My love of the paranormal stretches back to my early
teen years; ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches… I loved them all, in both
books and movies. Since Ghosts of
Kingston Cottage is a paranormal romance and mystery, I thought I’d share
my favorite—in no particular order—paranormal television shows and books.
TOP TEN PARANORMAL ROMANCE/MYSTERY BOOKS/SHOWS
1.) The Ghost
Hunter Mysteries by Victoria Laurie. I absolutely love this series,
featuring MJ Holliday. The mystery really pulls you in, and I love the
character growth each character has over the series. No one ever moves
backwards in that regard. Okay, Gilley may get more hysterical over the course
of the series but he’s still rather enjoyable :) The series does get darker
after book three, which I quite liked. And there’s just enough romance peppered
in that it doesn’t overwhelm the story but is delicious all the same.
2.) The
Haunted Vintage series by Rose Pressey. This is a delightful, cozy mystery
series with a dash of romance. It features Cookie Chanel, a woman who owns a
vintage clothing store and sees ghosts. These are light, quick reads, and the
ghosts are a hoot!
3.) The
Phantom series by Kelly Moran. This series is paranormal romance. The
Phantom crew are a team of ghost hunters. Each book features a different
couple. But even though the romance is the focus, the hauntings are an
important part of the story and do not let down the reader in terms of being
dark and creepy. Book three, Ghost of You,
had me holding my breath and tense through a good portion of the story.
4.) Jane True series by Nicole Peeler. I adore this series—selkies,
vampires, hounds, magic, lots of steamy and sweet romance. Above all, though, I
love the genuine friendships between the main character and her friends. I
could relate to Jane in that regard. And the whole series was refreshing in
that it dealt with beings that haven’t been overdone in UF/Paranormal Romance.
5.) The Alpha’s Temporary Mate by Victoria Davies. This is part of the
Fated Match series, and it’s my absolute favorite. I loved the chemistry
between the heroine and hero, and that she was a witch and he a werewolf. Their
issues were very real, and I found myself crying a few times. I enjoyed their
banter, and the humor was delightful.
6.) The Carpathian series by Christine Feehan. I, admittedly, stopped
reading at Dark Possession, but this was the series that got me hooked on
paranormal romance.
7.) Ghost Whisperer (television series). Ghosts, romance, and
mystery—all my favorite things :) I especially love how Melinda and Jim are
already married at the beginning at the show, but the romance is still there. I
miss this show terribly, though I do own all the seasons on dvd.
8.) Charmed (television series). I miss this show so much. I loved the
sisterly bond, the magic, and the way they wrote both the witch and demon
powers, and the mythology. The love storylines for each of the sisters were
unique, and it didn’t overwhelm the mystery in each episode.
9.) Haven
(tv series). Hands down, favorite show on tv right now, and I’m so sad it’s
ending this season. Though, it’s probably on the more supernatural than
paranormal side :) But I love the way the characters and story evolved, and how
the writers connect the threads of the first two seasons into this last one. I
will, however, say that I will be most upset if Duke doesn’t get his happy
ending.
10.) The Otherworld series by Yasmine Galenorn. I love that the story
centers around three sisters, and that the POV changes with each book so you
consistently get a good view of each of their lives. The romance and main
mystery smoothly blend. I really like that the series has an end goal, and each
book builds towards that.

“And what
investigation are we doing? You didn’t say.”
“Kingston
Cottage.”
Arabella stared
at him, shocked. “Are you serious?”
He nodded. “The
owners contacted me last week, and informed me they need to sell the house as
soon as possible. They want to put it on the market this month, due to personal
reasons. In order to do that, they need to know what’s inside … and how to get
rid of it.”
“No one has ever
been allowed to investigate it…” she trailed off in awe.
Folger smiled.
“Until now.”
She couldn’t
help but return his smile. The feeling of a fresh, no-one-else-has-done-it kind
of hunt was too much of a thrill to pass up. Historic Kingston Cottage was
located on a small island, all by itself, and had been rumored to be haunted
since before Arabella was born. She had seen pictures and taken boat rides past
the island, but she’d never set foot on the private property.
“When do we have
to be at the docks?” she inquired as she stood, grabbing her coat off the back
of the chair.
“Seven o’clock
tomorrow morning. Don’t be late. Dustin is taking you over. But, Arabella—” She
looked at him, knowing that tone. “It’s just going to be you, the reporter,
Nick, and Lena. I need the rest of the crew on a different hunt.”
She paused at
the door. Nick was one of their tech guys, and Lena was a lead investigator,
like Arabella. Five more investigators rounded off the team. But the more she
thought about Folger’s decision to use a small crew, the more it made sense,
especially within the limited space of the cottage. “Nick and Lena,” she began,
“do they know about the … ‘reporter’?”
Folger rolled
his eyes, clearly hearing the quotation marks in her tone.
“Yes. I asked
them not to speak of it until I talked to you myself. I think that was best,
don’t you?”
Arabella chose
to ignore the rolling eyes. “And the reporter?”
“He’ll be there
at seven sharp as well. His name’s Lucas Brown, and he’s a serious reporter.”
She nodded
slowly, not really believing him. “I’ll check in when we get there.”
“Please do, and
be sure to pack extra clothes. You know how storms brew up suddenly here. I
don’t want you all stranded without necessities. The owners left you some food.
Expect to be on the island at least three days, maybe four. Oh, and there’s
also a generator in the basement if you lose power.”
“Good to know,
and it was nice of them to leave some food.”
“Yes. They’re
good people.”
She found it a
bit strange that the crew wasn’t going to meet the owners before the
investigation, and stranger still that she had never met them. Noble was a
small town along the central Maine coast—it was pretty rare not to put a name
to a face.
“Oh, and
Arabella,” Folger called as she left his office. “Try not to push him into the
bay.”
