted virgins to sacrifice, however, he was out of luck.
Allen pulled two little handheld meter devices out of his messenger bag. His brows lowered a bit as he studied Ellie, cast his eyes around the group, then settled back to her. Ellie’s enthusiasm won out and Allen handed one device to her and the other to Sarah.
“This is the Anomaly Detector,” Allen said with all the reverence of presenting the sword Excalibur. “It measures EMP and temperature. If these lights change, it’s your job to let us know. I’ll be taking photos and interacting with the ghost, trying to draw her out. I can’t keep my eyes on all of the devices at once. Can you manage this?”
“Absolutely,” Ellie squealed.
Sarah resisted rolling her eyes again. She accepted the detector and did her best to reduce her scowl.
“It’s okay to be skeptical,” Allen said. “It makes it all the more exciting when we convert you to a believer.” His smile warmed and Sarah realized he was actually handsome. Old, but handsome. What an otherwise normal and attractive man—who was way old enough to know better—was doing leading a bunch of ghost hunters, she had no idea. People were strange. She supposed she’d have to include herself in that judgment, considering she now held a ghost detector.

Blood Prophecy: Queen’s Destiny by Barb Jones

Some authors write following an outline while there are those that don’t.  The ones that don’t are called “pantsters”.  I know, it’s a funny word for something that seems to be so creative.  I happen to be one of those “pantsters”.  I don’t know why, but if I am not writing a paper for something like school, I can’t follow an outline.  In my college days, I would outline the subject in complete detail for a thesis paper or something to that effect.  Queen’s Destiny, the first book of The Blood Prophecy series is an example of me being a “pantster”.

What really is a pantster? A pantster is someone who “writes by the seat of their pants” per se.  A writer, or author, if you will, who just lets creativity take them on an imaginable journey from the beginning of the novel to the end.  Well, that is me!  True and true.  When I started Queen’s Destiny, it started from a dream that I had and it just continued.  As I was writing, I noticed that my tone in the novel was becoming more and more of a bloody, romantic and suggestive content.  I was careful to not let my novel take me in one direction more than another.  So, again, I let my creative juices flow!

By the time Queen’s Destiny was nearing the end, I really had no idea how it would end or what would happen to the characters that I began to love and admire.  What I envision for the book and the series may not be what others would like to see.  That is the most frustrating part for me.  The second book, Queen’s Enemy is coming to an end and as a pantster, I have no idea of how it will end.  In my mind, I already have four very different endings, possibly a fifth.  I’m even starting a Street Team to see what my fans’ thoughts are.  I find it very interesting to read an email from a fan that told me how much she loved the book but was unhappy that Amber, the Queen, became a vampire.  She was hoping for a witch!  But overall, these are the things that I find interesting when it comes to different perceptions and all.

My creativity is part of why I relate to the word “pantster” more than the type of author who needs to outline everything.  My imagination runs wild and sometimes gets the best of me!  As a rule of thumb, my process of writing will require some music, maybe the TV on, or other noise in the background.  I just need to hear things in the background while I write.  No headphones or anything.  Just the regular noise of the house – kids running around playing, TV, you name it.  While I hear the “noise” – the pantster keeps writing!

Queen’s Destiny was written to a variety of noise, but one thing remained true.  While writing, I usually took a break to call one of my many friends in Seattle each night.  I’m from Seattle and I needed a little bit of “home” while writing.  The rest, my friends, is me just being a pantster!  I don’t know how one book will end, how the next one will begin or what will happen to

Release Day Blitz Watch Me Burn by Sharon Bayliss

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.
I write family dramas that are infused with magic! Yes, even grown-ups with kids can learn that they are a wizard.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.
Watch Me Burn is book 2 in The December People Series. The Vandergraffs, a family of winter wizards, intersects with a family of summer wizards, their natural enemies.

Are you a mom (or parent)?  Yep! I have two boys, 2 and 4.

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting? Definitely. I am fortunate to have time to write while my boys are at preschool.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life? No, my characters aren’t inspired by anyone in particular. However, the characters and setting are similar to my own life in a very general way.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?
Love and family can overcome darkness and adversity.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a Slytherin! :D
When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?
I enjoy gardening, yoga, and jogging. As for guilty pleasures, I’d definitely say television. It’s a great way to turn my brain off after a busy day.
Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?
Vicious by V.E. Schwab. It’s very similar to my own style and made me think I should have written it!
Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?
I sometimes wish I wrote romance because there is such a huge market for it. I don’t think it’s what I’m meant to write though.
Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?
Emmy Vandergraff. She’s brave and heroic, but is also a trouble maker! She constantly creates conflict and drives the plot.
If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?
I’m keeping mum about a lot of the details. But will say that book 3 is the spring book and book 4 is the fall book.
What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?
Book 3 and 4 are both in progress!
What book are you reading now?
Several books, but the most notable is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
What is in your to read pile?

What isn’t in my to-read pile? ;)

Watch Me Burn

Book Two
Sharon Bayliss

Genre: Contemporary Fantasy

Publisher: Curiosity Quills Press

Date of Publication: 1/5/15

ISBN:
ASIN:

Number of pages: 250
Word Count: 75,000
Cover Artist: Michelle Johnson

Book Description:

David Vandergraff lost his home, his job, and contact with his oldest son, but remains determined to be a good husband and father despite being a dark winter wizard.

His resolve is tested when a flyer for a missing girl--who happens to be a summer witch--begins to haunt him. David believes a spell needs to use him to save her, so he follows the magic's command and looks into her disappearance. His teenage daughter Emmy resents him for caring so much about a random stranger. But when she uncovers some disturbing evidence close to home, she begins an investigation of her own.

David and Emmy quickly learn that the mystery is not only about a missing girl they barely know, but a deeply personal story that impacts everyone they care about. As their world crumbles, they fear the warning may be true—never mess with summer wizards, because the good guys always win.

Excerpt:
David Vandergraff could smell magic in the air, as clearly as he could smell the motor oil and burned coffee. When the news report began, the volume on the television became much louder, and the screen glowed as if demons would claw their way out at any minute. However, none of the other patrons in the waiting room of the mechanic's shop noticed anything different. They continued staring at their phones, looking pale and sick in the fluorescent light and excessive air conditioning. Before David had known he was a wizard, he dismissed such oddities as "just one of those things you can't explain". But now, he knew better.
The image of the missing girl on the screen shined so intensely, he could see her outline burned into the blackness behind his eyelids when he blinked. The girl posed in her volleyball uniform, displaying a radiant white-toothed smile. She looked about fourteen or fifteen. She had blonde hair and golden skin and a strange radiating quality, as if the pixels in the television gave her an extra glow.
David shook his head. Since he had learned he was a wizard, anytime he noticed anything strange, from bad weather to a headache, he feared magic was involved. His daughter Emmy was blonde, around the girl's same age, and played volleyball. So, the missing girl reminded him of Emmy—and of course, that would upset him. Besides, his heart always raced when he saw a missing child. Two of his own children had been missing for a long time. And even though they were now safe at home, he didn't think the fear and grief would ever leave him.
He tried to turn his attention back to scanning job listings on his tablet, but he couldn't focus his eyes on anything except the television report and all the other sounds turned into a whirring buzz.
