Interview and Giveaway with Angela Dennis

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

First off, thank you so much for having me! I’m really excited to be here. My name is Angela Dennis, and I write both Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Urban Fantasy wise, I’m writing the Shadow Born Series, which is published by Samhain Publishing. I am also starting a new series in the fall with Samhain called Soul’s Harbor Pride, which is a set of sexy paranormal romances about lion shifters.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Piercing the Darkness is a tie-in novella to the Shadow Born series. It stands completely on its own, so there’s no need to read the other two books first. It tells the story of Hilda, a character I absolutely adore. This book has a lot more romance than the other two books. It’s a story of two star-crossed lovers, with a love so strong, it conquers even death.

Are you a mom?

I am. I have a little boy who is almost three years old. He is definitely one of the biggest blessings in my life. I adore him.

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

It can be tough. My son has special needs, so we have a lot of doctor’s appointments, therapy appointments, etc. So a lot of times, I’m running on empty. But that’s okay. Both writing and parenting are incredibly rewarding, so you keep pushing forward.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Not intentionally. But I think that life experience plays a big role in the stories I create, so there are probably glimpses of people I’ve come across in each of my characters.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

The Shadow Born Series has an underlying message of redemption and forgiveness. That it’s never too late to be a better person, and make amends for your past. A lot of my characters have hit rock bottom, and are trying to rebuild their lives. There are some other messages scattered throughout the books, but that’s the one I hope people really take to heart.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

Hobbies… I love music. I’ve been playing the piano and a few other instruments since I was small. My husband is also a musician, so there is always music in our home, which I love. I also love to horseback ride, although I rarely find the time these days.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

Right now I’m playing around with an idea for a contemporary romance series with zero paranormal elements. It’s a stretch for me, but I’m really enjoying writing it.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

Dance with the Devil, the first book in my Soul’s Harbor Pride series will release this fall. I’m really excited about it. It’s a complete shift from the Shadow Born Series. And it’s a lot sexier. I like to mix things up a bit.

Excerpt:

Everything hurt, even her teeth. Hilda eased to her hands and knees, spitting dirt from her mouth. She had no idea how much time had passed, and she didn’t really care. All she wanted to know was where the hell she was.

She tried to stand, but pain brought her back to her knees on the damp ground. Rubbing at her burning eyes, she shook her head. Her vision was blurry at best, and all she could see for miles was dirt and darkness. The air was thick with humidity and stank of wood smoke, burning her lungs each time she inhaled.

Wait. She was breathing. Ghosts didn’t breathe. And they didn’t hurt.

Her legs gave out and she collapsed onto the ground. She ran her fingers through the soggy earth at her side, realizing she could feel it. Fighting back her growing alarm, she brushed her fingertips across her face. She could feel that too, and it felt solid.

Holy shit, she still had a body. She had no idea how that was possible, but she was going with it. This time when she stood, she was prepared for the instant pain and weakness, so she managed to stay on her feet. She spun around, searching for something, anything, other than the endless darkness.

She definitely was not still on the Earthly plane. This place felt different. The air was gritty, felt dirty against her skin. And something about it seemed…wrong.

As her eyes adjusted, she realized there were globe-like fixtures scattered beneath the ground. They shimmered with pale blue light that barely penetrated the dense atmosphere.
But it was bright enough she could make out the outline of a hillside in the distance. Maybe if she climbed to the top she could get a better look around.

She wrapped her arms around her chest to try and get warm, realizing she was naked.
How she had missed that was anyone’s guess, but it was irrelevant. It wasn’t as if she could pull a pair of pants and a sweater out of thin air. She’d figure it out later, once she got her bearings.

Bare feet dancing across the rough, pebbled landscape, she kept her eyes focused on the hill in front of her, confident her salvation lay on the other side. The farther she walked, the more confused she became. This plane didn’t fit the description of any plane she’d heard of, and the education Brenna had given her had been fairly extensive. There was a tingle of doubt in the back of her mind, a part of her that was convinced she was finally completely dead and this was her afterlife. But she refused to believe that.

So she moved forward, step by painful step, against the wind’s resistance, through the thick layers of fog, until she was only a few yards from the hillside. Now that she was close, she realized the hill was made of a series of jagged stones, jutting out at various dangerous looking angles. It would take a miracle for her to reach the top, but she was known for beating the odds. She’d never know if she didn’t try.

