Gardening with Larynn Ford

Hey y’all! I’m Larynn Ford, author of Living The Dream, book three in my Dream Trilogy. Besides writing about the magical world of the Fae, I love growing my own veggies! The hardest part of gardening for me is tilling and prepping the ground to get ready for planting. I’m not mechanically inclined so keeping a machine like a tractor or walk behind tiller in good running condition is problematic for me to say the least.

I decided last fall to create a raised bed, fill it with good top soil, and start small. Looking forward to gardens for years to come, I settled on concrete blocks as my border. Wood would eventually rot so I felt concrete was a more long-term choice. At $1.38 each from Home Depot, I figured thirty would make a nice sized starter bed. I brought the blocks and twenty bags of topsoil home and got started. It really didn’t take long to form a rectangle with the blocks and dump the dirt inside. A few swipes with a garden rake and I had smooth surface to begin.

Here are a few veggies I tried.

My first little purple asparagus spear made its way through the mulch. There were fourteen crowns in the bag I purchased from Sam’s Club and every single one has sprouted! I can’t harvest the spears until the third growing season to allow the plants to reach their full growth, but the end result will be well worth the wait!

The next picture is my green cabbage plants just as they started to form heads.

At the bottom of the next picture is my attempt at purple cabbage. I’m afraid I planted these just a bit late since they didn’t make it through the freezing part of our Southern winter. The green plants at the top of the picture are kale. These produced well and are on my list for a second planting next month. I had fresh greens often and was able to put about eight quarts in the freezer. All from only six plants! I was pleased to say the least.

Next, you’ll see the fruits of my labor. I am doing a low carb eating plan so fried pork chops (no breading) and kale are a good combination.

As each set of plants nears the end of their life cycle, I turn them under to help create a richer soil for the next planting. Weed control hasn’t been a big problem so I’m planning my next fall crop of collards, kale, and cabbage to be set out next month.

If you’ve been thinking about trying raised bed gardening, I say jump in and get started! You’ll find you enjoy the taste of your very own fresh grown veggies.

Thanks for allowing me to share my little garden with you. Happy gardening!

Excerpt:

Allvis grunted his disgust bringing an abrupt end to my vain attempts to gain my freedom when he pressed the blade in his other hand to my neck with a firm pressure. I sucked in a sharp quick breath and held it. One wrong move on my part was certain to send the sharp edge slicing deep into my throat. I’d be a goner for sure.
I gritted my teeth tighter. Hands clamped around his wrist, I dug my nails in deep, ripping at his skin to ease the blade away, and relieve the pressure. He put an abrupt end to my efforts by looping my hair around his fist again and jerking me at least another inch higher. The movement caused the blade to nick my skin. I dangled like a puppet from a string in his grip.
“Lynzi!” I read my name on Layne’s lips, horror and desperation carved into his face as he screamed for me, pounded the air, and begged Aunt Pet to work faster.

Allvis howled again. “Hey, boy! Where do you want me to leave her head when I separate it from her weak little human body?”
