I’m relatively new to gardening. When I need a break from writing, I go out and tend my gardens. I learned a couple years ago to put crushed egg shells in my veggie garden over the winter and it really helps the soil composition.
Since I live in Colorado with the threat of 3-4 inch diameter hail stones, not to mention up to 2-3 feet of ice balls make it a challenge for your garden. The city has to use snowplows to clear the streets. Then we have frost until mid-June. I purchased covers (last year I used burlap material) from Gardeners Supply that withstand the storms and allow eighty percent of the sunshine though. I’ve placed curved wire to hold the cover three feet high as the plants get bigger. It’s been a plant saver. I’m going to replace the wire with PVC pipe heated and curved to the proper angel next year. My tomatoes are thriving as are the carrots, kale, lettuce, snap peas and green beans. Yippee.
One thing I’ll mention. Last year my carrots didn’t do so well. I planted them in the ground with the rest of my seeds mid-April and covered them up to protect from frost. This year I used the farmer’s almanac schedule to plant them and they are doing much better. My mom swore by the farmer’s almanac for planting.
I also started a fairy garden on the rock wall in the backyard. I have a fairy bird bath, lighted house and several fairy figurines to tuck in the nooks and crannies of the wall. I’ll add to it each year. I enjoy the warm light glow of the little house in the evening. To make my unlighted birdbath stand out, I purchased a couple of inexpensive multi-colored solar lights. They are placed to also highlight the rock wall in the back yard, slowly changing from green to red to blue. I’d purchased one to draw attention to our small Aspen grove in the north-east corner of our backyard. The light performed very well over the last two years so I added the other two at the base of the wall. Cost was under $10.00 per light and makes an enchanted yard by the light of the moon.
Well, it’s time to return to my writing cave and my manuscript in progress. Garden on!

Excerpt:
Sunrise brought
an orange glow spreading over the top of Independence Pass, bathing the valley
in warm golden shards of sunlight. Caden stood on the ridge with wings spread,
brushing the breeze and absorbing the sun’s warmth. Feels better than
yesterday. Finally, I’m gaining some strength back. It was time to move on to
Maroon Bells and the lake to enjoy summer in the Rocky Mountains. Carefully, he
tucked his wings in and picked his way down the trail. Dislodged rocks and
sticks bounced down the path ahead of him as he stopped to admire the view and
noticed something in the brush.
She lay naked,
battered, and beaten several yards off the trail. Her long, straight black hair
fanned around her head, tangled with twigs and bits of grass. Caden moved silently toward her, stopped, and
picked up a Bureau of Indian Affairs ID a few feet from where she lay. He
stuffed it in his pocket while watching the surrounding area for signs of her
attackers. Kneeling down at her side, he saw scratches and bruises on her
high-sculpted cheekbones and her full lips had a shading of blue around them.
He placed his hand lightly on her chest, felt a weak heartbeat and sensed a
brave soul unwilling to give up. God, this is the last thing I need.
About the Author:
Tena Stetler is a best-selling author of award winning paranormal romance novels. She has an over-active imagination, which led to writing her first vampire romance as a tween to the chagrin of her mother and delight of her friends. After many years as a paralegal, then an IT Manager, she decided to live out her dream of pursuing a publishing career.
With the Rocky Mountains outside her window, she sits at her computer surrounded by a wide array of witches, shapeshifters, demons, faeries, and gryphons, with a Navy SEAL or two mixed in telling their tales. Her books tell stories of magical kick-ass women and mystical alpha males that dare to love them.
Well, okay there are a few companion animals to round out the tales. Travel, a bit of mystery, and adventure flourish in her books.
