Author Interview - In Her Own Words: A Collection of Short Stories and Flashku by Cendrine Marrouat

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

In Her Own Words is my first full collection of short stories and flashku (a form of “poetic” flash fiction I invented). Each story features a different main female character whose experiences teach her an important lesson.

Have you ever based your book or characters on actual events or people from your own life?

Like all authors, my environment has informed my writing.

My play, In the Silence of Words: A Three-Act Play , is loosely inspired by two major events in my life. While all the characters carry a little bit of my “DNA”, a couple of them are actually modeled after people I know.

What Will Happen Next? came to life as a result of my observations and conversations with people who have been adopted.

The more I re-read In Her Own Words, the more the book feels like a series of letters to my younger self.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

Whether it is poetry, photography or fiction, my message is always the same. No matter how hard life may be, there is always a lesson standing around the corner. Embrace challenges and disappointments. Only through them can real growth happen.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

That I am an introvert with a very perfectionist brain. For example, most people have no idea how hard it is for me to speak in front of a camera / audience or even record myself reading my own poetry. But I do it anyway. That’s how you build healthy self-confidence.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I am a photographer, visual artist, poet, blogger, and the co-founder of Auroras and Blossoms, a platform dedicated to inspiration and upliftment in the arts. I also interview artists, review books, and enjoy creating poetry forms.

What is next for you? Do you have any scheduled upcoming releases or works in progress?

I am always working on something. Right now, I am putting the finishing touches to a short story that I hope to release as a standalone book next year.

Thank you very much for having me!

Review:
A lovely collection of short stories and flashku, a literary form of flash fiction of her own creation, that visit and revisit the many forms love can take throughout our lives. Immersive, palpable, emotionally intelligent characters and themes make this collection a very enjoyable experience. One for my bookshelves! - Sarah St. Erth
