Poetry Corner with Serafina Silk

Thank you to Creatively Green for inviting me. As well as being the author of the Samaritan series (a first person thriller with erotica thrown in), I’m a local journalist.

I’ve always enjoyed various forms of writing since I was a young girl. I still have my diaries from aged 10-16. They’re dreadful but at least I wrote a page a day. I don’t really recognise the person who wrote them! But then, I am now a mother-of-two, a journalist and wife.

I have been writing poetry and song lyrics for as long as I can remember.

When I was growing up, although he belonged to two generations before me, I was a huge fan of Spike Milligan. His comedy and war memoirs (that take us from draft to life in post-war Italy as an entertainer) are extraordinary. But it was his love of animals (and fury at the way humans treated them) that most chimed with my own young views.

Sadly Spike suffered from terrible PTSD after the war and spent most of his adult live receiving treatment for depression. A friend once gave me his wonderful book of poetry, Dreams of a Small Scorpion, which dealt with his anxiety. It is both bleak and uplifing. I found it an enormous help when I was going through anxiety in my 20s.

So I wrote this for him and to say thank you for the book

The Scorpion’s Tale.

When you dreamt, I had to dream along
The Scorpion’s tail had done us both so wrong
With every single word you mapped my life into pieces
And me unaware that the world held germ-free diseases
Our minds fuse through the words you choose
There was light in my dark after so long
Gooning about but the truth it will out
And you never lived but a half of it
Crying with laughter, the mix I was after,
This all-sane, half-mad wit
Me I always found that to get back on the ground you need a friend
Someone who won’t falter if you try and alter the bitter end
In words I found the perfect healing sound and you gave a lend
Given half a chance I’d swap partners in the dance and I’d help you mend
Here in Capris I think of you as a young man

In love and at war, before the colours ran.

Excerpt:

With a hand on Evan’s shocked face, I reached in and pressed my lips against his. He was shaking, like he was trapped. When our lips touched, he became still. Once again, it was as if there were two worlds: the one in which we were Evan and Min, and the one in which Evan and I were sexless old acquaintances. There wasn’t time now to wonder how or why.  Unable to cut the Min side out, I just wanted to savour not being Chris the Reliable, Chris the Predictable, Chris the Wife.
I could feel it. The incredible heat between Min and Evan was something exciting I had never experienced in my own sex life. Sure, when Arron and I first got together, he took me to new places. Sex with him in the early days was mind-blowing, but this was an upgrade, no question. No wonder Evan had given up trying to match the experience in the years since she left him.
He broke from increasingly urgent kisses to whispers. “Why did you leave, Min? God, I love you. You will always be the love of my life.” After every line he returned to my mouth, unable to keep from the “sweet communion of a kiss,” as Judee Sill memorably described it.
It’s interesting that we kiss and eat with our mouth, isn’t it? It means that you can say things like, “we devoured each other.” It makes perfect sense - I understood that now. We were devouring each other. Our arms pulled each other tighter. We were both slim. Only my swelling breasts separated us. Our hands strayed across each other’s backs, giving our arms the support they needed to pull-in a fraction closer. The kisses, the sighs and the whispered phrases of loss from Evan, seemed to go on, deliriously, forever. Yet, my body needed more. Min may have been driving this, but Chris also had to know - I knew I could not carry on without feeling what Min and Evan had felt together.
It was me who lowered my hands first, to squeeze Evan’s arse. His soon followed suit and his hands pushed flat against my back and dove behind my jeans, under my panties. He tease-bit my lip, upping the ante. I groaned as, for the first time in 15 years, a man who wasn’t my husband, touched my aroused, naked flesh. And boy, was it aroused.
Constricted by the material, Evan could do no more than feel and knead my cheeks, but my pussy throbbed at the thought of what I hoped was to come. Unable to wait, I brought my hands to the front, unlatching the clasp of his trousers, pulling the zip down an inch or two. There was just enough room to slip my right hand into the top of his boxers.

