Interview and Giveaway with Alexis D. Craig

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I’m Alexis D Craig on paper (and according to my parents), but Lexie in my regular life, and I write romance. There’s something about falling in love that I find magical, and I enjoy writing about it.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

The Ex File is a hot romantic suspense liberally dipped in comedy. Two old friends reconnect, and not everyone is as pleased about it as they are. The consequences of being happy can be varied and violent, as Sean and Ellie find out. Sometimes, when the past comes knocking, it’s best to just lock the door and hide.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Definitely. I love bringing people into my life into my little microcosms. I never do it without permission, but I do have fun with that aspect of my writing. Josh and Dane in The Ex File have foundations in very real people in my life.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I am a bona fide Hello Kitty addict, to the point where I have Boba Fett Hello Kitty tattooed on my ankle.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I love ghost hunting, and I am a crafting fiend. I have as many hobbies as I do digits, and I take as much joy in those as I do writing. I love to bead, paint, draw occasionally, and take great pride in my Craftastic Pinterest board. So far everything I’ve done from there has been rock awesome. I also love to ride my bike along the Canal in downtown Indy. The view is wonderful and I’m determined to do 20 miles in a stretch and befriend the ducks. So far, the ducks do not appreciate my efforts.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

The Ex File is Book 1 in my Behind the Blue Line series. Sean, Ellie, and their friends were so much fun to write, that I didn’t feel like stopping at just one. Book 2, coming May 23rd, 2015, is titled Dead and Disorderly and focusses on Nico Verrazzano, a detective friend of Sean’s you meet in their story, and the tiny little hurricane with the turquoise streaked hair, Nahia Wellington. She’s nothing like any other woman he’d ever encountered and quickly becomes everything he’d ever want.

Put together by her meddlesome best friend (and Nico’s partner), Nigel, Nahia’s suspicious of the immediate spark between them. She’s not one for love at first sight, but she also knows better than to ignore the Universe when it takes out a billboard to get her attention.
Together they are drawn into a case involving a haunted house with a tragic past that hits closer to home than either one of them expect.

It’s all fun and games until the walls start bleeding.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

Dead and Disorderly, Book Two in the Behind the Blue Line Series is due out May 23rd, and a separate romantic suspense standalone entitled Bulletproof Princess is due out August 8th. I also have a RomCom I just finished called No Such Thing, but I don’t have a release date for that as of yet.

Sean and Ellie’s relationship is put to the test but will they fare well while they go rummaging through The Ex File?

Excerpt 2:

Tempting fate, he cupped her cheek, heartened when she didn’t turn away from him. “I may be a lot of things,” he started, “but I’m not that kind of bastard. That much I can promise.”
“But you didn’t call.” Her voice was small, full of confusion and accusation even as she hooked her fingers through his belt loops.
Sean rested his forehead against hers, feeling the heat of her whiskey breath against his lips. “You said you were going to call me right before you ran out the door the other morning.” He hoped that by showing the parity of their situations, it would make her feel better.
“I didn’t run.” Ellie tilted her head back to look him in the eye, “I walked, with dignity and great haste.” She held a straight face for only a moment before breaking into a quiet chuckle.
He could feel himself grinning like an idiot. He nuzzled his nose against hers. “Fine, you left with great haste.”
She turned her face away and mumbled something that sounded like, “I didn’t know what else to do.”
“Eleanor,” he purred as he placed a finger under chin and turned her face to his. She looked… scared? Ashamed? It was several shades of emotion at once, and he wanted nothing more than to hug her as tight as he could to make them go away. “El. You know what I did last week?” She shook her head. He licked his lips and laughed slightly. “I arrested a couple hookers, did some buys. Hung out with Guinness. Went a little nuts on eBay for a couple antique swords. It’s an exciting life I lead, huh?”
Ellie’s eyes fell from his to his lips, finally landing on his chest. “I’m sorry for doubting you.”
Sean threaded his fingers through her hair as he pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. “No, don’t apologize. We’re both kinda new at this.” When she looked back up at him, she looked like she was about to cry. That wouldn’t do at all. He brushed his lips across hers, pleased to see the surprise in her eyes. “We’ll work it out.”
She reached up and tucked his bangs behind his ear, her fingertips igniting little sparks against his skin as she trailed them down his neck to his shoulder. “I’m sure we will.” When she arched up into him as she kissed him, he knew the heaven he’d experienced the other night hadn’t been imagined. Her fingers wound in his hair, the way her breath caught when he bit her neck, her leg hooked around his, damn, he hadn’t realized how much he’d missed this.
The knock at the door broke them apart for only a second. She looked at the door, and the clock on the stove, before pulling him tight against her again. “Wrong house. They’ll figure it out.”
That was all the permission to continue he needed, grabbing her by the waist and lifting her onto the counter. Stepping between her legs, he dropped his hand to her knee, moving it slowly up her thigh and dragged her dress with it. Ellie tugged at the collar and sleeves of his button down shirt, until he stopped only long enough to toss it into the living room over the half-wall.
He framed her face in his hands and peppered her lips with tiny kisses and nibbles as she wrapped her legs around his waist and pressed herself as close to him as she could be while still dressed.

