Author Interview - A Cry in the Moon’s Light and Father Daniel’s Compendium of the Undead by Alan McGill

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

A Cry in the Moon’s Light was released on Halloween night 2021. After the success of the audiobook/podcast I decided to put it out as a novel. This is book one of a series about a beautiful woman who suffers the tragic loss of her love. Forced from her home, she marries into aristocracy leaving her old life behind, until one day she must travel through the Dark Forest. A hideous creature stalks her every move and a deadly wolf pack is hell bent on killing her.

With the help of a young carriage driver, she flees some gruesome murders in a forest village to the safety of a nearby castle. A castle that holds its own secrets. It’s a time of castles, muskets, werewolves and witches where nothing is what it seems, and danger lurks everywhere.

There is also an accompanying artbook/guidebook that gives more in-depth character analysis along with dispelling myths and legends. This book is titled Father Daniel’s Compendium of the Undead. This book is also found in the sequel which will be out next year.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Some characters start out that way, but they develop into their own. I wrote myself as a character in the sequel, but he ended up being less like me than I intended.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

Only Love Defeats Evil. It’s the subtitle of the first book and signals how true love, pure love, where one cares more for the other person than themselves, is the only things that defeats the dark.

Of all the characters you’ve ever written, who is your favorite and why?

This is a tough question. I love the Duchess of Harcourt. She tough, shy, demure, beautiful, and is so strong and resilient. I really enjoyed writing for the Witch King. He’s such a wicked villain with a mystery behind who he really is and why.

But my favorite, is Colonel Gustav Voelker, the Hessian commander. He is sinister and heroic at the same time. He’s a complicated character where you are not sure if he is friend or foe. A complicated backstory as to what drives him to do the kinds of things he does. He has a small but significant role in the first book, but a much more expanded role in the sequel. He was also my favorite character to voice in the audiodrama/podcast.

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

The next book takes place 15 years after the events in the Dark Forest. Our heroine has been peacefully residing in the city where her grandmother passed. Some gruesome murders take place pointing to a return of night creatures.

Meanwhile, Colonel Voelker encounters some trouble with hideous creatures in his city resulting in his having to visit the Abbey at Feldberg to get some answers.

This is all a prelude to a war with the Undead Army led by the Witch King. We see the return of some beloved characters as well as new ones. More undead creatures are exposed as the world has been thrust into chaos by these evil beasts. A twist on the French Revolution and world politics emerges with the fate of the world resting on the upcoming conflict.

As with the first book, there is plenty of romance where love is still the unlying theme.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

I plan to release a short story about the love affair between the two main characters and the jealousy of a third party. While still staying true to the horrors of the series. This will explain in greater detail some of the backstory not covered by the series. It should become available in the next year. I also plan to release the podcast version of this around the same time.

Then in October 2022 I am looking to release the sequel or book II. Followed by season two of the podcast.

What book are you reading now?

Haxfuri by one of my favorite authors, NJM Hemfrey

About the Author:

Alan McGill is an American author who lives in an old farmhouse with a clowder of cats. Alan was close to his grandparents, who grew up during the Great Depression. They were married young and remained together until his grandmother's passing. His grandfather served in the Navy during WWII and was a gifted storyteller who wove humorous tales about tough events.

Alan grew up listening to these stories of right and wrong and watching fictional heroes--such as the Lone Ranger, Adam West's Batman and Captain America--stand up to bullies and protect those who count not protect themselves. This inspired him to always do what was right in his own life and shaped his love of storytelling.

He is a multi genre author whose debut novel, A Cry in the Moon's Light, combines horror, romance, and mystery. As with all his books, A Cry in the Moon's Light centers on characters who strive to do the right thing regardless of the adversity they face. The book focuses on the theme of love--a pure and deep love that defeats all evil.