"Authors who elect to write paranormal fiction take a leap of faith - especially when their audience is the Young Adult group. Though this is the first of her book this reviewer has read it is easy to see why she has gained such a wide audience. Her vampire stories retain enough of the expected magic and fright demanded by lovers of the genre, but at the same time she manages to infuse her tales with aspects of humanity not usually found in the routine vampire novels."~ Grady Harp HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

Genre: YA paranormal

Date of Publication: Aug 14th

Cover Artist: SK Designs

Tagline: The truth hurts more than secrets and lies

Book Description:

After traveling the country with her aunt, Genesis Berkley finally feels like she is home. Settling in Tillamook, Oregon, she begins a new life and everything seems to be going smoothly. That is, until she runs into a mysterious young man.

The feelings that he awakens are unsettling, and soon, her simple, peaceful world shatters. Lies and secrets are revealed, and danger lurks in every corner.

Now, Genesis must discover if she is strong enough to fulfill her destiny. Will she learn to accept the truth before it is too late.

Excerpt Three:

Liam slid his hand under the small of my back without breaking our connection. His arm wrapped firmly around my waist supporting me slightly before he adjusted me to fit underneath him. He pressed his hips into mine. All the tension that had built up between us melted away as we lost ourselves in one another. We explored each other in ways we had not yet dared. Everything until that moment had been lustful, a tease in the hindsight of temptation.
We were more than physical attraction, though our bodies burned and ached with desire to appease the longing for one another’s touch. Somehow, in some way, the universe had a hand in our destiny, pushing us together, encouraging our union. The fight to stay away was lost with a single touch. The urgency to protect him from himself was more damaging than giving in and fulfilling what was always meant to be. We were and always would be stronger as one. It was why I would always choose Liam.

Excerpt

“Are you okay?” Katia said, standing in the doorway of the bathroom.
Turning his head towards the sound of her voice, Luc was struck dumb yet again, but for an entirely new reason.  Katia was leaning with one shoulder against the doorframe, the steam from the bathroom hung in the air behind her like mist.  She was wearing the oversized white t-shirt from earlier, but now it hung loose covering the tops of her thighs, but leaving the rest of her thin, toned legs bare.  Her wet hair hung in one long braid over the front of one shoulder.  Luc’s mouth watered as he imagined tracing that phoenix tattoo with his tongue.  With her doe-like mismatched eyes, fine features, and small, thin body, she looked like an otherworldly princess that had wandered out of her fairy tale and found herself in this awful motel.  Luc’s breath caught in his throat.
“Yup, everything’s good,” he said in a strangled voice.

Giving him a dubious look, Katia headed towards the bed, pulled back the covers and sat down leaning back against the headboard.  Luc turned back to the mirror, watching her in it as she flipped her braid over her shoulder and leaned her head back with a sigh.  Locking eyes with his own reflection, Luc started to mentally panic.  There was a small problem — well, not a small problem, and it was getting bigger.

Reviews

As a voracious reader, I find it astounding that I can still come across something original. Yes, I’m familiar with the characters names and previously read interpretations of the good and evil they have done. Dark Angel gives us a new take on how good become evil and evil doesn’t have to be forever.  Dark Angel is the first book in this series and I’m definitely a fan  ~ Stacey is Sassy

It’s been a while since I’ve read a fallen angels novel, and I now remember why I loved them so much!  This is my first book from this author and I’ve added her to my favorite author’s list.  Love can change everything. Even the darkest soul can shine again when they find a reason…I can’t wait to read the rest of their stories. ~ The Secret World of Book Lovers Carla Maggiolo

Secret Series – Tagline

A series of secrets, invisible yet glaring, and most include a Supernatural spin, like an unwelcomed sensation sparking every nerve ending.

Excerpt:

Koko’s paddling slowed as we got close to the boat, which now floated in three foot of water. My feet squished into the muddy bottom when I stood and grabbed the boat to stop it from drifting farther. We were in the only section of the lake with a bottom like mucky quicksand. Koko let me scoop him over the side, but both of my feet sank deeper into the mire.

Ever so lightly, something brushed my right ankle. A tingly sensation zinged up my leg at the thought of the strange green creature with those big round black eyes. Goose bumps shuffled down my spine. I splashed at the water while struggling to lift a foot. Something like tiny fingers pressed against both sides of my ankle, lifting that foot out of the muck.

