Interview: Toxic Bad Boy by April Brookshire

Please share a little about yourself, your genres, any other pen names you use.

April Brookshire is the only name I’ve published under (so far). The romance books I’ve written straddle the line between young adult and new adult. I also co-write a zombie apocalypse series called Dead Chaos that has urban fantasy and dystopian elements.

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

My latest release is Toxic Bad Boy, the conclusion of the Beware of Bad Boy series. Upcoming is the second book in the Young Assassins series.

Are you a mom ?

I’m a single mom to an eight-year-old son who would rather play video games than read.

If yes do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting?

Definitely. I have him full-time, so anytime he has vacations or breaks from school, it’s hard. (Like his 2 week spring break right now)

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

The main character’s brother from the Dead Chaos series is loosely based on my brother who passed away in January. The interactions between my female characters and their brothers are also loosely based on me and my four brothers growing up. Other than that, I don’t base characters from real people.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

I don’t have an overall theme in my YA romance books except maybe that it’s okay to write teenagers and young adults actually acting their age in books. I started writing the Young Assassins and Beware of Bad Boy series because I was tired of reading teens in books with middle-aged personalities.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I don’t like chick flicks. I know it’s weird for a romance writer, but I can predict everything that happens in them so I find them boring. I prefer to be surprised when watching a movie or reading a book.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

CW shows, I can’t resist them. Also, I read a lot. Some people would say too much. Guilty pleasures? Vintage harlequins, the ones that were published before I was born or in the 80s. They’re so not politically correct!

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole. There has never been a more perfect series.

Is there a genre(s) that you’d like to write that you haven’t tackled yet?

Adult contemporary romance (in the works) and paranormal romance.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

Jackson from Young Love Murder (the main character’s brother). His book is up next and I want to do him justice. He’s my favorite because he’s this cool, calm, mysterious assassin who cares for his sister.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

This series is complete and I’m very excited to move on to other projects I’ve been plotting out and working on.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

I hope to get out Young Assassins 2 by the end of May. It’s been derailed by the Beware of Bad Boy and Dead Chaos books for the past few years, so it’s time has come.

What book are you reading now?

Last night, I just finished reading You Were Mine by Abbi Glines
What is in your to read pile?

I have to catch up on several paranormal romance series and I haven’t read the newest Kristen Ashley book, Soaring. The latest Suzanne Wright and Joanna Wylde books are must reads in the month of April.
