Interview with Suzan Butler Author of O Christmas Three

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

I write under Suzan Butler. I have an unhealthy obsession with Dr. Pepper and ice hockey. I live in the Dallas area in Texas with my two boys, and I love writing naughty books while my minions prepare the world for my eventual takeover.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

O Christmas Three came out in November. It started as just a story to procrastinate with since I was supposed to be working on a completely different book that was on deadline. But then I decided I wanted a Christmas release so I rewrote it so that there was more of a wintery feel to it.

Are you a mom (or parent)?

I am a mom. I have two boys I affectionately nickname EmoBoy and Jabbermouth online. Trust me, that fits their personalities.

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

It can be trying at times. I’m a single mom so it’s been really very important to time manage. I also run a graphic design business so it’s been very interesting juggling the Mom Hat, the Writer Hat, and the Artist Hat. It’s by no means an easy way to exist, but I do what I have to do.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

I think that personal experiences shape us and our writing. I might use a certain aspect of a friend’s personality because it fits with what I need to happen in a book. I’ve never turned a person into a character in my book, though, if that makes sense. Instead, I like taking pieces of people’s personalities and integrating them. So one character might have a certain personality trait from four different people. It’s kind of like an internal Mr. Potato Head.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

Each of my books has a different theme. For O Christmas Three? Well, there’s probably a few. I’ll let readers find their own in my work.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I’m in the military. Joined about 5.5 years ago, so I’m almost done, but that seems to surprise people when they find that out.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

For my fulltime job, I’m a freelance graphic designer. It takes up a lot of my time. I’m thinking about taking up kickboxing with the new year.

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

Hmm… there are so many… I don’t think there is a particular book or series. I think I would have loved to grow up to Lauren Dane. The diversity of her work is something that I strive towards as well.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

A few actually. I would really like to write a Highlander romance. I love reading them, but I’m not sure that I can write historical at all, let alone such a specific subgenre of romance.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

O Christmas Three book is a standalone, but it is set in the same world as my upcoming Texas Highlanders Hockey Team series, the characters might have cameos in those books.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

As I said earlier, the first in my ice hockey romances will be out in March 2013. Other books, including potentially another series, are scheduled as well, but I can’t go into details yet.

What book are you reading now?

I’m finishing up revisions on Off Her Game right now, so I’m not reading. BUT… I did just buy Jim Butcher’s Cold Days, which I will be reading as my reward for finishing this book.

What is in your to read pile?

What isn’t? ;)

But the smoldering attraction between Leo and Brianna is hard to deny and even harder to dismiss when it’s all he can think about, especially when the three are trapped together in Leo’s cabin during a snowstorm. Seducing Leo will test their relationship, reveal old secrets, and maybe tear them apart. While there may be room for Leo in bed, there may not be room for a third in their marriage.