What the—? Little green arms flashed through my mind. Does it have fingers?

A scream ripped out of my mouth as I balanced on one foot, grasping the side of the boat. I wanted to move…needed to move, but all I could do was stare into the water and see nothing through all the stirred up muck.

Dad’s words rushed me like an echo from the past, ‘panic only increases fear,’ but if it were possible with one buried foot, I’d run like a crazy girl through the muck to shore, screaming my head off the whole way.

Maybe the fingers around my ankle were only in my imagination, but the flutters rippling topsy-turvy inside my stomach were real enough. I bent at my knees and with the help of my arms and my one free leg I managed to shift my weight toward the boat. In that same moment, those fingers gripped and pushed against my ankle.

My buried foot broke free and I rocketed into the boat, sprawling in a heap next to Koko.

Interview - Dark Sleepers by Kate Sermon

Tell us a little about your latest or upcoming release.

Dark Sleepers is the story of one girl’s journey into the astral realms to find her dead dad. Kezia drags Ben, her best friend with her. Neither of them could  be prepared for what they find there. It’s a place where thoughts are all powerful. Guarding your thoughts takes on a whole new meaning.

If you are a parent do you find it hard to juggle writing and parenting? Any tips for time management or sneaking in writing time?

I have three children. I always write my first drafts early in the morning before I even get out of bed. I keep my laptop next to my bed, so I lean over, boot to up and write 500 words. Everyday without fail. That way when I get up I can enjoy the day knowing that I’ve accomplished something creative for me.

Is there a theme or message in your work that you would like readers to connect to?

Yes, the main theme of the book is based on manifesting through positivity. The baddie of Dark Sleepers is the negative Thoughtforms which certain characters negatively manifest through feeding their pain, anguish and dark thoughts. Part of Kezia’s adventure happens around learning how to control these entities.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I’m a Green Party Councillor in my home town as well as a writer.

When you’re not writing what do you do? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

I love walking in the wild, or by the sea. I love camping out and love nothing more than a campfire and stargazing with good friends. I don’t believe in guilty pleasures… I think all pleasure should be guilt free!

Which romance book or series (or other genre, if you don’t write romance) do you wish you had written?

I wish I’d written the Harry Potter series, for lots of reasons!

If this book is part of a series…what is the next book? Any details you can share?

yes, this is the first one of a trilogy called Dark Flows the River. The next one gets even darker and Ben gets a rough ride. It will be out at Christmas 2016.

Dark Sleepers
Dark Flows the River Trilogy
Book 1
Kate Sermon

Genre: Young Adult Magical Realism Paranormal

Word count: 71,000

About the Book:

“You are astral travellers now. Able to project your spirit out of your body at will and enter the realms. You are not the only ones. Some people come here in their dreams without even knowing it. Some purposefully decide to travel here to find answers to questions they can’t find on earth... And some pass over... Die.”

Kezia's world implodes after her dad dies. She can't cope any more, and then she discovers the ability to leave her body. She drags her best friend, Ben, with her into other worlds to find her dad, but what she finds along the way, she could never be prepared for...

"Kate Sermon's writing is truly sublime. She creates characters to care for; whether it is dealing with friendship in our own world or grief in the astral planes, Kezia and Ben remain real people with hopes and flaws. Dark Sleepers is a startlingly imaginative debut."  ~ Dan Metcalf, Children's Author

Excerpt:

Kezia was struggling even more. The memories that threatened to overwhelm her had waned, dispersing like vapour from a boiling kettle. But they had been replaced by a fear that she guessed was not her own, even if it was hard to tell for sure.

She lay down on the dirty sand and closed her eyes. It was an instinctive action and at once she knew that it was a good one. She breathed, as her mum had taught her when she was stressed or worried. She could hear very clearly her mum’s soothing voice say “Darling, just breathe. That’s all you need to do.”

It helped. Her heart rate slowed and a sense of herself began to emerge from the jumble inside her. As she concentrated on her breathing, she began to hear a tiny whispering sound like mice behind skirting boards. It came from deep inside her head. And it definitely wasn’t her own thoughts. It must be the girl’s.