Her hand was clutching the first notch in the rock when she heard it. A mix between a growl and a hiss echoed through the night. It was so loud, she unconsciously released the rock, pressing both palms over her ears to block it out. The ground shook with the force of whatever was coming and the wind stopped abruptly as if it too was running away.

Interview Desire Denied by Layne Macadam

Welcome, Layne.

Thank you so much for having me today.

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

Well, I live on the east coast of Australia in a beautiful part of the world. I work full-time and I love to travel. I write contemporary, suspense, sci-fi, and paranormal.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Desire Denied, Book 2 in the Desire Series was released 6 April 2015. It is set in the US but mostly in Columbia. The protagonist is Zach “Wolf” Buchanan, an ex Navy SEAL. His sister is kidnapped and her best friend, Beth Carmichael must deliver the ransom. Zach blames Beth for his sister’s predicament. When the drop goes sour Zach and Beth must travel through thick Columbian jungle and mountainous terrain to rescue her. On the way Zach learns some truths about himself and also discovers things are not always what they seem.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

No, my characters and their experiences are fictional but that’s not to say I won’t base them on people or events in my life in the future.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I work full-time and I love to travel. I’ve been lucky enough to see lots of the world and I’m eager to see more. I enjoy doing craft projects and cooking.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

The Twilight Series, I love vampires and having your books transfer onto the silver screen would be awesome.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

I have a history degree so I think I would like to try my hand at a historical novel some time in the future.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

The next book in the Desire Series is Desire Rekindled. It’s B. Michael “Hawk”  Brannigan’s story. I’m about a third of the way into it and it has some real surprises that the readers won’t see coming. I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll say no more.

Excerpt

Bright and early next morning Zach, wearing cargo shorts, runners, an open neck shirt, and a chirpier disposition, tapped on Beth’s door. Havoc’s words were balm, and he was going to start afresh, put the past behind him. Tomorrow was going to be hellish. Today he planned to be calm and relaxed. That would rub off onto Beth too; put her more at ease, God knows she must be scared witless.
“Morning Zach, come on in.” She stood aside and he breezed in closing the door behind him.
“Hi, how did you sleep?” he asked as she walked over to the bed.
“So so. What about you?” She glanced up from stuffing things into her backpack.
“So so.” He flashed her his pearly whites.
She returned his smile and then went back to her task. It gave him the opportunity to study her face. The smudgy dark circles under her eyes were a dead give away. She hadn’t slept a wink, but it didn’t mar her beauty. She’d put on weight since their last encounter, her bottom was rounder, her breasts bigger, more lush. He watched with lust and envy as they jiggled and swayed beneath her shirt, his fingers itching to fondle the delightful flesh as she continued packing.
“All done.”
Beth caught him unawares as she turned toward him and raised a brow, her lips pursing. The goofy grin slid from his face. Yeah, she’d caught him gawking, but what was he, dead?
He cleared his throat. “If you’re ready, we’ll head downstairs to join the others.”
“Ready as I’ll ever be.” She smirked, and with her pack slung onto her shoulder trounced out the door leaving him to shadow her to the lift.
The down button was jabbed with a pointed finger. The lift arrived, and they stepped into the small box that felt infinitely smaller with just the two of them than it did the night before with the addition of Hawk and Havoc.
When the doors opened on the ground floor it was Hawk, chatting with the concierge, who first came into view. He was hard to miss. Apart from his size and red hair, he was dressed in kickass boots, baggy shorts, and a Hawaiian print shirt that was so loud it screamed tourist. And funny enough, he blended in, just another American college kid down south taking in the sites.
Havoc, in faded khaki pants, a common garden-variety polo shirt, was also inconspicuous despite his size and the Akubra he held in his hand. He was at the front desk checking out when Beth, and he walked up to him.
“You eaten?” Zach asked.
“Yeah, in my room how about you guys?”
“Same here,” Zach replied. “How about you Beth?”
“Yep.”
“Morning all, what a beautiful day.”
Hawk joined the group, chirpy as a lark in spring. “Wasn’t that the best breakfast ever Beth? I swear I’m so full I might just have to skip lunch.”
“Yes Hawk, breakfast was really good, but let’s not get crazy.” She laughed.
Zach stiffened. His mouth descended into a thin line and his hands fisted. He wanted to hit something, more specifically—Hawk’s face.
“Are we set to go then?” Havoc asked slipping his wallet into his back pocket.
“I checked out earlier, and I’ve put the rest of my gear in storage for a week. Do you think that will be long enough?” Beth asked of no one in particular.
“You’ll be back in New York sipping cappuccinos in less than a week love.” Havoc was optimistic.
“Jeep should be waiting out front. I asked the concierge to organize it,” Hawk told them with a grin.
“What do you want a medal?” Zach snarled and received a thump in the chest from Havoc with the back of his knuckles for his trouble.
“Huh.”
“Right then, if we’re all ready let’s move it.” Havoc led the way to the front of the hotel.