The banging on the front door recommenced, this time with the familiar timber of a cop on a mission. “Eleanor Gardner. Open the door now or I’m coming in there.”

About the Author:

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

Top Ten List of World Class Heroines with Christian A. Brown

Top Ten List of World Class Heroines (In Literature/ Entertainment)

Those of you who don’t know me—which is probably a rather large amount of folks at the moment—don’t know that I have an aversion to weak female leads. I like women who stand up to adversity, who are quick on their feet, and who are positive role models. I could go on forever about all the Mary Sues in our media, but I believe in putting positive energy out into the world, so here’s a list of some of my favorite female role models in popular culture. (Note: no offence to any actual persons named Mary, or Sue, we’re talking about the meme J)

10. Lady Gaga. Let’s just get all the pop stars out of the way in one lump sum. With the current trends in music, such as J Lo and Nicki’s travesty of a video that set women’s rights back about a decade, the pickings are slim. What was that horrid thing--that can never be unseen—even called? Jiggelz? Arse-pudding? I struggle to recall anything beyond undulating flesh. Anyhoo, I’ll put Lady Gaga on the list since she’s brave enough to wear suits of pastrami and challenges social issues—even if she’s bat-you-know-what bonkers. Honorable mentions for this position go to Tegan and Sara, and Brandi Carlile, for keeping it both soulful AND classy.

9. Sailor Uranus: Gender-bending, sporty and tough! In the Japanese version, she’s written as a lesbian. Which is potentially misogynistic for the presumption that she must be a lesbian to like “manly” pursuits like driving and sports, as well as embracing of diversity for being an openly gay character.

8. Elsa, princess of Arendelle. She chooses family over love and learns how to harness a devastating power within herself. Not too shabby for a Disney Princess.

7. Regina, Evil Queen/ reformed villain. I have a soft spot for characters that evolve into their heroism. In Regina’s case, the love of her child—not even one of her own blood—transformed her into a person that does the right thing. Most of the time. She WAS an Evil Queen, after all. I doubt her edge will ever be dulled.

6. Daenerys Targaryen. She grows from a sold-off-woman into a powerful queen. Her ruthlessness, come certain points, isn’t admirable, so she only lands at #6.

5. Pam, vampire sass-queen of True Blood. I definitely admire the life that Kristen Bauer gave the character in the transition from book to screen. At times her acerbity can wear one’s patience a little thin, but in the last few seasons of the show (as the quality of the script nosedived, in my opinion) her characterization flourished. We saw that Pam had a human heart under all that cynicism. And damn, did she ever have all the good lines!

4. Lady Mary. I think most of Lady Mary’s appeal can be attributed to the actress that plays her, Michelle Dockery. Otherwise an opinionated, scandalous aristocrat could come off as entirely alien and cold. But there’s a warmth to Lady Mary, and a great deal of growth, too, that she experiences after the birth of her child and the loss of her husband. I think that growth is essential to heroism. The capacity for change. Lady Mary demonstrates that in spades with her impressive character arc.

3. Hermione Granger. Smart, humble, pretty—but not vain. Also worth noting is that Emma began the #HeForShe campaign, which is brilliant. Men need to engage themselves in fighting sexism.

2. Xena Warrior Princess. She’s kicked every arse that needs kicking and then some. She’s plain awesome.

1. Morigan Lostarot. Omg—he didn’t! I did. I plugged my own novel. But hear me out as to why she’s so great. Like many heroines, she has a rather unsavory fate thrust upon her, and while she has moments of weakness, she never truly pines or whines. She keeps moving ahead; challenging fate, challenging a demented and dark King. She even finds epic love. Not that she needs a man’s devotion to fulfill herself, only to compliment her. She is independent, resourceful, and has a blend of courage and cautious wisdom. I’m interested to hear what you think about Morigan and the other heroines in Feast of Fates. There are several heroines, and some rather menacing women, too. I promise to surprise and delight you with each.

Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts today!

All the best,

-C

About the Author:

Christian A. Brown has written creatively since the age of six. After spending most of his career in the health and fitness industry, Brown quit his job to care for his mother when she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2010.

Having dabbled with the novel that would eventually become Feast of Fates for over a decade, Brown was finally able to finish the project. He is proud to now share the finished product with the world.

The Cocktail Story of One More Second Chance Plus a Giveaway

The Cocktail Story of One More Second Chance

Everybody’s got a story, and some people have cocktail story, a drink that speaks to them and speaks about them. I’ve decided that the characters of my book, ONE MORE SECOND CHANCE, deserve cocktails that tell their story.

This book takes place in a small town in Maine called Lobster Cove. It’s the town where Julia Stewart was born and raised. Alex Campbell takes a temporary position as a doctor in Lobster Cove. So what better cocktail for these two then one called “Lobsters on South Beach”? Okay, I know we’re in Maine, not in Florida. But it’s the perfect cocktail for this setting.