Then it occurred to her – maybe she could talk to this child. Maybe find out something that could help. Just like the day her dad died, she found that words weren’t needed. Her thoughts traced patterns of light through the blackness.

“Who are you?” She asked.

Almost immediately she got a reply. A quivering voice, barely audible, said: “I don’t know. I’m… I’m scared.” It sounded desperate.

“Please don’t worry. I’ve been to this place before, it’s not so bad. I can help you.” She hoped this was true. “What’s your name?”

“I don’t remember… wait, I think it may be Rose. Can you really help me?” The voice brightened. “But he was chasing me. I needed to get away. It all happened too fast.”

“I’m sorry Rose. I don’t understand.”

Confused for a moment… but then a light bulb pinged on. It drenched all the confusion in bright, white light. She suddenly realised she knew what was going on – what this place was and why the children were here.

Top Ten Websites to Help Authors

Here are a list of top websites that authors can use to help build their careers. There’s no specific theme behind them, and it includes advertising websites, review websites, services, and anything else that I’ve found beneficial since hitting that publish button on KDP.

10 – BookBub – The king of email advertising. Bookbub has been around for a long time and only takes the best of the best books with a lot of reviews, and even then only if it matches the current tastes of their readers. It can boost your book sales unlike no other program out there, and if you’ve submitted before and been denied don’t worry: everyone has. Just keep trying.

9 – Online Book Club – A website where you can submit for a free editorial review. They have a lot of promotional options as well, and if you’re willing to put in the time and effort to join the community it can really help you out.

8 – CLC – Literary Classics comes with reviews and a contest. It isn’t necessarily cheap to enter, but they put a lot of work into their annual book awards and there are some amazing people who work here. If your book is a good fit for YA or children, then this company can help immensely in building up your career and helping you expand. When they like a book, they will champion it.

7 – Reader’s Favorite – This website can help immensely for anyone interested in getting a free review or entering a contest for their works. The submission process is easy and the company has a lot of different systems in place to help indie authors to build their careers.

6 – IBPA – A very professional organization that has discounts and benefits for its members. A lot of their services are powerful and expensive, so this is something that can be hugely beneficial as an author’s career expands. The discounts alone can pay for the yearly fee.

5 – Wattpad – An online forum for authors and readers to look at works in progress and offer feedback and critiques. It’s a difficult community to work into and the site feels somewhat fractured, but it can be immensely useful.

4 – WriteOn – Similar to Wattpad, but the site is a little easier to navigate. This forum is filled with more authors and less readers, so occasionally it can feel like shouting into the abyss to get attention for your book. That being said, people can be very helpful.

3 – RRBC – An online community of authors and readers that are full of information and support for your career. When you join, you’ll find an engaged and professional group of people who are always willing to help. The more you put in, the more you’ll get. Has an annual fee, but it isn’t a lot.

2 – BookFunnel – A hosting service for eBooks you’re planning to give away, BookFunnel can help you distribute watermarked copies of your book to readers. Great for giveaways and being able to track how many copies you give a month, or for newsletter signups to track the number of people who take advantage of free offers. They have a really cheap entry level option for authors who aren’t making a lot of money, and they deliver the preferred format directly to your readers.

1 – KBoards – If you want to put your finger on the pulse of amazon’s publishing network, this is where it is. Anything that is happening in the world of self-publishing can be found here, and usually as soon as it comes into existence. The people are friendly and supportive and browsing will teach you more about writing and publishing than you ever would have expected.

There you have it: those are just a few of the websites I’ve discovered as an indie author that can help build a career. A lot of them I only found out about recently and wished I knew about sooner.

My best advice for authors is to just have fun with it. Experiment and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If you’re having fun with your books, then other people will too.

