My name is Dormaine G and I love to write paranormal thrillers especially involving young adult characters. I don’t like to just plow into drama but add a dysfunctional element to a character with a comical/cynical twist, even at the worst of times. While already in their trying mental states they then must learn to survive against a plot or take on an enemy. Let me show you want I’m talking about using today’s popular shows.
One of my favorites is The 100. The main roles on that show are pure and utter dysfunctional starting from the main charterers - Clarke to Octavia trickling down to Bellamy and Lincoln. Each character, male or female, is damaged and broken from their childhood but must learn to survive on their own on Earth with no help from adults. If it were not for their unruly, sarcastic, out of the norm way of doing things they probably would not have accomplished all that they have. But we love them no matter the mistakes that they make.
My absolute favorite is The Shannara Chronicles. The three main young characters are Amberle the princess, Will the roamer/healer and Eretria the human Rover. Although each lived separate lives, none had it easy, and yet managed to begrudgingly find each other in a time of hardship. One day they’re living their normal routine lives only for it to be stripped away from them at a moment’s notice. From then they had to learn to survive while on a quest the best way that they know how from what little they know against an enemy plot or give into doom. All the while staying to true cynicism until they eventually learn to trust one another.
The main characters in my book are Connor, Ronin, Willow and Tony. Each left crushed after an earth shattering revelation but are forced down a path together while trying to survive a common enemy. They irritably and sarcastically muddle through the best that they can not sure if what they’re doing is even right or if they will even succeed against their adversary.
If you didn’t pick up on it but the key to my books is dysfunction and it is how I chose my shows as well. Please tell me who is your favorite dysfunctional/cynical characters from TV or even a movie?

About the Author:
Dormaine was born in Long Island, New York where she lived most of her life. As an adult she liked to travel out of the country though her favorite places to explore were her fantasy worlds as an author. She may be a nurse by profession but her heart has always belonged to writing. As a young child she spent many Saturdays in the library nurturing her love for books. There she discovered her fascination for the science fiction genre, through books, movies and graphic novels.
Now she resides in Colorado with her husband and two feisty dogs. After many years of working in hospitals and travel nursing she took time off to pursue a career in writing. Her first novel "Connor" is in one of her favorite genres, young adult urban fantasy. Her second love is for horror of which she created the "Madame Lilly, Voodoo Priestess" series. This is just the start of her exploration as she stays locked up her office in Colorado spinning more tales.
