Please share a little
about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.
My name is
Alex Gulczynski. My pen name is Alex Gulczynski because pen names are for
chumps. Well, not really, but I do think if you have enough passion to write
something, you should have enough passion to put your real name on it.
I write
mainly toward the fantasy end of fiction, but have plans to write an
autobiographical tale of my own experiences in High School as a stutterer. I
live in Seattle with my wife and son where I write and teach science to young
kids. I can also freeze water with my mind.
Tell us a little about
your latest or upcoming release.
Eustice is
a fantasy/paranormal story of epic proportions and enjoyment. The story is told
from the prespective of a teen girl who has recently passed on to the
afterlife. There she finds herself in a surreal world of lost souls, angels,
and demons. She is drafted into the Reaper Corps and forced to hunt down rogue
mortal before getting caught up in sinister plot as old as time.
It's epic I
tell you!
Are you a mom (or
parent)?
My wife and
I just had our first child, a boy, two months ago.
If yes do you find it
hard to juggle writing and parenting?
Yes, but
not as hard as I thought. Being two months our baby does need a lot of
attention but he also sleeps a lot. So, right now I can find time to write
between him and my day job. Though, I'm more tired now than I ever have been.
Which means sometimes that writing time turns into staring at the cursor and
dreaming about my bed time.
Is there a theme or
message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?
I wrote
Eustice mainly to be entertaining. I didn't have an explicit message to convey.
That said, I'm sure there are a few in there. I'm curious what the readers of
the book think. Readers tend to find hidden gems that authors don't know they
buried.
If this book is part of
a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?
Eustice is
the first of a planned three part series called The Reaper Corps. The next part
is nearly done. I'm aiming to have it finished and published by the end of the
month. We'll see if my son agrees with that time line or not.
It is
difficult to share anything about the next book without spoiling what happens
in the first. I will say that this book follows Eustice as she leaves Purgatory
in search of something. Likewise, it is also epic.
What book are you
reading now?
Right now I
am reading A Sea of Storms from George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire aloud
to my wife feeds at son at night. It is a great way to wind down and relax.
I've read the book before but she has not and we're looking to finish it before
the next part of the TV series comes out and before my son can understand what
the words I'm reading mean.