Excerpt:
“Reverend, you have a visitor.”
He couldn’t remember when he fell in love with the pain. When agony first turned to pleasure, and then to joy. Of course, it hadn’t always been like this. He remembered screaming all those years ago when first they put him in this cell; those memories were vague, though, like reflections in a dusty mirror.
“Open D4.”
A buzz as the door slid open, inconsequential. The aching need was what drove him in this moment, and nothing else mattered. It was a primal desire: a longing for the tingly rush of adrenaline each time the lash licked his flesh. The blood dripping down his parched skin fulfilled him like biting into a juicy strawberry on a warm summer’s day.
“Some woman. Says she needs to speak with you immediately. She says her name is Frieda.”
A pause, the lash hovering in the air like a poised snake. The Reverend remembered that name, found it dancing in the recesses of his mind. He tried to pull himself back from the ritual, back to reality, but it was an uphill slog through knee-deep mud to reclaim those memories.
It was always difficult to focus when he was in the midst of his cleansing. All he managed to cling to was the name. Frieda. It was the name of an angel, he knew. . . or perhaps a devil.
One and the same when all was said and done.
She belonged to a past life, only the whispers of which he could recall. The ritual reclaimed him, embraced him with its fiery need. His memories were nothing compared to the whip in his hand, its nine tails gracing his flesh.
The lash struck down on his left shoulder blade, scattering droplets of blood against the wall behind him. Those droplets would stain the granite for months, he knew, before finally fading away. He clenched his teeth in a feral grin as the whip landed with a sickening, wet slapping sound.
“Jesus,” a new voice whispered from the doorway. “Does he always do that?”
“Every morning.”
“You’ll cuff him?”
“Why? Are you scared?”
The Reverend raised the lash into the air, poised for another strike.
“Just…man, you said he was crazy…but this…”
The lash came down, lapping at his back and the tender muscles hidden there. He let out a groan of mixed agony and pleasure.
These men were meaningless, their voices only echoes amid the rest, an endless drone. He wanted them to leave him alone with his ritual. They weren’t worth his time.
“I think we can spare the handcuffs this time; the last guy who tried spent a month in the hospital.”
“Regulation says we have to.”
“Then you do it.”
The guards fell silent. The cat-o’-nine-tails, his friend, his love, became the only sound in the roughhewn cell, echoing off the granite walls. He took a rasping breath, blew it out, and cracked the lash again. More blood. More agony. More pleasure.
“I don’t think we need to cuff him,” the second guard decided.
“Good idea. Besides, the Reverend isn’t going to cause us any trouble. He only hurts himself. Right, Reverend?”
The air tasted of copper, sickly sweet. He wished he could see his back and the scars, but there were no mirrors in his cell. They removed the only one he had when he broke shards off to slice into his arms and legs. They were afraid he would kill himself.
How ironic was that?
“Right, Reverend?”
Mirrors were dangerous things, he remembered from that past life. They called the other side, the darker side. An imperfect reflection stared back, threatening to steal pieces of the soul away forever.
“Reverend? Can you hear me?”
The guard reached out to tap the Reverend on the shoulder. Just a tap, no danger at all, but his hand never even came close. Honed reflexes reacted before anyone could possibly understand what was happening.
Suddenly the Reverend was standing. He hovered above the guard who was down on his knees. The man let out a sharp cry, his left shoulder twisted up at an uncomfortable angle by the Reverend’s iron grip.
The lash hung in the air, ready to strike at its new prey.
The Reverend looked curiously at the man, seeing him for the first time. He recognized him as one of the first guardsmen he’d ever spoken with when placed in this cell. A nice European chap with a wife and two young children. A little overweight and balding, but well-intentioned.
Most of him didn’t want to hurt this man, but there was a part—a hungry, needful part—that did. That part wanted to hurt this man in ways neither of them could even imagine. One twist would snap his arm. Two would shatter the bone; the sound as it snapped would be . . .
A symphony rivaling Tchaikovsky.
The second guard—the younger one that smelled of fear—stumbled back, struggling to draw his gun.
“No! No, don’t!”
That from the first, on his knees as if praying. The Reverend wondered if he prayed at night with his family before heading to bed. Doubtless, he prayed that he would make it home safely from work and that one of the inmates wouldn’t rip his throat out or gouge out his eyes. Right now, he was waving his free hand at his partner to get his attention, to stop him.
The younger guard finally worked the gun free and pointed it at the Reverend. His hands were shaking as he said, “Let him go!”
“Don’t shoot, Ed!”
“Let him go!”
The older guard, pleading this time: “Don’t piss him off!”