About the Author:

Layne lives with her husband, two dogs, and a cat on the mid-eastern coast of New South Wales, Australia. In addition to being an author she has a degree in history and holds down a full-time job.

She has always been an avid reader and voraciously consumes all types of fiction, but she particularly loves a happy ending, so writing romance seemed a natural progression for her. But as she sat at the computer one day — staring at a blank screen — it all seemed rather daunting. Yet once she finally started tapping on the keys, the words kept flowing, and what was meant to be a short story turned into a full-blown novel, Desire Unleashed, the first book in the “Desire” series.

Layne writes contemporary romance, paranormal, and sci-fi. With her passion for travel and a love of history an historical romance is not outside the realms of possibility.

When she’s not writing, you might find her tackling a craft project, walking by the lake, or in the kitchen creating some culinary delights.

Interview and Giveaway: Never Cross A Warlock by Marilyn Vix

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I’m Marilyn Vix. I’m a paranormal romance novelist. I’ve been writing romance for almost 2 years now. I love characters that like to take on the world, but have some fault that messes it up for them. I love to travel. I’ve been to Munich, Paris, London, Sydney, and Las Vegas. I love using places I’ve visited as settings.

I also write erotica romance shorts (eroms) under the pen name, Lynda Belle. I’ve got some spicy shorts with rockstars and Scottish lords. Again, a lot of my past experiences such as participating in Renaissance Fairs and working at a radio station influence my stories. I love using my experiences to add to my ebooks.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

My newest ebook is called Never Cross A Warlock. It’s the last in the Beware of Warlocks series. Catherine Banks will finally face her husband in the final spell battle divorce for witches. She ends up having a confrontation with the best friend that slept with her husband and deciding if she is going to choose Jeff for the long-term haul. I took into account of what many of my readers were telling me they wanted to see in the last book. I am hoping that I put everything in that they asked for, and more.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

My main characters are based a lot on me. Most writers will do this. There are fictional aspects to make her a little different, but a lot of her experiences come from my own life. People in my life inspire characters too. Catherine’s best friend, Cassandra, is inspired by several of my best friends. Jeff is inspired by my husband. I lived in Australia for several weeks, and loved it there. All the men were hot. So, it was a no brainer to make my lead man Australian.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

Sometimes I see a theme in my stories, usually after the first draft is written. I’ll go back and add reading clues later to bring them out during the revision process. But often, I let the characters tell me what they want to say. I’ll get my message from them.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

My day job. You might not expect it. But I’m keeping it a secret. I’d rather leave you guessing.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

Yes. In my off time, I participate in Renaissance Fairs and Scottish Games in Northern California. I play the Gaelic Harp. My guilty pleasure is wine which I learned from my great uncle. Plus, I live in California. It’s a no brainer to enjoy the wine here. There are too many fabulous wineries to pass up. My biggest guilty pleasure is going to the spa. My favorite is in the town of Calistoga near Napa. The specialty is mud baths in the area. Best place on Earth for a mud bath.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

A classic book I wished I’d written was “To Kill A Mocking Bird”. I read that book thinking; I want to write that well. I’m so looking forward to the sequel coming out in June.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Right now, Catherine Banks is my favorite. I so wanted to be a witch growing up with secret powers. I loved watching “Bewitched” as a kid. I used to go around and wiggle my nose with my finger like Tabatha. But since I couldn’t be a witch, I made up who I wanted to be. Next best thing.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