Lobsters on South Beach

Crushed ice
1 measure white rum
1 measure coconut rum
1 measure mango purée
2 measures mandarin juice (fresh if possible)
1 measure coconut cream
4 pineapple chunks
Mango slices, to decorate

Put some crushed ice with the rums, mango purée, mandarin juice, coconut cream, and pineapple chunks into a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Serve in a large highball glass and decorate with mango slices.

The attraction between them becomes too much to resist. They make love, even though Julia is afraid to get too close because she knows Alex will be leaving soon and she’s afraid of being hurt again.

Night of Passion

6-8 ice cubes
2 measures gin
1 measure Cointreau
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
2 measures peach nectar
2 tablespoons passion fruit juice

Put half of the ice cubes into a cocktail shaker with the gin, Cointreau, lemon juice, peach nectar, and passion fruit juice and shake well. Strain over the remaining ice into an old-fashioned glass.

Alex adores Julia. She’s his American Beauty.

American Beauty

4-5 ice cubes
1 measure brandy
1 measure dry vermouth
1 measure orange juice
1 measure grenadine
1 dash crème de menthe
2-3 dashes ruby port
Maraschino cherry, to decorate
Orange slice, to decorate
Mint sprig to decorate

Put the ice cubes into a cocktail shaker. Pour in the brandy, vermouth, orange juice, grenadine, and crème de menthe and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass. Tilt the glass and gently pour in a little ruby port so that it floats on top. Decorate with a maraschino cherry, an orange slice, and a mint sprig impaled on a toothpick.

Julia loves Alex, but he’s only in Lobster Cove temporarily. If she asks him to stay, will he eventually regret his decision? Will he always be dreaming of his home in California?

California Dreaming

Ice cubes
2 dashes kirsch
3 measures pineapple juice
1 dash lemon juice
Chilled Champagne, to top up
Pineapple wedge, to decorate

Put some ice cubes into a food processor or blender with the kirsch and fruit juices and blend for 30 seconds. Pour into a wine glass and top up with chilled Champagne. Decorate with a pineapple wedge.

All these recipes are from “501 Must-Drink Cocktails.” Thanks for reading my cocktail story. Cheers!

Excerpt:
“What did the x-ray find?” she asked.
“A spiral fracture of the right arm.” He paused for a moment and took a deep breath as if trying to control his emotions. “I’ve seen this kind of injury before. A fracture like this can be the result of a fall, but it can also be an indication of child abuse. An arm as small as Ava’s will break like a twig if it’s twisted hard enough. I’m obligated to contact the authorities if I suspect abuse.”
Julia stared at him in mute shock, her brain struggling to process his words, as if trying to translate some unintelligible language. The words child abuse rang in her ears. Finally she found her voice.
“You think someone deliberately hurt her?”
“Her injuries are consistent with abuse.”
“I don’t give a damn what they’re consistent with. Ava has not been mistreated. My mother said she fell down the stairs, and if that’s what she said, then that’s what happened.”
“I believe there’s more to the story than a simple fall.”
“If it comes down to believing you or believing my mother, I’m going with my mother.”
“Perhaps you don’t know your mother as well as you think you do.”
Julia sucked in a breath and stared into Dr. Campbell’s dark, accusing eyes. The idea that her mother would hurt Ava was ridiculous. She adored Ava, would do anything for her…
She blinked and looked away, remembering an incident the other day. She’d heard her yelling at Ava about the milk she’d spilled on the kitchen floor, making such a huge deal of it that Ava had cried. It had struck her as strange, since she couldn’t remember her mother yelling at anyone, ever. She wasn’t as patient as she used to be. And how did she explain her strange phone call telling her Ava had been hurt? Of course she’d been upset, but her mother had been nearly incoherent with distress. Was something going on she wasn’t aware of? She was seventy-one now. Maybe looking after a rambunctious five-year-old was too much for her.
No. She shook her head to reject the disloyal thought. Dr. Campbell was the one who was wrong.
“I know my mother. She didn’t do this. It was an accident.”
“We’ll soon find out. Sharon is questioning Ava now.”
Julia stared at the door. “She’ll be scared, all by herself.”
“Sharon’s very good at what she does. She has a way of making kids feel comfortable.”
Julia turned on him, the anger and despair she’d been holding inside spilling out. “And you? Do you enjoy upsetting five-year-olds and turning families’ lives upside down? Does it make you feel powerful to sic the authorities on us?”
“Look, Mrs. Stewart, I take no pleasure in bringing in the authorities. But I’ve seen child abuse, up close and personal, and I can tell you it’s damn ugly. The things parents and caregivers are capable of doing to defenseless children…”
He stopped abruptly, his chest heaving. Closing his eyes, he averted his face and took a deep breath. When he turned back to her, his steely control was back in place. “So yeah, if I have even the smallest suspicion that a child has been abused, I’m going to ask questions. And I’m not going to apologize for it.”

About the Author:

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel.

Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.

In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada with their Pug/Terrier cross Lou and several unnamed goldfish.

She loves to hear from readers and can be reached through her website at www.janarichards.com
