Interview and Giveaway: Maggie Mercer Mysteries by Jill Behe

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

The first two books in the Maggie Mercer Mystery trilogy (Mossy Creek and Freezer Burn) were recently released (December 15, 2015) by Devil Dog Press. The third book, Dog Days, is scheduled to be released in June of 2016.

The books are set in a small town in Pennsylvania that sits very close to the border of West Virginia, and the Mason Dixon line. Maggie Mercer is the administrative specialist/dispatcher for the Mossy Creek Borough Police Department. The story is told from Maggie’s point of view. So reading it is like sitting across the table from a friend telling us all about her latest adventure.

Are you a mom? If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

I am Mom to three grown sons, and grandmother, too. The boys are all out of the house and scattered around the states, so there is no juggling to be done. Housework gets neglected sometimes, but there are no complaints about it.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

I have characters who share similarities with people I know, but none actually emulate any one person. I do choose certain names for family and friends, though.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

When I’m not writing (Shh, don’t tell my publisher), and not reading, I’m crocheting, or baking.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Magdalena Elizabeth Suzannah Maria-Louise (nee Donovan) Mercer has to be my most favorite (at least so far). She is funny, yet compassionate. She’s not afraid to let anyone within hearing, know her opinion. She’s feisty and sassy. Her life is put together, and she has a great relationship with her sons. We had a lot of fun during the writing of her tales (to include the one I’m still working on). I’ve gotten to know her like a best friend. If I could, I’d be her. Wyatt’s pretty hot!

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

Mossy Creek and Freezer Burn are the first two in a trilogy. Dog Days is the next book, due out in the middle of 2016. The book is set in the dog days of August (mid-August to mid-September). There are five more police officers to juggle. The running thread of a storyline in book two is carried over and concluded, along with the wedding of the two main characters.

Welcome to Mossy Creek. We’re small and easy-going with a lot of community pride and camaraderie. What we don’t have a lot of is crime.

A close-knit laid-back little borough, so close to the southern border of Pennsylvania we’re almost in West Virginia. Townsfolk like to say: “We’re south enough to lend credence to our slight drawl, but sufficiently north of the Mason-Dixon to be ‘damn Yankees’.”

None of us were prepared for murder … especially involving a teenager.

About the Author:

Jill is the eldest of four children born to Christian parents in East Central Pennsylvania. It took a while, but the rebel within finally broke free. After shocking family and friends by enlisting in the US Army, then marrying--not much of a shock--birthing three sons, and getting divorced--again not much of a shock--she's now settling in, back in the great State of PA ... until the next adventure.

Jill began writing nonsense stories for her siblings and friends while in grade school, probably from the time she learned cursive. Her writing has improved. (A good thing.) With time, maturity and persistence, she continues to hone her craft in a variety of genres ... and at the urgent butt-kicking of her friends.

During the thirty-odd years she was 'away from home,' she never lost her love of creating prose. It was only a few years ago, she met another writer, and accepted an invitation to join a writing group. Not only did she make many new friends, she also learned more about the craft, and how to market her work.