This is the last book in the Beware of Warlocks series, but not the end of the world I’ve created. I’m working on a new series with Catherine’s friend, Cassandra. She’s going to be a mortal flung into this world of witches and the undead. I want to see what kind of trouble I can get her into.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

I’m working on a Time Travel/Historical Romance that I’m nearing completion on. It’s called “Everything For Love” and starts in 1899 Paris. I used to live in Paris. So, it was fun to finally write a story that takes place there. It moves later to 1914 London. The research has been a lot of fun. I’m hoping to get it through the process soon with my editor. Hopefully, by the end of the year it will be released.

What book are you reading now?

I have a huge list on Goodreads for this. That site really keeps my reading organized. I’ve been reading a lot of Doreen Virtue’s books since I’ve been going through a lot of health issues recently. Her books are helping me keep a positive attitude, and concentrate on healing. Plus, I do a lot of reading of other paranormal romance. I love Vivi Anna, Bella Andre, and Anne Rice. Anne Rice is my favorite author. I’ve been reading Prince Lestat, and I’m so excited she’s got her Vampire Chronicles again.

Thank you for having me. It was good to be here, and share some of my secrets. –Marilyn Vix

Excerpt 2 From Chapter 3 of Never Cross A Warlock

I slid out of my bar chair faster than I’d ever made an exit. I had to regroup. Nothing like a quiet bathroom stall to clarify your thoughts.
I made it through the bathroom door and stumbled into an empty stall. Sitting on the toilet, a stream of tears burst forth. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I let it happen. Nothing like a good purge to get some sense back into a girl. Was I really ready for a life with Jeff? I felt the soul binding telling me he was the one to stick it out through thick and thin. But then, I thought so with Rich, too. But he’d never done the soul-binding spell. Just the marriage spell, and then we went on a shopping spree, buying houses, cars, and anything else that he thought my money, and now his, could buy. I was so stupid. He was such a cock suck up.
I heard a knock on my stall door. “You okay in there?”
I snuffled, using some toilet paper to clean up the snot from my nose.
“Yeah. Men suck.” I wouldn’t say warlocks. This was a mixed club.
“I agree with you there, girl. Just let me know if you need something.”
I blew my nose a couple of times, wiping off any excess, then stood, straightened my dress, and flushed all the tissue down the toilet. There. My man tears were spent. Time to move on and try to make a decision. I opened the stall door and saw the attendant ready to hand me a towel.
I added a quick “Thank you” before dabbing at my streaked make-up. I was going to have to do some reapplying.
“Sometimes this is the best place to come and let it all out, dear,” added the attendant.
“I’m totally embarrassed,” I said as I tried to make something out of my raccoon eyes. I’d just gone old-fashioned tonight. No added spells instead of make-up. I liked going all natural, as I called it. I really didn’t need spell enhancing, and was proud of that. Not every witch could claim to have a spell-free appearance. I started going through my purse for items to reapply and make better the mess on my face. My brown hair kept flopping in front of my eyes. It was getting distracting.
“Don’t be. I get a lot of woman crying out their man problems in here.”
“Hear any good solutions?” I started to reapply some liner, giving up on the mascara. I figured just adding more base and rouge would make me presentable again.
“Yes. Most of the answers involve kicking the scoundrels out of their lives, or forgiving them. I’m guessing one of those options might fit yours.”
“It does in one case.” I laughed. Throwing Rich out of my life would seem fit, if I lived through his retaliation. “I think getting rid of him is the best option.” I smiled at the thought of it.
“Oh, girl, two men. That’s always a problem.” The attendant smiled, leaving me to my make-up repairs. Just then, a toilet flushed and the stall opened. In the mirror, I recognized the woman exiting. It was Cassandra.
I wasn’t sure how much she’d heard. She came up to the sink next to me, rinsing her hands. My lips pursed, and I tried to play it coy. I looked in the mirror to touch up my rouge, but I saw my cheeks were plenty red without it. Maybe she wouldn’t notice it was me.
“Cat?” Her voice actually sounded surprised.
Shit. “Cassandra?”
