Bourbon Street. Okay, so the street wasn’t named for the
beverage, but it certainly fits the New Orleans drinking culture, which gets
started sometime in the early afternoon. Or sooner.
My latest paranormal mystery, The Hoodoo Detective, is set in New Orleans. In the interests of
research, I sampled the local cocktails. It’s research too good not to share,
so here three some classic New Orleans cocktails and recipes.
The Ramos Fizz
Invented in 1888, this New Orleans drink is a refreshing
citrus blend of orange water, lime juice, and cream.
Ingredients:
- 2 ounces gin
- 1 ounce cream
- 1 egg white
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- 1/2 ounce lime juice
- 2 teaspoons sugar, to taste
- 2-3 drops orange flower water
- Ice
- Seltzer
Shake everything
but the seltzer for at least one minute. Strain into a chilled Collins glass
and add seltzer to taste (generally an ounce or two).
The Obituary
You need to
like licorice to like this absinthe cocktail. If you do, be prepared. The drink
lives up (down?) to its name.
Ingredients:
·
2 ounces gin
·
1/4 ounce dry vermouth
·
1/4 ounce absinthe
Shake it. Drink it.
The Sazerac
The Sazerac became New Orleans’s first “branded” cocktail in
1850.
Ingredients:
·
1 cube sugar
·
1½ ounces (35ml) Rye Whiskey or Buffalo Trace
Bourbon
·
¼ ounce Herbsaint or Absinthe
·
3 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
·
Lemon peel
·
Ice
The mixing here is a bit tricky. Chill an Old-fashioned
glass and set it aside. Put the sugar cube at the bottom of a second
Old-fashioned glass and pour the bitters over it, then crush the sugar cube.
Add the whiskey or bourbon to the mixture. Take the chilled glass and coat it
with the Herbsaint or Absinthe, tossing out any excess. Empty the sugar cube mixture into the first
glass and garnish with the lemon peel.
Have you got any favorite New Orleans memories? (They don’t
have to be cocktail related). Share ‘em in the comments below!
And then go buy my book. :-)
