Guest Blog with Eric Griffith

I’m a huge fan of the multiverse. When introduced to this very scientific concept by (what else) comic books as a child—or maybe it was Star Trek, since we all know multiverses involve sinister facial hair—I instantly recognized its importance. I knew that every decision I or anyone else makes is different in an exact mirror universe and that causes everything to change.

Knowing that seems key to being a fiction writer. You have to realize that every decision  characters make leads to changes.

It’s also important to realize that, as the writer, you’re GOD. Or, I am, since I wrote my book. And there comes times where my characters try to make decisions for themselves and I have to either push them back into place, or make them decide something completely out of character. Turns out it’s at lot easier to move mountains that to make an unruly character on the pages behave.

My book BETA TEST was the written with just a loose outline, plotted only a few steps ahead of the actual writing. It’s like sending a not-very-good scout ahead into the Forest of Fire and Quicksand, while the huge party, complete with elephants and an entire troop of knights in full armor,  is right behind him. Sometimes the party catches up to fast to the plodding scout, and threatens to overtake him. That’s when things get very exciting, both as a knight in fiery quicksand, and as a writer with no idea what comes next.

You just have to go with what the characters tell you.

In BETATEST, (SPOILER) the ending takes the protagonist, a guy named Sam who never wanted to save the world, to another dimension. It’s not a world like ours; in fact, it’s actually the world of extra-dimensional beings that made ours. It’s not unthinkable to say they can or would or did make more universes. Maybe that’s what Sam will encounter in some  sequel years from now.

To get there, I’ll rely on him to tell me the road to take, because he’s the knight. I’m  just a scout, just hoping to keep everyone alive.

Book blurb:

Sam Terra is having a bad week. He lost Molly, the woman he secretly loves, when she vanished before his eyes at the exact same time that ten percent of the inhabitants of Earth disappeared.

Naturally upset, Sam follows clues about the global vanishing with questionable help from his friends including a misanthropic co-worker and a childhood pal. When Molly reappears in the body of a man during a night of monster-laden devastation, Sam finally learns the truth. Not just about her, but about the planet Earth and the entire cosmos surrounding it.

What we consider mundane reality, others consider a game...and not a very good one. The whole thing is about to be shut down.
