The Environmental Impact of eReaders

Thanks so much for having me over. What a wonderful blog!

I think it’s incredibly important to think Green. Without doubt, our planet is struggling and it’s our responsibility to start taking better care of her. I’ve heard a lot of grumblings over the last several years about print books soon becoming a thing of the past. Yes, the thought is a little depressing.

Who doesn’t like the weight of a book in their hand? The smell of the pages? But the truth of the matter is that on average about 32 million trees are destroyed a year to support the publishing industry in the USA alone.

Pretty amazing, eh?

Hence the beauty of eReaders. While some have fought the ever expanding increase of Digital books, nobody can dispute their positive effect on the environment. When Amazon first introduced their Kindle I bought it right away. Yes, pressing a button to turn the page took some getting used to but after a few days it became the norm.

So eBooks are on the rise. The wonderful thing about that? There’s been a surge not only in the variety of books available but a refreshing array of undiscovered and talented authors who never ‘made the cut’ with the bigger publishing houses. In fact, I can think of several who have gone on to become quite successful today without their work ever hitting print on paper.

If you’re a diehard fan of printed books, I understand. But it you’re willing to go Green with an Ereader, I can’t recommend them enough. And wow, have prices gone down since I purchased mine!

What are your thoughts on eReaders? Do you feel they’ve made a positive impact on the environment or will they simply prove to be another passing phase?

Best Regards,

The Victorian Lure
